Abbey Lossing, an Austin-based illustrator, has a remarkable ability to distill the essence of modern life into bold, colorful artwork that is as insightful as it is whimsical. Her illustrations, known for their playful energy and intricate patterns, bring a unique vibrancy to scenes of everyday life, crowding them with humor, warmth, and a deep understanding of human nature.

A Vibrant Career

With an impressive client list that includes Google, Apple, Amazon, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and many others, Abbey Lossing has established herself as a leading illustrator in the editorial and commercial worlds. Currently based in Brooklyn, New York, she juggles her time between her role as a staff illustrator and animator at Vice News and her freelance projects for a wide array of high-profile clients.

Lossing’s work at Vice News showcases her ability to transform everyday scenarios into visually engaging narratives. Her illustrations are not just about capturing moments; they tell stories that resonate with a broad audience. From intricate cityscapes and bustling crowd scenes to intimate portraits and humorous gifs, Lossing’s art is a vivid portrayal of contemporary life.

The Power of Patterns

One of the defining features of Lossing’s artwork is her use of patterns. Her illustrations often feature a tapestry of figures and shapes that interact in ways that feel both spontaneous and meticulously arranged. This patterning is evident in works such as her “Face Pattern” for Buzzfeed, where she fills the frame with a myriad of expressive faces, each one unique yet part of a larger, cohesive whole.

Her recent illustration for The New York Times, titled “The Power of Why,” exemplifies her talent for using patterns to convey complex ideas. In this piece, she depicts a sea of despondent workers hunched over their desks, all in muted colors except for one vibrant figure asking a question. This standout character visually punctuates the article’s theme about the importance of curiosity and questioning in the workplace, demonstrating Lossing’s ability to use art as a medium for commentary.

Humor and Humanity

Abbey Lossing’s illustrations are not only visually striking but also rich in humor and humanity. Her ability to find comedy in everyday situations is one of her trademarks. Whether she’s illustrating the many sleeping positions people adopt for Buzzfeed or depicting quirky scenes of city life, Lossing’s work is infused with a lightheartedness that feels incredibly relatable.

Her gifs, in particular, capture this blend of humor and relatability. In one of her popular gifs, a woman dances next to an unimpressed cat, capturing a moment that is both funny and endearing. In another, a character spends a day avoiding responsibilities in favor of internet surfing and taking selfies, a scene that humorously reflects the digital age we live in.

Abbey Lossing's vibrant illustration depicting a bustling cityscape with playful energy and intricate patterns, capturing the essence of modern life.

Crafting a Unique Style

Abbey Lossing’s art is heavily influenced by her background in screen printing, which is evident in her use of halftone patterns and pastel color palettes. These elements give her work a distinct, retro charm that is reminiscent of children’s books and vintage comics, yet her modern themes and fresh take on subjects keep her style contemporary and relevant.

Lossing’s illustrations often feature exaggerated, expressive human faces and postures, capturing a range of emotions that bring her characters to life. Her ability to inject humor into these expressions without losing the underlying humanity of her subjects is what makes her work stand out.

Advice for Aspiring Illustrators

For artists looking to break into the industry, Lossing has straightforward advice: keep creating the kind of work you want to be hired for and share it widely. “Social media is a powerful tool for artists,” she says. “It’s a great way to promote yourself and connect with potential clients.” She also emphasizes the importance of persistence, noting that building a client base and reputation takes time and consistent effort.

Looking Ahead

While Abbey Lossing is busy with freelance projects and her work at Vice News, she hasn’t lost sight of her passion for screen printing. When she finds the time, she hopes to return to the print studio to create a line of illustrated apparel and accessories, further expanding her artistic repertoire.

In the meantime, her fans can continue to enjoy her delightful illustrations and gifs that capture the quirks of everyday life with a playful, insightful eye. Abbey Lossing’s work reminds us that there’s beauty and humor in even the most mundane moments, and her vibrant illustrations invite us all to take a closer look at the world around us.

Louvre Sees Significant Drop in Attendance During Paris Olympics

While the Paris Olympics drew crowds to venues like the Château de Versailles and Eiffel Tower Stadium, the Louvre experienced a significant drop in visitors. During the Games, from July 27 to August 11, attendance at the world’s most visited museum fell by 22% compared to the same period in 2023. The Louvre recorded a weekly attendance of 331,759 people, averaging 23,644 visitors per day.

Pre-Olympic Decline: Visitor Numbers Plummet in July

The decline began even before the Olympics. Between July 15 and 26, only 166,604 people visited the Louvre, marking a 45% decrease from the same period last year. The museum’s closure for the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony on July 25 and 26 also contributed to the lower numbers.

Security Measures and Closures Contribute to Decreased Foot Traffic

The Louvre’s spokesperson attributed the decrease to the heightened security measures implemented during the nine days leading up to the Games. These measures included restricted access to the Seine quays, the closure of most bridges, and the shutdown of certain metro and RER stations, making it more difficult for visitors to reach the museum.

Louvre’s 2024 Attendance Figures Reflect Broader Challenges

As of August 2024, the Louvre’s overall visitor numbers stand at just over 5 million, reflecting a 4% decline from the previous year. Earlier this year, the museum increased its basic ticket price from $19 to $24.50 to subsidize free admission programs for certain visitors. This was the first price hike since 2017 and was also necessary to offset a nearly 90% increase in energy bills.

This price adjustment is part of a broader strategy by the Louvre’s director, Laurence des Cars, to manage attendance. In 2023, the museum welcomed 8.9 million visitors, securing its status as the world’s most visited museum.

Impact of the Paris Olympics on Louvre Attendance

The decline in visitor numbers at the Louvre highlights the impact of the Paris Olympics on local attractions. While the city’s sports venues saw a surge in attendance, the museum, which typically draws large crowds, faced a significant drop. The combination of security measures and temporary closures played a major role in deterring potential visitors.

As the Louvre looks to recover from this dip in attendance, its focus remains on maintaining its status as a global cultural icon while navigating the challenges posed by external events and operational costs.

Powder Mountain, renowned for its expansive ski terrain, is transforming into a groundbreaking destination that fuses outdoor adventure with contemporary art. Additionally, Reed Hastings, co-founder and former CEO of Netflix, has announced plans to convert the mountain into a skiable art museum. As a result, this initiative will blend the beauty of the natural landscape with the creativity of some of the world’s most celebrated artists.

Skiable Art a Fusion of Art and Nature

The project, spearheaded by Powder Mountain’s new arts program, will feature works by renowned artists, including James Turrell, Jenny Holzer, Paul McCarthy, Arthur Jafa, Nikita Gale, and Gala Porras-Kim. These installations will be integrated into the mountain’s landscape, creating an immersive experience for visitors.

Powder Mountain will house James Turrell’s walk-in light installation, Ganzfeld Apani (2011), in a specially designed trailside pavilion. Jenny Holzer will engrave her iconic text-based art onto the rock formations, while Paul McCarthy will create a piece rooted in the mythology of the American West. EJ Hill, known for his functional roller coaster at MASS MOCA in 2022, will design two new ski lifts, adding a unique artistic element to the resort’s infrastructure.

Grand Opening Set for 2026

The first phase of the art installations, including EJ Hill’s ski lift designs, will be available for viewing starting in the 2024–2025 ski season. The art museum will hold its full-scale grand opening in 2026, promising visitors a one-of-a-kind experience where they can engage with art while skiing, hiking, or mountain biking.

Curatorial Vision

Director Matthew Thompson, Chief Creative Officer Alex Zhang, and independent curator Diana Nawi, who recently took on the role of curator of contemporary art at LACMA, originally conceived the art program at Powder Mountain. Moreover, their curatorial vision actively integrates art into the mountain’s seasonal rhythms, drawing inspiration from the historical land art projects of the American West.

“We want to empower a diverse and intergenerational range of artists to create ambitious experiences in the landscape that broaden the story of land art and expand its possibilities,” said Thompson.

A Visionary Project

Reed Hastings, who purchased Powder Mountain after its establishment in 1972 and its development into a world-class ski resort, envisions this project as a holistic integration of art, nature, and community. In addition, he stated, “At Powder, we want every experience—from the ski resort to the residential community to the outdoor art museum—to be intentional. Consequently, the integration of art into the mountain is a manifestation of that consideration,” said Hastings.

Expert Collaboration

The project has enlisted the expertise of renowned landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand, known for their work on the Storm King Art Center, and the acclaimed architectural firm Johnston Marklee, which is designing the visitor center.

With its unique combination of art, nature, and adventure, Powder Mountain is poised to redefine the concept of a cultural destination, offering visitors an unparalleled experience that celebrates creativity and the natural environment.

Nestled somewhere between the eclectic chimney pots and the gritty high-rise flats of London’s Eastend, there once existed a small, dusty attic. Lit only by the glow of an old desk lamp, this attic was the birthplace of magic. Here, amongst a collection of notepads and chewed marker pens, Colin ‘Choodie’ Hood breathed life into what would become the iconic brand, Growl & Grandeur.

The Genesis of a Legend

Colin Hood, affectionately known as Choodie, has origins shrouded in urban myth. Some say his journey to world domination began in Dagenham, a village famed for being Europe’s largest council estate. Growing up in this quintessentially cockney locale, Hood’s youth was a whirlwind of inky fingers and graffiti-embellished estates. He honed his artistic skills amidst the hustle and bustle, dodging Burberry-adorned Staffordshire bull terriers and perfecting tricks on his battered Raleigh Burner. When not grazing his knees or breaking his teeth, Hood would wield his pencil with the precision of a demon barber’s cut-throat, drawing on everything from scraps of paper to other people’s property.

A Detour into Mainstream Society

In a bid to find acceptance in mainstream society and atone for past misdeeds, Hood ventured into the world of advertising, adopting the title of Art Director—a flouncy term for Graphic Designer. However, the corporate world was a far cry from the raw creativity that filled his sketchbooks. To counter this, Hood started Growl & Grandeur as a small, independent project. It was a creative escape from his day job, allowing him to return to the graffiti, monsters, cars, and girls in small pants that fueled his passion.

The Essence of Growl & Grandeur

So, what does Growl & Grandeur actually mean? Growl represents the low, gruff, menacing sound made by an animal, while Grandeur signifies magnificence, nobility, and greatness of character. These contrasting words embody the essence of the brand—a blend of pride, a rebellious bark at authority, and an unabashed love for all things hound. After all, dogs are, as Hood puts it, “bloody awesome!”

The Rise of an Underdog

From its humble beginnings with four screen-printed t-shirts and a Facebook page, Growl & Grandeur has grown into a respected lifestyle brand within the graffiti, skating, BMX, and VW communities. It stands as a testament to the rise of the underdog, inspiring others to believe that with hard work and stubbornness, anything is possible.

However, success brought new challenges. The cramped attic space became too small to contain the burgeoning brand. Boxes of stock replaced the last office chair, leaving only a 1×1 meter square of standing space. It was time to expand.

A New Chapter in Newquay

In search of a lifestyle that echoed the brand’s inspiration, Hood and Growl & Grandeur packed up a lorry and headed to Newquay, the UK’s surfing capital. Surrounded by surf and skate culture, inspiring coastlines, and countryside, the move to Newquay allowed the brand to thrive. The new, luxurious studio (complete with heating) provided ample space for creativity, designated storage, and proper chairs for pen-chewing sessions.

Crafting Quality for the Stylish

Today, Growl & Grandeur is dedicated to painstakingly designing the finest quality apparel for the stylish people of our planet. Hood extends heartfelt thanks to those who support the brand, acknowledging that their warmth and awesomeness keep the creative fires burning—and the hounds in premium doggy kibble.

Colin ‘Choodie’ Hood’s journey from the inky estates of Dagenham to the luxurious studios of Newquay is a story of creativity, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of the underdog. As Growl & Grandeur continues to grow, it remains a beacon of inspiration for all who dare to dream and create.
