Mamlakati: An Evening of Art, Fashion, and Innovation

The event opened with a mesmerizing laser show, setting the stage for an immersive journey into the Mamlakati collection. The designs were showcased in a curated art gallery, where each piece reflected the cultural richness of three iconic Saudi cities:

  • Jeddah Capsule – Inspired by the city’s coastal vibrancy, featuring fluid silhouettes and dynamic movement.
  • Diriyah Capsule – Embodying tradition through structured designs and timeless elegance.
  • AlUla Capsule – Capturing nature’s beauty with earthy tones and artistic textures.

The collection, designed for both women and girls, seamlessly blended heritage with contemporary style.

Live Art, Digital Engagement, and Celebrity Presence

Renowned artist Taim Mashat brought the collection’s inspiration to life through a live painting session, expressing the passion and love for Saudi Arabia that influenced the designs. A dedicated interview lounge hosted engaging conversations with fashion and art experts.

The event drew Saudi celebrities, influencers, and fashion personalities, many of whom wore pieces from the new collection. Guests also explored a digital experience, interacting with a magnetic board, discovering the collection’s inspirations, and capturing special moments at a themed photo booth.

In an impressive display at Art Basel Paris, the AlUla Artist Residency Program made its French debut with “Orbis Tertius,” an exhibition of works from 20 international artists inspired by Saudi Arabia’s historic AlUla. Launched in 2021 by the Royal Commission for AlUla in collaboration with the French Agency for AlUla Development, the residency fosters creative engagement within AlUla’s unique cultural setting. Curated by Arnaud Morand, the exhibit aims to blend ancient traditions with modern artistic narratives, showcasing AlUla as a new artistic nexus.

The exhibition is part of a broader initiative by Arts AlUla to promote the ancient oasis city as a rising art and creativity hub. Known historically for trade and cultural significance, AlUla is home to Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site, and boasts a storied connection to the Incense Road.

“Orbis Tertius” brings this heritage into focus, presenting diverse mediums that reflect the region’s pre-Islamic heritage and its current creative renaissance.

Artists created their works within the residency’s inspiring settings, including Mabiti AlUla’s palm groves and AlJadidah’s new residence facilities. Morand highlighted the theme “Orbis Tertius, A Journey Between Fictions and Myths” as a response to the area’s evocative mix of legend and reality, aiming to provoke a “dynamic dialogue” among artists, local experts, and residents.

Notable exhibits include Monira Al-Qadiri’s striking aluminum sculpture “The Guardian,” based on the resilient Calotropis Procera plant native to the region. Meanwhile, multidisciplinary artist Anhar Salem’s “A Day in AlUla” showcases local lives, balancing personal narratives with broader cultural reflections. The Gazzaz brothers, co-founders of Bricklab, introduced sustainable construction methods in rammed earth, blending regional materials with AlUla’s layered history. Works by artists like Ayman Zedani and Reem Al-Nasser continue this thoughtful engagement with the area’s natural and anthropological heritage.

The exhibit reinforces AlUla’s role as a bridge for cultural exchange, supporting the vision to create a sustainable, globally recognized creative center. “We are showcasing the extraordinary artistic vision flourishing in AlUla,” said Nora Aldabal, RCU’s executive director, “a place where ancient history meets contemporary art.”

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) has launched a new exhibition titled “The Camel Through the Ages” at its Dhahran location, in partnership with the Riyadh-based Layan Cultural Foundation. This exhibit, which will be open until November 1, aligns with the Ministry of Culture’s designation of this year as the Year of the Camel.

In a statement, Ithra highlighted the camel’s enduring significance in Arabian Peninsula societies, including Saudi Arabia, where it served as a vital means of transportation across diverse terrains, akin to the role of ships navigating the seas.

At the exhibition’s opening, Prince Faissal bin Abdullah bin Mohammed, founder of the Layan Cultural Foundation, delivered a poignant keynote speech emphasizing the camel’s role in the Kingdom’s cultural heritage as a symbol of strength and endurance.

Ghada Al-Tobaishi, the executive director of the LCF, remarked, “We are very pleased to cooperate with Ithra (on this) exhibition. This academic and cultural project aims to enrich the knowledge of many important facts of cultural heritage of past eras.”

The exhibition draws inspiration from a two-volume Arabic-language book on camels published by the LCF last year in collaboration with the King Abdulaziz Public Library.

Some pieces in the exhibition were specially commissioned, while others were derived from the book. The exhibition is curated by Kumail Muhammed Almusaly, with contributions from Maryam Al-Dossary.

“We, at Ithra, reached out to Layan Cultural Foundation to collaborate on an exhibit specifically for the Year of the Camel,” Almusaly told Arab News. “And it fits very well with the intent of this gallery, which focuses on the history of Saudi Arabia.”

Almusaly elaborated, “We came up with five themes in order to create a journey in which the visitor could flow freely between the artworks — it is not a linear journey.”

The exhibition explores five themes: the camel as an emblem of Arabian identity; the camel as a spiritual or meditative symbol, particularly through Qur’anic verses; the camel’s role in camel racing and family life; its place in oral or folk history; and the camel as a companion during rest and travel.

Upon entering the exhibit, visitors are greeted by a series of paintings, including a notable 2013 piece by Saudi artist Abdulrahman Al-Soliman titled “The Camel is not a Ship.”

“This is a statement by a pioneering artist,” Almusaly noted. “(It’s) a piece that ‘corrects’ our perception toward camels. He is using text over the painting, which states that the camel is ‘not the ship of the desert.’ He wants to convert that perception back to the reality that the camel is a creature — it is not an object.”

The exhibition also features digital mosaics from the LCF, along with artworks by both international and local artists. “There is a part where we switch to how Western artists have looked at Eastern culture — how they are examining the camel and Arabic culture from their perspective,” Almusaly explained.

Following the paintings, the exhibit showcases sculptures, photographs, historical coins, and traditional garments, with many pieces incorporating Arabic calligraphy.

According to Almusaly, the LCF has played a crucial role in “maintaining culture, maintaining history and preserving culture through these materials,” by bringing in experts to examine each object and enhance our understanding of the camel.

The exhibition offers a chance to view the camel through various artistic lenses, reflecting Saudi identity and underscoring the camel’s vital role in the Kingdom’s cultural and economic evolution.

Expanding Access and Enhancing Education: New Additions to the 2024 Programme

Attendees of the concert expressed their appreciation for the event and its impact on their connection to Arab culture. Emad Al-Abadi, one of the guests, shared his thoughts, saying, “This was the first time I felt so connected to Arab culture in London through the music we all know and which unites the Arab world. The truth is that as Arabs in Britain, we lose this connection.” His sentiments echoed the sentiments of many others who attended the concert.

Nashwan Al-Mosuli, another guest, praised the outstanding performances, stating, “The music today was excellent. We heard songs from all around the region, from Sudan, Morocco, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq.” The choir’s ability to bring together the diverse musical traditions of the Arab world in one concert left a lasting impression on the audience.

The annual choir concert organized by the Academy of Art and Arabic Heritage has undoubtedly succeeded in its mission to celebrate Arab cultural heritage in Britain. By bringing together talented artists, captivating performances, and a rich repertoire, the concert provided a platform for the audience to experience the vibrant tapestry of Arab music and deepen their connection with the cultural roots of the region.

The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) recently organized an art exhibition called the National Identity Programme for Visual Arts at Manarat Al Saadiyat. Over 500 artworks by Emirati students were featured, with a focus on local inspiration such as Emirati fashion, jewellery, sand, Al Sadu, Talli, palm fronds, seashells, coins, and pearls. The programme aims to equip UAE national students in the emirate’s private schools to express their reflections on the country’s national identity, heritage, culture, and values.

The programme covers four main streams: Arts and Culture, Sports and Excursions, AlMajalis, and Curriculum Integration towards Identity. Its objective is to create a diverse pool of human capital that can contribute to realizing the goals of the Abu Dhabi Culture and Creative Industries Strategy. The programme aims to empower Emirati students to become lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and active global citizens who are deeply connected to their cultural heritage.

The exhibition recognized gifted students and prepared them to represent the UAE in local and international events by enhancing their art capabilities and skills. It provided a platform for exchanging knowledge, experiences, and artistic skills between visiting professors, trainers, artists, and students.

The programme’s Art and Culture stream equipped students with the artistic tools to express their national pride, build a unique leadership personality, and develop their identity. Art is an expression of life, and the programme seeks to foster the students’ understanding of intrinsic and deeply rooted UAE values through art.

The programme reinforces Emirati heritage and artistic elements in student artwork, deepening their understanding and appreciation of history, culture, traditions, and values. This is achieved based on three core themes, which are fundamental to the UAE’s rich cultural heritage, including ‘History and Heritage’, ‘Local Environment and Nature’, as well as ‘Local Fashion’. It seeks to instil national identity through presenting students with an opportunity to express and celebrate their cultural roots and national pride.

The programme’s first edition involved 32 art teachers who participated in ‘Teach the Teacher,’ a detailed training course that fused Emirati cultural elements and values into classes. To increase impact, ADEK shared various teaching materials, art workshop ideas, and teaching techniques with trainees to ensure the successful implementation of the program in classrooms.

The exhibition featured an assortment of impressive paintings, including one that depicted the historic mission of Emirati astronaut Sultan AlNeyadi to space, a stunning collection of collage works, and photographs expressing the vibrant culture of the UAE. The exhibition showcased student artworks that repurposed traditional elements such as textiles and jewellery to create truly inspiring works that depict the Sadu and the Louvre Museum’s dome using colourful wooden sticks.

The programme focused on core themes that are integral to the UAE’s rich cultural heritage, including our people’s history as coastal, in-land, and mountainous communities, exploring the significance of the desert, agriculture, and sea in the daily life of Emiratis. The Emirati students created individual and group projects focused on three themes: History and Heritage, Nature, and Fashion.
