Inloco Gallery presents its annual conference, Inloco Talks 2024, focusing on urban semiotics in the Gulf region. The one-day event will serve as a dynamic forum for experts to critically examine the intricate interplay of Arabic visual codes, language, typography, literature, and socio-historical context in shaping the modern urban sign system. Through four interactive sessions, the conference will bring together scholars, artists, curators, and urbanism experts from across the region. Featured participants include Salwa Mikdadi, Professor of Art History at NYU Abu Dhabi; Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFares, Director of the Khatt Foundation; and Karim Jabbari, calligraphy and light artist, among many others.

In addition, Inloco MetaTalks will be hosted in the project’s metaverse, discussing how digital creators from Arab countries utilize signs and symbols to construct virtual cultural landscapes, with an emphasis on distinctive regional aesthetic trends.

“With Inloco Talks 2024, we launch the gallery’s new thematic season, set the foundation for our curatorial direction, and culminate in an art intervention and exhibition at Inloco Gallery. Leading international auction house Sotheby’s will take part in the Riyadh International Book Fair from September 29 to October 8 in collaboration with the Literature, Publishing & Translation Commission of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture (RIBF).

A particularly chosen collection of books, manuscripts, photos, and artifacts that will be exhibited for the first time in the Kingdom will be one of the displays.

Leading specialists from Sotheby’s international offices will be present and participate in the series of panel discussions and lectures.

A World Globe made by globemakers George and John Cary in 1840 will be one of the attractions. The cities of Mecca and Medina are shown on the 36-inch-diameter Victorian artwork.

A rare album of photos from Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh’s 1979 royal visit to Saudi Arabia, which includes the Queen disembarking at Riyadh Airport, their official welcome by King Khalid, and their presence at various events, would be another exhibit.

The book fair is one of the most popular and varied cultural events to take place in the region, bringing together the most illustrious Arab and international publishing houses, institutions, and brands. As such, it is regarded as a significant cultural event in the Arab cultural scene.

According to Edward Gibbs, Chairman, Sotheby’s Middle East & India, “We are happy to exhibit some excellent examples from our private sales portfolio as part of the Riyadh International Book Fair — evidence of our long-standing commitment to Saudi Arabia.”

Saudi Arabia is a nation with a rich cultural legacy, and preserving these many customs while expanding the cultural industry is a key part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. Sotheby’s MENA’s managing director is Daniel Asmar.
