Sculpted from the sands of the Mleiha Archaeological Reserve, Karim Tamerji and Elias El Hage’s Desert Relics Installation reimagines ancient artifacts through towering, totemic forms. This permanent artwork, unveiled during the Tanweer Festival in November 2024, is set against the UAE’s rolling dunes and rugged mountains, reflecting the region’s rich history and natural beauty.

Reviving Rammed Earth Architecture

The Desert Relics Installation revives the ancient technique of rammed earth construction, where sand, clay, and water are hand-compressed into durable, sedimentary forms. Drawing on the archaeological heritage of Mleiha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the installation’s twelve modular sculptures mimic the shapes of ancient vessel vases, stones, and even a grand necklace. These forms, inspired by the crafts of early civilizations, showcase pigments and textures that seamlessly blend with the desert landscape.

Desert Relics: A Tribute to the Past

Karim + Elias have consistently explored vernacular architectural techniques on a monumental scale, and this latest creation is no exception. The installation reflects the duo’s dedication to connecting art to its natural surroundings while promoting sustainable and locally-rooted craftsmanship. Their previous works, such as From This Earth in Saudi Arabia and IOTA at Dubai Design Week, echo similar ecological and cultural themes.

The Desert Relics Installation offers visitors a unique opportunity to engage with the UAE’s past, presenting a modern interpretation of its enduring cultural and environmental legacy.

Abu Dhabi has welcomed Iris Projects, a new arts institution spotlighting artists from the UAE and Gulf region. Its mission intertwines fostering emerging talent with uncovering the region’s rich, often-overlooked history.

The institution’s inaugural exhibition, In the Breath of Decay, features the debut solo showcase of Emirati artist Alyazia Al Nahyan. Running until January 20 at Iris Projects’ gallery in MiZa, the exhibition reflects the agency’s aim to celebrate innovative artists and unconventional approaches.

A Vision Rooted in Local Landscapes

Al Nahyan’s work draws deeply from the UAE’s landscapes, utilizing natural dyes from fruits, plants, and neem leaves to create evocative artworks on nontraditional fabrics. “Her paintings showcase a dynamic interplay of abstraction and movement,” noted curator Nadine Khalil.

Despite being on the cusp of graduating from Zayed University, Al Nahyan has already established a distinctive artistic vision. “I saw one of the students posting her painting on social media, and I knew this was the next artist,” recalled Iris Projects founder Maryam Al Falasi. She immediately sought out the works in person, captivated by their originality.

Al Falasi praised Khalil’s mentorship of Al Nahyan, emphasizing its transformative impact. “Having someone reflect that perspective is very important,” she said. “It makes the artist more confident in their works.”

Supporting the Next Wave of Gulf Artists

Iris Projects also represents artists like Roudhah Al Mazrouei, whose multidisciplinary work spans public installations and sculptures, and Juma Al Haj, known for large-scale paintings exploring identity through deconstructed language. Both artists, alongside Al Nahyan, were highlighted at the agency’s debut at Abu Dhabi Art.

Al Mazrouei’s recent projects include Tbaba, an installation celebrating the region’s pearl diving heritage, and Reverie, an interpretation of traditional Emirati jewelry showcased at Sikka.

A Multicultural and Historical Tapestry

Iris Projects embodies the UAE’s cosmopolitan essence, with Al Falasi determined to represent its diversity. “It’s interesting to see in art how people translate things differently,” she remarked, adding that social media has been instrumental in discovering new talent.

Beyond nurturing artists, Iris Projects delves into the UAE’s history. Al Falasi is building an archive inspired by her grandfather, Butti Bin Bishr, a figure closely linked to the nation’s founding leaders, including Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Rare photographs and documents, dating back to the 1940s, provide a window into pivotal moments, such as Sheikh Zayed’s 1968 hunting trip in Scotland.

Bridging Past and Future

Al Falasi envisions Iris Projects evolving into a multifaceted institution. “I see it growing to have a warehouse, a gallery space, and a research center for archives,” she explained, aiming to merge its dual focus on contemporary art and historical preservation.

Iris Projects’ debut signals a promising journey toward redefining the Gulf’s cultural landscape—nurturing talent while honoring the region’s storied past.

Dubai has achieved a significant milestone with the unveiling of the world’s largest mosaic artwork, the Zayed and Rashid Mural. This remarkable 2,198.7 square-metre installation, located at the picturesque Hatta Dam Water Falls, was presented by Brand Dubai in collaboration with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). The mural pays tribute to the UAE’s founding fathers, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, encapsulating their pivotal role in the creation of the nation and embodying the lasting values of unity and vision.

The artwork, officially recognized by Guinness World Records, is part of the #ZayedAndRashid campaign, which celebrates national milestones such as Flag Day on November 3 and the 53rd Eid Al Etihad on December 2. The piece itself immortalizes a historic photograph of the two leaders, reinforcing their enduring legacy and profound influence in shaping the UAE.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, expressed his pride in the project, stating, “This creative artwork features the images of the late Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid, aligning with the #ZayedAndRashid campaign. It embodies the values of the Union, celebrating the pivotal role these leaders played in establishing the UAE and laying the foundations of sustainable development.” He added that the Hatta Dam, a noted tourist attraction, will gain further significance from this art installation, which complements ongoing initiatives like the development of a 250MW pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant—a first for the GCC—illustrating Dubai’s dedication to innovation and sustainability.

The mural is part of the Dubai Street Museum initiative, an ambitious program launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in 2016. This initiative aims to enrich the city’s cultural identity through public art that resonates with Dubai’s history, values, and aspirations. Mona Al Marri, Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office, emphasized the importance of such collaborations, saying, “Guided by the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to turn Dubai into an open-air museum, we continue to develop public art initiatives that not only celebrate the UAE’s achievements but also embody our deep pride in the nation’s history and the enduring leadership of our founding fathers.”

Renowned Russian artist Sergey Korbasov spearheaded the project, working alongside a team of over 100 artisans from various parts of the world. Over four months, they meticulously assembled the mosaic, using 1.2 million individual pieces, each measuring 5×5 cm. The choice of materials, sourced locally from the Hatta region, including rocks and soil, lends the piece an intimate connection to its environment. The color palette draws inspiration from the traditional attire of the founding fathers, adding depth and historical context to the piece.

The mural stands as more than just a work of art; it is an immersive experience framed by the dramatic backdrop of the Hajjar mountains and the cascading waterfall. Shaima Al Suwaidi, Director of Brand Dubai, commented, “This mural stands as a testament to the vision of our founding fathers and the bright future they envisioned for generations to come. It also transforms the way we experience Hatta Dam, connecting visitors and locals to the story of the UAE in a meaningful and impactful way.”

This extraordinary tribute is expected to serve as a beacon of cultural pride and an inspiration for both residents and tourists, celebrating the UAE’s rich heritage and aspirations for future generations.

In an effort to support and boost the country’s vibrant creative economy, the UAE government has introduced a new federal law aimed at strengthening the arts sector. The legislation will provide a regulatory framework for non-profit art institutions, offering benefits to art professionals and fostering an environment conducive to artistic growth.

The law is designed to enhance the creative economy by stimulating artistic expression, attracting talent, and providing easier access to opportunities for artists. It establishes a unified national framework to streamline the licensing process for art institutions across the country.

One of the major benefits under this law is that art institutions will now be allowed to accept endowments, grants, donations, gifts, sponsorships, and even wills, all subject to specific legal guidelines. Additionally, these institutions will be eligible for corporate tax exemptions, further supporting their sustainability.

The law also encourages public art displays and aims to make artistic experiences accessible to all sectors of society through various programs. It allows both local and foreign entities to establish private museums, art exhibitions, and temporary performances, provided they obtain the necessary permits from the relevant authorities.

Furthermore, the law seeks to promote tolerance and coexistence among community members by encouraging artistic and creative activities. It also introduces temporary customs exemptions for art collections intended for exhibitions, stimulating further artistic collaboration.

To simplify the process, the licensing procedures for art-related activities will be managed by either local authorities or the Ministry of Culture, ensuring that they are more efficient and transparent. The law also regulates the types of artistic activities that institutions can engage in, including visual and performing arts, literature, music, academic lectures, and more.

Importantly, the law prohibits any artistic practice that is not authorized by the relevant authorities and restricts institutions from promoting hate speech or divisive content through their art.

This move further solidifies the UAE’s ambition to become a global leader in arts and culture, establishing the country as a beacon of creativity and innovation.

The post Artist Spotlight: Raghad Murad’s Creative Journey with Waggish appeared first on Magzoid Magazine.

]]>
Raghad Murad was a university student brimming with ideas when she decided to launch a sticker business. It was 2020, amidst the pandemic, and Raghad identified a gap in the market for eye-catching Arabic stickers. In her quest to find some for personal use, she was taken aback by the limited options available.

“I would find Arabic ones but they were expensive or the designs would be super cliché,” said Raghad. “So, that was the starting point, and because stickers are also the easiest form of artwork – it’s very simple.”

Thus, Waggish was created, a venture initiated by Raghad and three friends. Four years later, the growth of this small, homegrown business—fuelled by passion, pop culture, and the strength of female camaraderie—has been a remarkable success.

I first crossed paths with Raghad in January 2023. Since then, her friends have embarked on their own journeys, but Raghad remains steadfast in her mission to harness the full potential of her creative and commercial endeavours.

What does that evolution entail?

“The first two years were just really like building a library of designs and then we would produce them on everything – so, shirts and totes and mugs,” explains Raghad. “Now I’ve decided to take Waggish to its full potential by not just doing the stickers but do more original products, more collaborations with other brands.”

Raghad’s vibrant creations, characterized by bright colours, bold lines, and catchy slogans, stem from her artistic flair for digital design. Each original print is meticulously crafted by hand, featuring witty Arabic and English phrases that resonate with today’s internet culture. It’s a delightful way to celebrate life or make a statement, drawing people in.

In its ongoing transformation, Waggish has evolved beyond a simple sticker shop to a comprehensive creative brand. With its distinctive illustration style, it infuses everyday life with flair, finesse, and an abundance of personality.

“When Subway reached out, I was in complete shock,” recalls Raghad, reflecting on her favourite collaborations. “Now it’s an international brand that is collaborating with Waggish – that one was the biggest one when it came. After that, it was Rimmel London. TikTok Business was really big too and Shahid from MBC.”

For Raghad, stickers are more than just decorative items; they represent personal expression. They can visually convey strong opinions on various subjects, which is why Waggish embraces this aspect wholeheartedly.

“Stickers, at their essence, are a visual expression of who you are. The way that you put stickers on your laptop or your iPad, they tell stories about your hobbies, what you stand for, stuff you like.”

“I think because Waggish was born in the UAE, has all those Middle Eastern people following it and it’s like an Arab brand, we need to have a voice to share and promote that. It’s not like a political approach, but more like an awareness approach, more of like lets open this conversation – it doesn’t have to be scary to talk about those things.”
