Dubai has achieved a significant milestone with the unveiling of the world’s largest mosaic artwork, the Zayed and Rashid Mural. This remarkable 2,198.7 square-metre installation, located at the picturesque Hatta Dam Water Falls, was presented by Brand Dubai in collaboration with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). The mural pays tribute to the UAE’s founding fathers, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, encapsulating their pivotal role in the creation of the nation and embodying the lasting values of unity and vision.

The artwork, officially recognized by Guinness World Records, is part of the #ZayedAndRashid campaign, which celebrates national milestones such as Flag Day on November 3 and the 53rd Eid Al Etihad on December 2. The piece itself immortalizes a historic photograph of the two leaders, reinforcing their enduring legacy and profound influence in shaping the UAE.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, expressed his pride in the project, stating, “This creative artwork features the images of the late Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid, aligning with the #ZayedAndRashid campaign. It embodies the values of the Union, celebrating the pivotal role these leaders played in establishing the UAE and laying the foundations of sustainable development.” He added that the Hatta Dam, a noted tourist attraction, will gain further significance from this art installation, which complements ongoing initiatives like the development of a 250MW pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant—a first for the GCC—illustrating Dubai’s dedication to innovation and sustainability.

The mural is part of the Dubai Street Museum initiative, an ambitious program launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in 2016. This initiative aims to enrich the city’s cultural identity through public art that resonates with Dubai’s history, values, and aspirations. Mona Al Marri, Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office, emphasized the importance of such collaborations, saying, “Guided by the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to turn Dubai into an open-air museum, we continue to develop public art initiatives that not only celebrate the UAE’s achievements but also embody our deep pride in the nation’s history and the enduring leadership of our founding fathers.”

Renowned Russian artist Sergey Korbasov spearheaded the project, working alongside a team of over 100 artisans from various parts of the world. Over four months, they meticulously assembled the mosaic, using 1.2 million individual pieces, each measuring 5×5 cm. The choice of materials, sourced locally from the Hatta region, including rocks and soil, lends the piece an intimate connection to its environment. The color palette draws inspiration from the traditional attire of the founding fathers, adding depth and historical context to the piece.

The mural stands as more than just a work of art; it is an immersive experience framed by the dramatic backdrop of the Hajjar mountains and the cascading waterfall. Shaima Al Suwaidi, Director of Brand Dubai, commented, “This mural stands as a testament to the vision of our founding fathers and the bright future they envisioned for generations to come. It also transforms the way we experience Hatta Dam, connecting visitors and locals to the story of the UAE in a meaningful and impactful way.”

This extraordinary tribute is expected to serve as a beacon of cultural pride and an inspiration for both residents and tourists, celebrating the UAE’s rich heritage and aspirations for future generations.

A story of “Italian Excellence” born in 1948, Minotti – the family-owned company – is internationally recognised for its contemporary indoor and outdoor furniture in the residential, hospitality and yachting segments.

Minotti, renowned for its elegant Made in Italy designs for more than 75 years, strengthens its multi-year presence in the Middle East with the opening of its first flagship store in Dubai in collaboration with the long-standing local partner Al Tayer Insignia.

Inspired by the architecture of a villa, the showroom is located in the vibrant heart of the exclusive Jumeirah district and spreads over two levels, covering a total area of approximately 900 square metres. The opening expands on Minotti’s existing global presence in 80 countries through a network of more than 60 flagship stores and over 300 qualified dealers.

Conceived by the creative department of the company Minotti Studio, the interior design project reveals itself as a refined oasis, which combines the building’s original elements with the distinctive Minotti style, in an exhibition itinerary that turns into an engaging design experience.

“The GCC are one of the most relevant markets for our brand” comments Renato Minotti, co-CEO of Minotti “and the opening of the first flagship store in Dubai is a decisive achievement for our strategic and business objectives, as well as for the expansion of our network.”

“We are extremely proud of this opening in partnership with Al Tayer Insignia, with whom we share values and aesthetic, allowing us to be even closer to local customers. Dubai is an international and dynamic city, with consumers always looking for unique products, made with the finest Italian quality and fond of Minotti’s style” adds Roberto Minotti, Minotti’s co-CEO.

The façade is characterised by a large portal that welcomes visitors into an outdoor lobby, inviting them to immerse themselves in a sophisticated scenario with high ceilings and filled with natural light filtering through large windows.

Once inside, the majestic steel columns, a chestnut-coloured lacquered fireplace and a unique winter garden convey a dynamic yet balanced rhythm to the living, lounge and dining areas: a scenographic space that highlights the furnishings on show, including the novelties of the 2024 Collection, such as the modular seating systems Yves by Hannes Peer and Supermoon by Giampiero Tagliaferri, along with some of the brand’s best-sellers.

Every detail of the set-up is taken care of with sartorial attention, in a skilful combination of straight and sinuous lines and in a vivid interplay of light and shadow enriched by a wealth of materials and colours: moka-coloured oak panelling contrasts with silver Iranian travertine, steel with satin and reflective chrome finishes, and concrete, creating a palette of brown and grey shades that expresses great sophistication.

While the ground floor reinterprets the brand’s values in an original way, the first floor faithfully reproduces the interior of a residential space, where living, dining areas along with a master bedroom recreate intimate and charming atmospheres. On the same floor there is also a wide meeting room and two private areas for the creation of interior design projects.

Finally, there is an area dedicated to the outdoor world, in which iconic furnishings such as the Patio seating system by GamFratesi and the Bellagio Outdoor table by Gordon Guillaumier stand out, in harmonious dialogue with the Torii Nest Outdoor seating designed by Nendo. The new flagship store also has a second entrance providing a parking area, with access to the exhibition space through a foyer embellished with several designs from the Minotti collections.

Dee Sarai, CEO of Al Tayer Insignia, comments “Al Tayer Insignia is delighted to partner with Minotti for its first store opening in Dubai. Synonymous with craftsmanship and design excellence, Minotti is dedicated to bringing world-class luxury to the region and meeting the needs of consumers for high-quality furnishings.”.

Perfectly in harmony with the surrounding architectural context, the Minotti Dubai flagship store marks a milestone for the brand’s expansion in Middle East with local partner Al Tayer Insignia, offering an exclusive destination for contemporary design that combines authentic Italian values with an international attitude.

Kelly Hoppen, the South African-British interior designer known for her signature style, is embracing the dynamic changes in Dubai and the Middle East. She believes the region’s potential for growth, creativity, and design is often misunderstood, and she aims to challenge those perceptions.

Hoppen’s connection with Dubai deepened after working on the Lanai Island villas at the Tilal Al Ghaf development, a high-end community being built by Majid Al Futtaim. The project, known for its sustainable and experience-focused approach, marked her return to the region after several years. “I was buzzing when I came back. The city had evolved, and it had a new energy,” she recalls. Her interior design for the villas blends elegance with comfort, featuring swirled marble, natural wood accents, and soothing colours that harmonize with Dubai’s intense light.

The designer, whose career spans over 40 years, feels a growing bond with Dubai. She’s already working on multiple projects in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Riyadh, and is considering expanding her presence in the region. Hoppen is contemplating opening a studio in Dubai, believing that the rapid pace of development in the city warrants a local outpost to manage projects more efficiently while nurturing regional talent.

“I want to teach the next generation of designers here,” she says, envisioning a studio that would train local designers under the Kelly Hoppen Interiors umbrella. She sees vast opportunities in the region, particularly in craftsmanship and working with local talent, instead of relying solely on international designers.

Alongside her design work, Hoppen continues her partnership with Marina Home, a UAE-based retailer that sells her furniture collection. She first met the Marina Home team at a Maison&Objet fair in Paris, and their collaboration has been a success, with her pieces now available in the Middle East.

Hoppen is also passionate about cultural diversity and how it shapes design. “Dubai is such a diverse country with so many nationalities,” she explains, noting how this fusion of cultures inspires her work. She envisions a future where design reflects both the city’s rich heritage and its global influences, creating spaces that offer both comfort and individuality.

Her ambitions for the region extend beyond residential projects. Hoppen dreams of designing a boutique hotel in Dubai, inspired by the vibrancy of cities like Paris, Milan, and New York. With a vision of smaller, intimate hotels, she wants to bring a unique style to the hospitality sector in the city.

The pandemic, Hoppen believes, has shifted how people view living spaces. “It’s about family and community,” she says, observing that Dubai’s evolution into a city with both luxurious villas and community-style living is ahead of similar developments in Europe. She’s excited by the shift in design and sees Dubai as a city of the future, one where innovation and tradition merge seamlessly.

Dubai is set to welcome Comedian, one of contemporary art’s most debated works, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. This unconventional piece, simply a banana duct-taped to a wall, gained international attention and mixed reactions after its initial showcase at Art Basel Miami in 2019. On November 4, the artwork will be available for viewing at Sotheby’s in Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) for just one day before heading to New York for auction, where it’s projected to fetch nearly Dh5.5 million.

Since its launch, Comedian has stirred ongoing debates on what constitutes art, sparking both fascination and critique across the art world. Its stop in Dubai forms part of a global tour ahead of its auction, where it’s expected to draw a high bid from collectors.

As Comedian continues to tour, art fans and skeptics alike have the chance to experience the infamous piece, whose exhibitions have included performances like a spontaneous “eating” of the banana itself. Cattelan’s work has become a cultural phenomenon, testing boundaries and igniting discussions on the value of simplicity in modern art.

New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) has collaborated with Sedar Global, a prominent Middle Eastern interiors brand, to release a collection of home furnishings inspired by classic artworks from the Met’s vast collection. This line, with a focus on nature themes, features designs adapted from celebrated artists like Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Katsushika Hokusai, and Gustav Klimt. The pieces include wallpapers, curtains, upholstery, and pillows, aiming to make art “accessible in a way that fits seamlessly into the home,” as Sedar Global’s creative director, Nahel Selo, explained.

The initial collection celebrates elements of nature—land, sea, and air—which resonate globally and carry unique significance in the Middle East. Selo noted that “nature has a universal appeal” that speaks to the diverse yet harsh landscapes of the region, while also suiting both contemporary and traditional interiors. The pieces are available for individual homeowners and interior designers alike, with Selo predicting that “sea-inspired” designs could be particularly popular among coastal dwellers due to the calming effect of oceanic imagery.

Future releases will explore other themes from the Met’s 1.5 million works, which span 5,000 years of art history. Sedar also hopes to incorporate Middle Eastern influences, aiming to blend global art heritage with regional cultural expressions. Selo shared that the team is actively exploring opportunities to include local artistry, which would “add that unique Middle Eastern touch” to upcoming designs.

In his own home, Selo prefers bold colors and industrial aesthetics, revealing a personal taste for abstract works by Wassily Kandinsky. He believes Kandinsky’s geometric styles can bring depth and become focal points in a room.

This innovative Met x Sedar collaboration not only broadens access to fine art but also introduces art as a versatile part of everyday living spaces.

Iraqi-American artist Vian Sora is set to unveil her latest exhibition, “House of Pearls,” at The Third Line, opening on October 31 and running until December 5. This captivating collection utilizes pearls as a powerful metaphor, symbolizing the quest for stability and the structural integrity essential for life’s regeneration, as described by the gallery.

Sora’s work delves into the cyclical nature of existence, examining the contrasting solid and fluid states inherent in nature, from which pearls are formed. This thematic exploration reflects her personal journey; Sora left Baghdad following the US invasion of Iraq, and through her art, she articulates her experiences as an immigrant and war survivor. The exhibition encapsulates the uncertainties and shifting boundaries that define existence, highlighting the physical, mental, and emotional toll that cross-cultural experiences can impose.

In her creative process, Sora starts with a limited palette of just three colors, gradually expanding her artwork to encompass up to 20 shades. Her pieces portray imagined landscapes and seas, often embellished with distorted Arabic calligraphy. These visual elements aim to evoke the vulnerability and resilience of displaced individuals. Sora believes that abstraction enables her to explore the subconscious in ways that traditional illustration cannot achieve.

Through “House of Pearls,” Sora invites viewers to engage with the complex interplay between beauty and hardship, prompting reflections on the human condition in a world marked by displacement and transformation. This exhibition promises to be a profound experience, encouraging contemplation on the resilience of life amidst chaos.

The Middle East’s art and design landscape is poised for a significant transformation with the launch of Editions, an innovative fair dedicated exclusively to limited edition artworks. Scheduled to take place from November 6 to 9, 2024, at the Dubai Design District (d3), this inaugural event is expected to be a cornerstone of Dubai Design Week, presenting a thoughtfully curated selection of works from both regional and international artists, designers, and galleries.

A Unique Opportunity for Collectors

Editions marks the first event of its kind in the region, providing art enthusiasts the rare chance to explore and acquire high-quality, limited edition pieces. Exhibitors from the UAE, Lebanon, Kuwait, Jordan, and a robust international representation from countries such as Germany, Colombia, Italy, Lithuania, and France will participate, appealing to seasoned collectors and newcomers alike.

This fair aims to connect the esteemed realms of Art Dubai and Downtown Design, two of the city’s most prominent cultural highlights, showcasing works that embody the pinnacle of creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation. Attendees can expect a diverse range of mediums and artistic practices, including ceramics, custom sculptures, limited edition prints, and photography.

Insight from Industry Leaders

Mette Degn-Christensen, Director of Downtown Design, shared insights on the burgeoning demand for unique, limited edition pieces in the region. “As art and design continue to grow within Dubai’s cultural landscape, Editions offers a new platform where visitors can connect with independent designers and discover works that are otherwise inaccessible in the Middle East,” she stated.

Khadija Al Bastaki, Senior Vice President of Dubai Design District (d3), highlighted the alignment of Editions with Dubai’s overarching creative economy goals. “Dubai’s maturing art scene is opening up to the public more than ever before. This fair allows individuals to be more active patrons and offers emerging talents a credible platform to expand their reach,” she noted.

Noteworthy Exhibitions and Collections

A standout feature of the fair will be the Contemporary Design section, which will showcase works that seamlessly blend form, function, and superior craftsmanship. Celebrated Emirati designer Aljoud Lootah is set to unveil new creations in celebration of her studio’s tenth anniversary. Other remarkable exhibits will include Atelier Alain Ellouz’s alabaster lighting designs and minimalist industrial furniture pieces from Blooker Gallery.

The Ceramics collection promises to display artists who are redefining the boundaries of stoneware and porcelain. SANATORIUM will present Çağla Köseoğulları’s innovative folding clay series, while Hestia Gallery will introduce Roxane Lahidji, who crafts luxurious objects from sustainable materials, including salt.

In the realm of Works on Paper, galleries like Comptoir Des Mines Galerie and Rarares Gallery will feature a variety of techniques ranging from watercolor to collage, highlighting the intersection of human experience and nature. Limited edition screenprints by Iraqi artist Dia Azzawi and vibrant resin works by British artist Nat Bowen will also be featured prominently.

Photography and Engaging Discussions

Photography aficionados can anticipate compelling exhibits from Gulf Photo Plus and Leila Heller Gallery, showcasing works that delve into cultural heritage and contemporary social landscapes. Highlights include Hussain AlMoosawi’s architectural portraits of the UAE and Shirin Neshat’s acclaimed Tooba series.

Alongside the art fair, Editions will present The Forum, a series of insightful talks led by industry leaders and experts who will explore trends, the value of editioned works, and the significance of art and design in shaping community identity. These discussions are crafted to educate and inspire both novice and seasoned collectors.

Tickets for the event are affordably priced at Dh50 for a single day and Dh80 for a three-day pass, which also includes access to Downtown Design. Editions aims to create an inclusive environment for art enthusiasts and collectors to discover and invest in unique artistic expressions.

]]>
In a unique blend of art and fine dining, La Cantine du Faubourg in Dubai has once again brought together two creative realms, offering an immersive experience for art and food lovers alike. Curated by Sabrina Catabelle, a distinguished art advisor in Dubai, the restaurant’s latest exhibition titled ‘The Sin Within’ features evocative artworks by Omani-born artist Fahad Salim, now based in Dubai.

Organized in collaboration with Urbanist Art Gallery, the exhibition opened on October 10 and will run for six weeks, allowing guests to enjoy fine French cuisine while being surrounded by Salim’s introspective creations. “The intimate setting of the restaurant allows attendees to explore contemporary art, gain insights into his work, and enjoy a moment where art and gastronomy converge,” said Catabelle.

A Deep Dive into Human Emotion

Fahad Salim, a self-taught artist with a modern and contemporary focus, uses bold colors and patterns to depict human emotions, desires, and internal conflicts. His artwork is a reflection of his life’s journeys, joys, frustrations, and challenges. “Art has always been with me since my childhood, and creates a bond with my roots,” Salim shared. His paintings, full of vibrant hues, explore the depths of human experience, offering a powerful visual dialogue that complements the restaurant’s ambiance.

A Holistic Aesthetic Experience

La Cantine du Faubourg has long been a hotspot for combining art, music, images, and food, creating an environment where each visit feels like a cultural adventure. Curator Catabelle believes the exhibition presents a chance to merge the world of art with gourmet experiences. “In such spaces, the conversation between the visual and culinary arts deepens, providing visitors with a holistic aesthetic experience,” she said.

Diners can indulge in Mediterranean-inspired dishes while immersing themselves in Salim’s captivating artwork, as La Cantine continues its tradition of art-inspired menus. Salim’s artwork influences the culinary experience, adding a visual dimension to the meals served, creating a multisensory journey that merges taste and sight.

The Growing Trend of Art and Fine Dining

In recent years, art and fine dining have intertwined globally, blending visual masterpieces with culinary arts to create unique, immersive experiences. “The colours and textures on a canvas echo the flavours and sensations on a plate,” said Catabelle, noting that the trend is flourishing. Every dish becomes a visual masterpiece, meticulously arranged, much like an artist’s carefully curated work. This innovative intersection between art and food has given rise to movements like The Art of Plating, where chefs design their dishes to resemble artwork.

Magpie, a leading observer of Dubai’s cultural scene, commented on the exhibition, stating that ‘The Sin Within’ highlights how art can transform pain into beauty, and trauma into joy. “Bold colours suspend and transcend traumatic events, turning them into something bright and joyful,” Magpie noted.

A Sensory Journey

La Cantine du Faubourg offers not just a meal but an artistic experience where diners can feast on both visual and culinary delights, surrounded by panoramic views of Dubai. As Catabelle summed up, “Dining in these settings becomes more than just a meal; it is an extension of the art, a multisensory journey through sight, taste, and ambiance.”

In conclusion, as the relationship between art and fine dining continues to evolve, restaurants like La Cantine du Faubourg lead the charge in offering unforgettable experiences. The fusion of these two creative forms allows for endless possibilities in innovation, turning dining and art into an unforgettable celebration of the senses.
