The Dubai Sculpture Symposium 2024, an unprecedented event organized by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), is taking place at the Al Shindagha Historical District, gathering renowned sculptors from around the world. This pioneering symposium seeks to spotlight the art of sculpture, enhance Dubai’s cultural identity, and foster collaboration between local and international artists. The event, which will run until 22 December 2024, is designed to nurture creativity and innovation in the world of public art, creating a platform for exchange, learning, and showcasing exceptional artistic expressions.

A Fusion of Art, Heritage, and Innovation

This inaugural edition of the symposium features a vibrant mix of more than 15 artists from various countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, China, Ukraine, and beyond. The participating artists bring unique perspectives and diverse sculpting techniques, creating a global dialogue within the artistic community.

Among the standout works is Emirati artist Dr. Mohammed Yousif‘s sculpture titled Shells, which reflects Dubai’s beauty and essence through the imagery of two mysterious shells. Meanwhile, Azza Al Qubaisi, another Emirati artist, presents Dubai Heart, a dynamic sculpture blending local cultural elements with modern interpretations to symbolize the rapid transformation of the UAE.

Syrian artist Aktham Abdul Hamid showcases Cultural Accumulation, a thought-provoking piece that explores humanity’s historical journey, evolving from ancient experiences to the contemporary age of artificial intelligence. On the other hand, Chinese artist Liu Yang presents Starry Sky in Dubai, which uses light effects to capture the captivating beauty of Dubai’s night skies. Saudi artist Mohammed Al Thagafi’s Conversation represents societal harmony, with its delicate balance of soft and strong elements.

Global Artists Draw Inspiration from Dubai

The symposium also features contributions from artists who have drawn inspiration from Dubai’s rich heritage and modern aspirations. For instance, Romanian sculptor Ana Maria Negara presents Fractal, symbolizing the geometric harmony found in Dubai’s architectural landscape. Georgian artist Jhon Gogaberishvili‘s Fountain metaphorically portrays water droplets as symbols of balance between chaos and beauty. Bulgarian artist Georgi Minchev’s Fragment of Something Bigger examines life’s contrasts through dynamic sculptural forms.

Spanish artist José Millán offers Harmonic Connections, a sculpture that illustrates the concept of unity and the elegance of human relationships through the intertwining of two elements at a central point. Additionally, Ukrainian artist Lyudmyla Mysko, known for her monumental sculptures, showcases Magnetic Designer, a series that harmoniously blends physical forms and spatial voids.

Artists such as Tunisian Mohamed Bouaziz explore themes of life, movement, and environmental preservation, as seen in his sculpture Our Land, while Egyptian artist Said Badr presents City Gate, a piece symbolizing the connection between past, present, and future.

Workshops and Discussions on Art’s Role in Society

The symposium will also feature a series of specialized workshops and panels, which include discussions on sustainable art practices, preserving historical sculptures, and exploring interactive sculpture techniques. These sessions are scheduled for 14 and 21 December and aim to involve both artists and the public in valuable dialogues about how art shapes modern, sustainable societies.

The event will conclude with a special recognition ceremony, honoring the creative contributions of the artists involved. In line with its commitment to promoting global cultural dialogue, Dubai Culture continues to solidify Dubai’s position as a leading hub for art and creativity.

Important note: The symposium is not open to children to ensure a safe and focused environment for all attendees.

The landscape of art consumption is undergoing a significant shift, thanks to technological advances in television. Much like Spotify revolutionized the music industry and Netflix disrupted cinema, television brands are now stepping into the realm of visual art. Brands such as Samsung and LG are pioneering ways to merge high-tech displays with the art world, inviting viewers to experience masterpieces in new and innovative ways.

The New Frontiers of Art on Screens

LG has taken notable strides in integrating art with technology. The Korean electronics giant sponsored Frieze art fairs, showcasing transparent OLED screens that featured pieces inspired by renowned Korean abstract ink master Suh Se Ok at Frieze Seoul 2024. Last year at Frieze London, LG presented works by Italian artist Quayola, demonstrating their commitment to fostering art through cutting-edge technology. Their 65-inch 4K smart TV, the Easel, is designed to resemble a traditional canvas leaning against a wall. The Gallery Mode feature allows users to view artworks seamlessly, transforming the television into an art display.

Samsung’s Frame TV series, designed to mimic wall-mounted artwork, has similarly made waves since the Samsung Art Store’s debut in 2017. With over 2,500 artworks from over 800 artists available, subscribers can enjoy pieces by masters like Botticelli and Da Vinci, modernists such as Salvador Dalí and Monet, and contemporary icons like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Partnering with museums like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée d’Orsay, Samsung’s platform provides a unique opportunity to experience art from around the world. Recent additions include works from the Museum of Modern Art’s extensive collection.

Bringing Art to More People

Daria Greene, Global Curator of the Samsung Art Store, spoke about the transformative potential of digital platforms in broadening art access. She acknowledged that while some in the art world may hesitate to embrace digital displays, believing that art should be experienced in person, these platforms create new opportunities for global audiences. “Art and technology are closely linked, and together they can create greater exposure, new opportunities, and increased representation of diverse voices,” Greene said. Digital art platforms also enable viewers who may lack the resources to visit galleries in person to enjoy works from prestigious institutions.

Greene highlighted the evolving relationship between traditional art and digital formats. Artists like Shinique Smith are already creating works specifically designed for digital viewing, blurring the lines between the medium and the message. The shift towards digital does not mean physical museums will become obsolete, but rather that new methods enrich the way art is shared and experienced.

Innovations in Screen Technology

Samsung’s 2024 edition of The Frame TV is particularly noteworthy, having earned the Validated ArtfulColor certification from Pantone. This accolade underscores the TV’s advanced color reproduction technology, ensuring that colors appear as true-to-life as possible under standard lighting conditions. The certification highlights Samsung’s commitment to creating an artistic experience that closely mirrors the visual experience of observing physical artworks.

Future Prospects for Artists and Viewers

When asked about potential future plans for artists to showcase their work on the Samsung Art Store, Greene noted that while no such plans are available at the moment, the platform operates on a revenue-sharing model that supports participating artists. This ensures that artists benefit from their work being seen on a global scale.

Greene also spoke about the growing potential for artists exhibiting at fairs and galleries to leverage digital platforms. “We see a significant opportunity to collaborate with artists actively exhibiting their work at fairs and conferences,” she explained. The expansion of the digital art market and its ability to bridge the gap between the physical and digital worlds opens up new possibilities for art appreciation worldwide.

Art Consumption Like Never Before

The idea of an “art chart” akin to music streaming services such as Spotify is intriguing, and Greene touched on this concept by mentioning how the Art Store curates seasonal and culturally relevant collections. “We develop seasonal palettes, color trends, and culturally significant collections,” Greene said, adding that these curated selections have become some of the most popular among subscribers. For instance, this summer featured vibrant beach scenes, pieces from The Met, and works celebrating Hispanic artists. As the holiday season approaches, Samsung plans to unveil more timely collections that resonate with viewers.

The combination of high-quality screen technology and the integration of art curation on smart TVs are creating a new dialogue around how art can be consumed. This growing innovation could make art more accessible and engaging than ever before, promising to reshape the way we interact with and appreciate visual art.

The post 5 Must-See Exhibitions in London During Frieze 2024 appeared first on Magzoid Magazine.

]]>
As Frieze London and Frieze Masters open their doors to art enthusiasts, the question looms: has London’s status in the art world weakened compared to the rising influence of Art Basel Paris? With the UK’s art market cooling, reflected in several galleries closing down, some argue that London’s dominance in art sales is slipping. But cultural institutions like Frieze remain unfazed by the competition across the Channel. Eva Langret, Frieze London’s artists director, believes the two cities can coexist, stating, “there’s space for the two cities to be great together.”

For those needing a break from the Frieze frenzy, there are plenty of standout exhibitions in London to explore this week. Despite concerns about the art market, the city continues to be a cultural heavyweight. Here are five must-see shows during Frieze 2024.

Yayoi Kusama at Victoria Miro

One of the most anticipated shows, Yayoi Kusama’s latest exhibition at Victoria Miro is bound to draw crowds. Upon entering, visitors are invited to experience her new “Infinity Room,” titled Beauty Described by a Spherical Heart. Imagine stepping inside a giant disco ball surrounded by mirrors and flashing LED lights. While disorienting at first, your senses quickly adjust. The LED lights shift through various colors before resetting to a bright white, as a large mirrored orb in the room reflects everything, including your own image. Though it may feel like a gimmick, it’s undeniably a fun experience.

Upstairs, Kusama’s signature fabric tendrils and polka-dots adorn the gallery, with one of the installations stretching dramatically from the ceiling to the ground floor. On the outdoor deck, Ladder to Heaven, a 13-foot tall stainless-steel sculpture perforated with polka dots, stands prominently.

Turner Prize 2024 at Tate Britain

The once-iconic Turner Prize has been quieter in recent years. With its relevance often questioned, some wonder if it still holds the excitement it once had in the 1990s. This year’s shortlisted artists, including Pio Abad, Claudette Johnson, Jasleen Kaur, and Delaine Le Bas, aim to reinvigorate the prize.

Jasleen Kaur’s Alter Altar stands out as a personal favorite—a red Ford Escort draped with an oversized doily, blaring a mix of hip-hop, pop, and Islamic devotional chants. It captures the essence of the Turner Prize. The winner will be revealed on December 3, 2024.

Francis Bacon at the National Portrait Gallery

Francis Bacon’s powerful portraits have finally arrived at the National Portrait Gallery, focusing on how the artist pushed the boundaries of portraiture. The show, Human Presence, brings together 55 of Bacon’s works, highlighting the emotional turmoil of his life and relationships, including his lover George Dyer, who died by suicide in 1971. Bacon’s “Black Triptychs,” created after Dyer’s death, convey the grief and intensity that redefined modern portraiture.

Though the National Portrait Gallery doesn’t typically feature Bacon’s work, curator Rosie Broadley noted that the exhibition challenges the institution’s traditional criteria.

Claude Monet at Courtauld Institute of Art

Monet’s serene waterlilies are famous, but his depictions of London’s fog-covered landmarks are equally mesmerizing. Charing Cross Bridge, the Thames is one of the standout pieces at the Courtauld’s current exhibition, showcasing Monet’s skill at portraying the subtle play of light through London’s pollution. This collection of 21 works, being shown in the UK for the first time, is a rare glimpse into the artist’s time in London. His depiction of atmospheric light in fog-shrouded settings is a stark contrast to his brighter works from France.

Monet once wrote to his wife about the challenge of painting London’s fog: “the fog assumes all sorts of colors,” he mused. This exhibit provides a much-needed reprieve from the hustle of Frieze.

Mire Lee at Tate Modern

Walking into Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, now reimagined as an industrial, almost dystopian, womb, is a chilling experience. Mire Lee, an artist who stunned audiences at the 2022 Venice Biennale, has transformed the massive space with her show, Open Wound. At the center is a large turbine draped with pink, skin-like materials, evoking an unsettling, visceral feeling. Other skeletal forms and draped skins hang around the space, suggesting themes of human vulnerability and mortality. The mechanical, grinding movements of the installation serve as a reminder of our own fragility, perhaps even hinting at humanity’s potential end.

Lee’s work leaves much open to interpretation, but its haunting and unsettling brilliance is hard to ignore.

Whether you’re attending Frieze or exploring the city’s other exhibitions, London remains a beacon of cultural vibrancy in the art world.

Saudi-Bahraini artist Faisal Samra has dedicated his life to the pursuit of art, experimenting across mediums to explore the human condition. From his humble beginnings in Bahrain to becoming an internationally acclaimed artist, Samra’s creative journey is one of defiance, discovery, and dedication.

Faisal Samra’s Early Life: A Childhood Shaped by Charcoal

Born in Bahrain in 1956 to a Saudi family, Faisal Samra’s passion for art emerged early. Growing up in a traditional Khaleeji-style home, Samra began experimenting with charcoal on walls. “As a child, I would draw on walls, tables, even the streets,” he recalls. Despite the lack of art supplies, Samra’s early fascination with drawing laid the foundation for a lifelong obsession with visual expression.

The Move to Saudi Arabia and the Discovery of Colors

At 12, Samra’s family relocated to Saudi Arabia, where his artistic passion continued to grow. It was at school that he first encountered formal art education. An art teacher introduced him to colored pencils and paper, encouraging him to channel his creativity productively.By the time he was 14, Samra had received his first art book on Michelangelo, which cemented his love for the craft. “Art was, and still is, my life. Consequently, if I’m not an artist, then I don’t exist,” he says.

Pursuit of Paris: Overcoming Barriers for Art Education

In the 1970s, Samra set his sights on studying art in Paris, aiming to attend the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Despite resistance from his family, he saved money while working at Aramco and successfully secured a scholarship from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Media. In 1974, at the age of 18, he moved to Paris, where he immersed himself in modern and contemporary European art. This experience not only honed his technical skills but broadened his artistic vision.

Establishing a Global Presence: Exhibitions and Recognition

During the 1980s, Samra’s career began to gain traction, with exhibitions in Paris and collaborations as an art consultant at the Institut du Monde Arabe. His works were eventually acquired by prestigious institutions, including the British Museum, Jameel Art Foundation, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, and Bahrain National Museum. Today, he is represented by Ayyam Gallery in Dubai, solidifying his position as one of the most significant artists from the Arab world.

A Multifaceted Approach: Exploring Film, Performance, and Painting

Samra’s body of work spans various mediums, including film, performance, painting, and photography. “I don’t like still water; I prefer it to be moving,” he explains. His constant experimentation is driven by a desire to explore man’s existence in a complex and ever-changing world. One of his best-known series, Distorted Reality, explores media biases and features figures in blurred motion, confronting the distortion of truth in the digital age.

The Artist’s Philosophy: A Bold Critique of Modern Society

Samra’s work often carries a critical edge, addressing the challenges and contradictions of modern life. His recent series Immortal Moment (Coping With The Shock) portrays faces in violent motion, reflecting the chaos and turbulence of today’s world. “We are living in times of change, but not necessarily development,” he says. “As we invent, we also destroy.” His art captures this tension, forcing viewers to reflect on the fractured state of humanity.

With a career that spans decades and continents, Faisal Samra’s Work continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art, offering a bold and often unsettling reflection on the human condition.

UAE Art serves multiple purposes: it heals, captivates, and guides humanity forward. This belief is at the heart of a UAE-based guild formed by Indian artists and art enthusiasts on April 11, 2010. The guild was created with the goal of fostering a deeper appreciation for art and culture.

Promod, an Indian expatriate who passed away two years ago, and a group of friends, initially came together in Satwa. These individuals, despite their commercial careers, shared a profound passion for art, which they had to set aside due to practical demands.

Vineeth, the guild’s secretary, explained: “The group has now expanded to include around 25 artists, each with a significant connection to art. Whether they are celebrated artists or enthusiastic amateurs, they unite through this Guild to pursue their artistic passions.”

Under the guidance of distinguished artists like K.K.N. Nambiar, Vineeth has participated in numerous group exhibitions, specializing in oil on canvas and continually evolving his personal style.

“Many of us had to shelve our artistic inclinations in favor of commercial careers. To reconnect with our creativity, we organized regular meetups on Fridays or other free days to paint and promote art,” Vineeth added.

Since its inception, the Guild has been active in hosting painting exhibitions, workshops, and discussions across Dubai and Sharjah. These events offer artists a platform to display and sell their work.

Key figures in the Guild include Kumar Chadayamangalam (current president), Uday Russelpuram, Ramesh Vellinezhi, Shafi Beypore, Narayan Kadavath, art director Nisar Ibrahim, and Sadasivan Ambalamedu. These members balance their professional lives with their artistic pursuits, ensuring they dedicate time to their passion.

The Guild conducts workshops in community parks to bridge the gap between artists and the public. “Our workshops aim to clarify fundamental questions about art, such as the nature of abstract art, making it more accessible to everyone,” Vineeth explained.

Their latest initiative involved a workshop with underprivileged children, where they created a unique art installation and shared inspiring stories of artists.

The Guild also supports its members and the community in challenging times. Following the Kerala floods, they organized a fundraiser, creating and selling art to contribute to relief efforts.

The Guild’s members hold a shared belief that art transcends barriers, offering a universal connection and understanding that few other things can.

In recent developments, the De Pere Cultural Foundation has initiated legal action against Exhibits Development Group (EDG), a St. Paul-based company that specializes in traveling exhibitions. The lawsuit, filed in a Wisconsin court last month, accuses EDG of repeatedly breaching its contract to produce exhibitions on topics like the Beatles, the Grammy Awards, dinosaurs, and Lego for the Mulva Cultural Center. EDG is known for curating traveling art exhibitions featuring works by renowned artists such as Rembrandt, Picasso, Joan Miró, Edgar Degas, and Marc Chagall, among others.

The foundation claims that EDG “could not live up to its promises” and failed to secure artifacts for the dinosaur exhibition, citing unspecified “terrorist attacks in the Middle East” as the cause. The foundation is seeking at least $1.4 million in damages.

While the lawsuit remains unresolved, it brings to the forefront the burgeoning yet underexplored business of traveling exhibition companies, a vital component for smaller and regional museums.

The lawsuit traveling exhibition companies like EDG have become indispensable for museums with limited resources, offering access to exhibitions that might otherwise be too costly or complex to produce independently. One such company, Curatorial, was founded in 1988 by CEO Graham Howe, focusing primarily on photography shows due to their ease of transport. Curatorial now operates both for-profit and nonprofit arms, providing services that range from facilitating museum-originated shows to staging independent exhibitions and collaborating with artists and estates.

“We’re offering an economical, shared cost model that represents a better deal than they would have if they were doing it themselves,” said Phillip Prodger, Curatorial’s executive director. “Museums, particularly small museums with limited resources, have access to collections that they may not have access to on their own.”

Graham Howe added, “There’s always been a fundamental truth about art museums and museums in general: they’re always squeezed. They always need to do more programming for less money, and that’s a reality that we responded to.”

With around 500 to 600 of the 35,000 museums in the United States capable of hosting traveling exhibitions, mid-size science museums and institutions without permanent collections, like the Mulva Cultural Center, are the most frequent clients. These institutions often rely on companies like EDG and Landau Traveling Exhibitions for “turnkey” shows. The costs for these exhibitions can vary widely, with Landau charging between $20,000 to $100,000 for a three-month run, depending on the rarity and importance of the items and the complexity of the logistics.

“A lot of the ones we deal with come either from one or a limited number of sources, like one museum, one private collection, or one foundation,” said Jeff Landau, director of Landau Traveling Exhibitions.

Over his 35-year career, Landau has organized a diverse range of traveling exhibitions, including shows on artists like Robert Indiana, Elizabeth Catlett, and David Hockney.

Exhibition Hub, a Brussels-based company founded in 2015, has recently concentrated on digital art and immersive exhibitions, such as “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience.” According to John Zaller, the company’s US executive producer, these highly commercial exhibitions attract visitors who might not typically visit a museum. “But then when they come, they say, ‘Wow, I really like this museum. I think I’m going to become a member,'” Zaller said.

As the demand for traveling exhibitions grows, so do the challenges. The lawsuit, which raised costs for shipping, crating, and other logistical aspects, has placed additional pressure on companies like Curatorial and the American Federation for the Arts (AFA). AFA, which has focused on exhibitions featuring underrepresented artists following the 2020 murder of George Floyd, has had to navigate similar difficulties. The organization fundraises to make such exhibitions more accessible to museums, often arranging payment plans for institutions.

“The way that we operate, some of those costs we have to pass on, and not all museums are prepared to pay it,” said Prodger. “It’s a really difficult situation.”

For immersive exhibitions, additional hurdles such as technology development and installation staff further complicate the process. Zaller emphasized the importance of managing expectations, particularly when costs rise unexpectedly.

“Museums were kind of at the point where they were ready to take on these kinds of shows, and they weren’t necessarily doing as many of them as they felt they should,” said Pauline Forlenza, AFA’s director and CEO, discussing the shift towards more inclusive exhibitions.

As the industry continues to evolve, communication between exhibition companies and museums remains crucial. Clear goals and expectations are key to avoiding disputes like the one currently unfolding between the De Pere Cultural Foundation and EDG.

Qatar Museums is making a significant cultural statement at the 2024 Summer Olympics, using the global event to promote its heritage and cultural diplomacy. The Gulf nation’s premier art institution is marking its 40-year Olympic journey with an array of exhibitions and public events in Paris.

Among the highlights are several exhibitions, book launches, and a special event at the renowned Le Dali restaurant at Le Meurice hotel, featuring Doha’s Jiwan restaurant to spotlight Qatari culinary traditions. Additionally, Qatar Museums is unveiling the first Arabic translation of “Textes Choisis” by Pierre de Coubertin, the French historian credited with founding the modern Olympic Games.

Central to the celebration are two key exhibitions curated by Qatar Museums and the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum: “Olympism: More Than a Dream,” showcasing 40 years of Qatar’s Olympic history, and “Esports: A Game Changer,” which explores the intersection of esports with traditional sports. The former runs until August 25, and the latter until September 8 at Residence Citeaux in Paris.

“Olympism: More Than a Dream” features notable memorabilia, including Qatar’s first Olympic medal, a bronze won by Mohammed Suleiman in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and Mutaz Barshim’s gold medal in the high jump from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

In discussing the initiative, Mohammed Saad Al-Rumaihi, CEO of Qatar Museums, emphasized, “In parallel with the Summer 2024 Olympics, the last few weeks witnessed Qatar Museums organizing a spectacular lineup of programs in Paris, affirming our longstanding commitment to cultural diplomacy and role in highlighting Qatar’s history and culture in the international arena.”

He added, “Stemming from the 2014 Cultural Agreement between Qatar and France, the summer program continues the legacy of the Qatar-France 2020 Year of Culture.
