Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), in collaboration with Alserkal Arts Foundation, has unveiled Resonance, a site-specific installation in Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood. This new artwork is part of the Dubai Public Art Strategy, which aims to showcase unique artistic experiences that will enrich Dubai’s creative identity, enhance its global reputation, and transform the city into an open-air gallery for everyone to enjoy. The installation was revealed at the 13th Sikka Art & Design Festival, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture.

Bringing the Past and Present Together Through Art

The Resonance installation, created by graphic designer Maryam Namvar and architect Neda Salmanpour, is an immersive and interactive art piece that invites visitors into a sensory conversation with the past and present of Al Shindagha. Curated by Munira Al Sayegh, the piece comprises three delicately suspended metal panels that move with the wind, reflect shifting light, and echo the rhythms of the creek. The installation draws inspiration from the constant movement of water, trade, architecture, languages, and communities that have long shaped life in this area. The piece’s dynamic nature highlights the cultural evolution of Al Shindagha, incorporating elements of the community’s history, while also adding a contemporary touch.

Promoting Public Art for Community Engagement

Dr. Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash, CEO of the Arts, Design and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, stressed that public art plays an essential role in the emirate’s cultural ecosystem. He emphasized that the Dubai Public Art Strategy is a platform for artists to draw from Dubai’s rich cultural heritage and express their creative visions. “Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood stands as a witness to the evolution of Dubai into a global city,” said Dr. Bin Kharbash, highlighting the importance of the site in Dubai’s collective memory.

Maryam Namvar and Neda Salmanpour, the artists behind the installation, said, “Al Shindagha serves as a cultural and historical touchstone, and, with our artwork Resonance, we wanted to capture the emotion of being there. We aim to contribute to the ever-evolving culture and context of the city by creating a piece that will evoke thought, emotion, and conversation.”

Continuing Dubai’s Public Art Journey

Resonance is the first in a series of three Dubai Public Art projects, which will continue to bring thought-provoking art into public spaces like the Shindagha Historic District, Al Quoz Creative Zone, and Hatta. This initiative reflects Dubai Culture & Arts Authority and Alserkal Arts Foundation’s ongoing commitment to nurturing artistic excellence among UAE-based artists, fostering deeper connections between the city’s creative community and its people.

The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has initiated the countdown for the 15th edition of the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre, set to occur from 21 to 28 October. This festival aims to enhance the prominence of Emirati theatre, a vital component of the creative economy, by shining a light on local talent in the global cultural arena. Young artists are invited to showcase their distinctive works that echo the aspirations and values of the community.

Taking place at the Cultural and Scientific Association in Al Mamzar, this year’s festival will present seven performances inspired by real-life narratives, featuring various national theatre groups. The opening show, ‘Yurja ‘Adam Al Ittisal’ (‘Please Do Not Call’), written by Mohammed Saleh Al-Sidi and directed by Abdullah Al Hammadi, will be performed by the Al Ain Theatre Group, competing for the festival’s prestigious awards.

The festival promises an engaging lineup of performances and discussions for theatre aficionados. On the second day, attendees will enjoy ‘Sarkhat Amal’ (‘Cry of Hope’), authored by Abdullah Youssef and directed by Ahlam Adel, presented by the Abu Dhabi Arts Society. The third day will feature ‘Uzlah’ (‘Isolation’), penned by Hamad Abdullah Mohammed Al Dhanhani and directed by Ibrahim Mohammed Al Qahoumi, performed by the Dibba Society for Culture Arts and Theatre. On the fourth day, audiences can look forward to ‘Hal Arak’ (‘Do I See You?’) with a script by Ahmed Hassan Abdullah Al Majid and direction by Samir Mohammed Al Balushi, performed by the Khorfakkan Arts Theatre. The fifth day will showcase ‘Illah Bila Dawa’ (‘A Sickness Without a Cure’), written and directed by Zainab Al Mulla, performed by Rubu’ Qarn for Theatre and Performing Arts. The Dubai National Theatre group will present ‘Jiran Al Qamar’ (‘Neighbours of the Moon’), a play created and directed by Abdullah Khalid Al Muhairi. The festival will culminate with ‘Sinariist’ (‘Screenwriter’), performed by the Al Ahli Dubai Theatre, written by Samer Mohammed Ismail and directed by Radwan Ali Al Nouri, followed by an awards ceremony.

Fatma Al Jallaf, Acting Director of Performing Arts at Dubai Culture, highlighted the festival’s role in revitalizing the Emirati theatre scene with new talent that enriches Dubai’s artistic landscape. She stated, “This year marks the 15th anniversary of the festival, which has transformed into an annual gathering for many emerging and established theatrical talents to engage in dialogue with one another on artistic experiences and insights. Over the years, the festival has successfully made a qualitative leap in the performing arts, enhancing the stature of theatre in Dubai and the UAE, while discovering countless talented creatives and developing their skills. The Authority aims to create an artistic and creative environment capable of nurturing young talent, and encouraging them to refine their skills and pursue their passion for the arts. This aligns with Dubai Culture’s responsibilities and sectoral priorities to establish Dubai as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent.”

Al Jallaf also explained that the selection process for the performances adhered to a comprehensive set of aesthetic, intellectual, and ethical criteria defined by the festival’s organizing committee, chaired by Marai AlHalyan, with members Abdullah Masoud and Ali Jamal. The committee ensured that the performances exhibited cohesion in form and interconnection in terms of concept, execution, direction, and teamwork, while showcasing originality and addressing community and youth issues through innovative direction and scenography.

During the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a series of practical seminars led by a distinguished group of researchers, artists, and theatre practitioners. The Sustainable City – Dubai has taken a significant step towards promoting environmental awareness and community engagement by unveiling a communal art mural made entirely from recycled plastic. This initiative, in celebration of Plastic Free July, was a collaborative effort involving residents and students from Fairgreen International School and Sanad Village. The mural, now proudly displayed on a central community wall in The Sustainable City Plaza, stands as a symbol of creativity, community spirit, and the ongoing battle against plastic pollution.

The creation of the mural was more than just an art project; it was a communal, inclusive activity that brought together diverse groups within the community to foster creativity and promote sustainability. The recycled plastic used for the mural was collected by Tadweer Waste Management, demonstrating the practical application of recycling efforts in an artistic and meaningful way.

The Sustainable City is committed to fostering an educational culture that empowers residents and visitors to engage deeply with environmental issues. Since 2019, the Plaza shops have successfully adopted a single-use plastic-free strategy, significantly reducing the community’s plastic footprint. This initiative aligns with Dubai’s broader environmental strategy, which includes a recently introduced city-wide ban on single-use bags. This ban encompasses plastic, paper, and biodegradable bags, with plans to gradually eliminate other single-use plastic items such as straws, cups, cutlery, and food containers by 2026.

Recycled plastic mural in Dubai's Sustainable City, created by residents and students for Plastic Free July, displayed on a community wall.

Beyond the mural, The Sustainable City has consistently championed the repurposing of materials. Playgrounds and the animal sanctuary within the community, for instance, have been constructed using repurposed construction waste. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to reduce waste, avoid single-use plastics, and encourage the recycling and reuse of materials.

The unveiling of the communal art mural serves as a powerful reminder of the collective efforts needed to combat plastic pollution. It stands as a testament to the creativity and community spirit of The Sustainable City’s residents and serves as an educational tool to inspire others to think creatively about sustainability.

As Plastic Free July continues, The Sustainable City invites everyone to visit the mural and participate in the ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting a sustainable lifestyle. This project not only highlights the importance of environmental stewardship but also showcases the power of community collaboration in creating a greener, more sustainable future.

Brighton-based artist Bryony Devitt is shedding light on the pressing issues of the housing crisis and soaring living costs in the city through her unique creation: a portable doll’s house as part of the annual Artists Open House tradition.

Devitt’s miniature open house poignantly reflects the challenges faced by Brighton residents amidst record-high rental prices and escalating living expenses. With a keen eye for social commentary, she endeavours to capture the absurdity of the current renting crisis and its profound impact on the local community.

Speaking about her inspiration for the project, Devitt expressed her frustration with the exorbitant costs of living in Brighton, which have outpaced wage growth. She remarked, “Renting in Brighton has always been difficult, but with the cost of living rising, it has become ridiculous.” This sentiment echoes the sentiments of many residents grappling with the financial strain imposed by the housing market.

The Portable Open House serves as Devitt’s creative response to the prevailing housing crisis, offering a platform to engage with the community and foster dialogue about the pressing issue. Through her miniature artworks, she invites viewers to contemplate the broader implications of the housing crisis while celebrating the resilience of creativity in the face of adversity.

Devitt’s project has garnered attention as a cathartic outlet for both the artist and her audience, offering a form of escapism amidst the challenges of everyday life. By sparking conversations and encouraging participation, the Portable Open House becomes more than just an art installation—it catalyses social change and collective action.

Featuring miniature artworks contributed by Brighton, Sussex artists and beyond, the portable open house exemplifies the diverse talents and perspectives within the artistic community. As part of this year’s Artist’s Open House programme, the exhibition embarks on a city-wide tour, engaging audiences and prompting reflection on the housing crisis from different viewpoints.

In a time marked by uncertainty and upheaval, Bryony Devitt’s miniature open house serves as a beacon of creativity and resilience, inviting viewers to confront pressing societal issues through the lens of art. As the exhibition traverses the city, it not only showcases the power of artistic expression but also underscores the vital role of artists in advocating for social change and fostering community solidarity.

In the miniature world of Bryony Devitt’s Portable Open House, the housing crisis looms large. However, amidst the intricately crafted artworks, there is hope for a brighter future—one where creativity thrives, and conversations spark meaningful change.

In a celebration of culture, community, and artistic expression, the renowned Saudi artist Manal AlDowayan brings her compelling narratives to life through two distinctive exhibitions in the enchanting landscape of AlUla’s Wadi AlFann, the Valley of the Arts.

Titled “Oasis of Stories” and “Their Love Is Like All Loves, Their Death Is Like All Deaths,” these exhibitions mark a significant moment in the burgeoning art scene of Saudi Arabia, reflecting not only AlDowayan’s artistic prowess but also the rich tapestry of narratives woven by the people of AlUla.

The first exhibition, “Oasis of Stories,” currently on display in the AlJadidah Arts District as part of the AlUla Arts Festival 2024 until March 23, serves as a homage to the vibrant heritage and daily lives of AlUla’s residents. AlDowayan’s meticulous drawings, born from workshops attended by 700 participants from diverse walks of life, encapsulate the essence of the region’s cultural metamorphosis and collective identity. Through these intimate renderings, AlDowayan offers a glimpse into the realities, dreams, and aspirations of the local community, ensuring their narratives endure as a part of AlUla’s artistic legacy.

Moreover, “Oasis of Stories” foreshadows AlDowayan’s ambitious desert installation, slated for completion in 2026, wherein the tales and drawings of AlUla’s inhabitants will be immortalized within the labyrinthine walls of the Old Town, bridging the past with the present in a monumental testament to cultural continuity.

Speaking about her immersive experience within the community, Manal AlDowayan expressed her commitment to fostering a space for the contemporary inhabitants of AlUla to share their stories, emphasizing the importance of preserving these narratives for future generations.

Wadi AlFann’s lead curator, Iwona Blazwick, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of integrating modern artistic expressions into AlUla’s timeless desert landscape. Blazwick emphasized the valley’s rich history, spanning millennia of human presence evidenced by intricate rock art and petroglyphs while envisioning a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation in the forthcoming artistic commissions.

In parallel, AlDowayan’s second exhibition, “Their Love Is Like All Loves, Their Death Is Like All Deaths,” presented in collaboration with the Sabrina Amrani Gallery, explores themes of ruin and heritage inspired by the ancient tombs of AlUla. Through sculptural works, drawings, and intricately woven Sadu textiles, AlDowayan invites viewers on a contemplative journey through time, where echoes of the past intertwine with the present.

With a keen focus on community engagement and inclusivity, AlDowayan’s exhibitions serve as catalysts for cultural dialogue and artistic expression, embodying Saudi Arabia’s transformative moment in the realm of public art. As the Kingdom embraces a vision where art becomes ingrained in its communities, AlDowayan’s visionary approach sets a precedent for a vibrant and inclusive cultural landscape, where every voice finds resonance and every story is cherished.

Murals have a rich history, dating back to ancient civilizations, where they were used to narrate stories and depict cultural narratives. From the cave paintings of Lascaux to the political murals of Northern Ireland, this art form has evolved to become a powerful means of communication and expression.

Community Connection:

Murals often serve as a communal canvas, transforming public spaces into dynamic galleries. Artists engage with local communities to capture the essence of a neighborhood, reflecting its diversity, history, and collective identity.

Social Commentary:

Many murals serve as visual critiques, addressing social, political, and environmental issues. Street artists worldwide utilize this medium to spark conversations and challenge societal norms, creating a powerful dialogue between the artwork and the viewer.

Technological Innovations:

With advancements in technology, muralists are incorporating new techniques and materials into their work. From augmented reality elements to interactive murals, artists are pushing boundaries and embracing innovation, adding an immersive dimension to their creations.

Global Collaboration:

Murals often transcend geographical boundaries, with artists collaborating across borders to create large-scale, impactful works of art. This global exchange of ideas and styles enriches the mural art scene, fostering a sense of interconnectedness within the artistic community.

Environmental Impact:

Some muralists are championing eco-friendly practices by using sustainable materials and techniques. Additionally, they often engage with environmental themes, drawing attention to ecological challenges and the importance of conservation.

Urban Regeneration:

Murals play a crucial role in urban revitalization efforts. Cities worldwide are commissioning artists to transform neglected spaces into vibrant cultural hubs, attracting tourists and fostering a sense of pride within local communities.

Celebrating Diversity:

Murals celebrate cultural diversity by incorporating elements from different traditions, folklore, and histories. Artists use this medium to amplify underrepresented voices, creating a visual tapestry that reflects the multiplicity of human experience.

Temporary vs. Permanent:

While some are intended to be permanent fixtures in urban landscapes, others embrace the impermanence of street art. Festivals and events often feature temporary murals, highlighting the transient nature of this evolving art form.

Economic Impact:

Beyond their cultural significance, murals can contribute to local economies by attracting tourism and promoting businesses in the surrounding areas. Cities recognize the economic benefits of a vibrant mural scene and actively support public art initiatives.
