Luis Barragán’s iconic La Cuadra San Cristóbal, known for its vibrant pink stucco walls and sprawling geometric planes, is set to reopen in Fall 2025 as a dynamic cultural hub in Mexico City. This historic 6.7-acre estate, designed by Barragán in the 1960s, has long been celebrated for its innovative architectural approach that blends modernist principles with Mexican artistic traditions. Now, under the stewardship of Fundación Fernando Romero, the site will transform into a publicly accessible center dedicated to Barragán’s legacy while embracing contemporary art, design, and creative discourse.

A Vision for the Future: Kengo Kuma and Marina Abramović Join the Project

As part of this ambitious transformation, the estate will feature new pavilions designed by acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, whose work is known for its harmonious integration of nature and architecture. These additions aim to complement Barragán’s signature use of light, color, and spatial harmony, ensuring that the site remains a beacon of architectural excellence.

Adding to the excitement, the legendary performance artist Marina Abramović will present a site-specific intervention ahead of the grand reopening. This new work is expected to push the boundaries of performance art, aligning with Barragán’s own philosophical exploration of space, silence, and emotional impact in architecture.

A Space for Creativity, Engagement, and Architectural Innovation

The reimagined Cuadra San Cristóbal will house a range of facilities aimed at fostering cultural dialogue and artistic exploration, including:

  • Galleries showcasing Barragán’s work and contemporary exhibitions
  • A podcast studio and library dedicated to architectural and artistic research
  • Event spaces for discussions, workshops, and performances

The foundation envisions the estate as a living archive of Barragán’s contributions, ensuring that his influence on global architecture continues to inspire new generations of designers, artists, and scholars.

Barragán’s Enduring Legacy in Mexico City

Beyond Cuadra San Cristóbal, Barragán’s Mexico City home, now a public museum, remains one of the most significant architectural landmarks in Latin America. Recognized as the only individual building in the region to be added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List, it attracts a growing audience of design enthusiasts and cultural tourists.

Barragán’s expressive use of color, water elements, and natural materials distinguished his approach from the stark minimalism of Western modernism, cementing his role in shaping a uniquely Mexican Modernist aesthetic. His upcoming cultural center at Cuadra San Cristóbal will further elevate his legacy, ensuring that his visionary work continues to inspire innovation.

Abu Dhabi’s highly anticipated Saadiyat Cultural District, scheduled to open in 2025, promises to become a premier cultural destination, featuring the Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim, the city’s Natural History Museum, and a teamLab outpost. Manuel Rabate, Director of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, recently discussed the district’s ambitious vision, highlighting its goal of offering an unparalleled cultural experience by housing world-class institutions within a single location.

Rabate praised the project’s aim to bring together a diverse range of cultural and educational institutions under one roof, calling it a “remarkable commitment” to fostering curiosity, creativity, and intellectual growth. He noted that this initiative reflects a deep belief in the importance of knowledge, connection, and openness. “What Abu Dhabi is doing in Saadiyat is gathering all sources of curiosity, creativity, inspiration, and education. It’s an incredibly bold, I would say, commitment and belief in the importance of knowledge, of connection, of openness,” Rabate stated.

He further elaborated that the concept has been evolving for several years, involving extensive planning and collaboration to create a cohesive narrative for Abu Dhabi.

“The idea to bring world-class museums has been communicated for a while. What we see now is the critical moment where the plan is becoming a reality,” Rabate explained.

The Saadiyat Cultural District’s institutions will not only share physical proximity but also collaborate on various levels to enhance the visitor experience. According to Rabate, this collaboration will create a seamless flow between institutions. “For the visitor experience, it is extremely pleasant to be able to move from one to the other, going to Zayed National Museum in the morning, an exhibition at Guggenheim, then having dinner at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and maybe catching a late show at Berklee,” he said. Each institution will contribute its unique mandate and narrative, enriching the overall cultural landscape.

With its focus on art, history, and technology, the Saadiyat Cultural District aims to position itself as a unique global platform. It will celebrate Abu Dhabi’s rich traditions while embracing modern advancements, making it a vibrant cultural hub that reflects both the city’s heritage and its forward-looking vision.

Now open to the public, this exciting expansion marks a significant milestone in Cinema Akil’s mission to bring exceptional cinematic and cultural experiences to audiences in the heart of Dubai and the region.

A multipurpose pavilion

Located within the vibrant 25hours Hotel Dubai One Central, CA in 25hours, spanning across an impressive 1,867.5 square feet, it offers a multi-faceted space divided into three distinct sections: the box office/concession area, the open cinema theatre, and a multipurpose retail and pop-up space. Beyond screening films, CA in 25hours promises an electric array of entertainment options, including an F&B offering, music events, talks, and pop-up experiences. Designed for film screenings and a multitude of other activities, CA in 25hours boasts a theatre with a seating capacity of 72 people and a total standing capacity of approximately 150 guests across all three zones, creating an intimate yet vibrant atmosphere for cinema enthusiasts and creatives alike. With versatility in mind, CA in 25hours offers a unique space to accommodate takeovers, venue rentals, and collaborations. It presents a flexible environment that can seamlessly adapt to different needs, fostering a creative atmosphere for a variety of purposes.

Entirely complimentary with a prior booking, CA in 25hours will host screenings four times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with films typically commencing between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM. Each season, with the first taking place from November 2023 to May 2024, will bring a fresh, diverse, and carefully curated program each month. The entire venue will be open daily from 12 PM until 10 PM allowing guests to experience the versatility of the space through installations, social interaction, and retail while enjoying a curated F&B menu.

A design that blends culture and modernity

CA in 25hours boasts impressive high ceilings, creating a spacious and inviting atmosphere. This open atrium is easily accessible from both One Central and the hotel drop-off area, fostering a sense of connectivity. Positioned between the multi-purpose area and the box office, the central theatre space forms the very heart of CA in 25hours, facilitating a seamless flow throughout the space. Designed by architect Joud Malhas, the standout feature is the venue’s striking red scaffolding, evoking the ambiance of a bustling back alley—an homage to Dubai’s perpetual state of construction and a nod to Cinema Akil’s flagship color. With adaptability, collaboration, and a nod to regional creativity in mind, CA in 25hours offers versatile seating options, including seats designed by Bethlehem-based Local Industries, co-founded by designers Elias and Yousef Anastas, and conversation benches by Beirut-based Post Industrial Crafts. Bookshelves, adorning the outer sections of the space, display objects curated by Mumbai-based Jetsons Designs, seamlessly blending heritage with modernity. Adding a touch of nature to the environment, the space features plants and trees. In line with Cinema Akil’s insistence on regional collaboration and creation, this versatile design mirrors the brand’s ethos, allowing it to harmonize effortlessly with its surroundings and become an integral part of the experience.

Technology that enhances the experience

CA in 25hours boasts cutting-edge technology, featuring state-of-the-art laser projection and Dolby 7.1 cinema sound, making the theatre compatible with industry-standard video and audio formats. Based on its unique location in the atrium, which is a quite cavernous space, the cinema’s acoustic design and engineering, completed by Acoustics Studio 21dB, have been laid out to protect the integrity of cinematic experience while keeping it accessible, public, and outdoor.

Beyond its technical prowess, the ambiance of CA in 25hours is a key highlight. The space is not brightly lit, setting the mood for an intimate and immersive journey. The space presents two distinct moods: one resembling a public installation mimicking a garden during the day, serving as a corridor to connect One Central to the hotel; the other transforms into a back alley at night, adorned with exclusive red lights and Cinema Akil’s iconic chandeliers. The lighting design focuses on an easy transition to a screening experience that ensures guests enjoy a seamless journey from the moment they enter the venue until they settle into watching a film.

Sotheby’s, the renowned auction house, has struck a deal to purchase the iconic Breuer Building from the Whitney Museum of American Art for an estimated price of over $100 million. The agreement between the two institutions marks a significant shift in the art world landscape, as announced today.

The Breuer Building, designed by Modernist master Marcel Breuer and completed in 1966, has been a prominent landmark and the former home of the Whitney Museum until its relocation to the Meatpacking District in 2015. Since then, the building has been occupied by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is currently leased to the Frick Collection until August 2024. Sotheby’s plans to move its galleries and auction room to the Breuer Building in 2025, creating a new flagship space that will feature state-of-the-art exhibition and auction facilities. The galleries will be accessible to the public free of charge, according to Sotheby’s.

The auction house will assume ownership of the Breuer building in September 2024 and intends to engage an architect to carefully review the internal spaces while preserving key elements, including the striking lobby, according to a press release.

Charles Stewart, CEO of Sotheby’s, expressed his excitement about the acquisition, stating, “We are honored to acquire and write the next chapter of such an iconic and well-known New York architectural landmark. The Breuer has an extraordinary history, having housed the Whitney, Metropolitan, and Frick collections. This acquisition will further distinguish us as we continue to transform and innovate for our clients.”

Adam Weinberg, director of the Whitney Museum, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, noting that the Breuer Building would continue to serve as a cultural and artistic hub for the display of artworks and artifacts. He emphasized the importance of preserving this architectural masterpiece, particularly due to its status within a landmark district.

Rumors about the future of the Breuer Building have circulated within the art world for the past two years, with Sotheby’s interest in the landmark gaining significant attention in recent months. The acquisition of the Breuer building aligns with Sotheby’s strategy to expand its global presence. In 2024, the auction house plans to open new flagship galleries in Hong Kong and Paris, while this year will see the unveiling of Gantry Point, a state-of-the-art facility in Long Island City dedicated to enhancing the handling of artworks.

Sotheby’s will continue to retain ownership of its current global headquarters at 1334 York Avenue until the opening of its new galleries in the Breuer Building in 2025, according to the company’s statement. This landmark deal further solidifies Sotheby’s position as a leader in the art market, poised for continued growth and innovation.
