LEGO collaborates with the Van Gogh Museum to recreate the iconic ‘Sunflowers’ painting in a stunning 3D brick format.

Bringing Van Gogh’s Vision to LEGO

LEGO has unveiled its latest artistic creation, the LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set, developed in partnership with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. This 2,615-piece collector’s item transforms Van Gogh’s 1889 masterpiece into a three-dimensional LEGO format, offering art enthusiasts and builders an immersive experience.

The set includes:

  • Adjustable petals to recreate Van Gogh’s signature brushstrokes.
  • A removable frame for display versatility.
  • A tile featuring Van Gogh’s signature, adding an authentic touch.

Designed to capture the painting’s three radiant shades of yellow and dynamic light and shadow effects, this release pays homage to one of the world’s most famous still-life artworks.

An Interactive Experience for Collectors

To enhance the building process, LEGO has introduced an exclusive podcast, available from March 1, 2025, featuring insights from LEGO Designer Stijn Oom and Van Gogh Museum Senior Curator Nienke Bakker. The podcast will provide historical context and behind-the-scenes details on the creation of this set.

In celebration of the launch, LEGO has also crafted two life-sized brick-built replicas of Sunflowers, which will be permanently displayed at the LEGO Store in Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum. Additionally, fans will have the opportunity to meet Stijn Oom, who will be signing sets at:

  • LEGO Store Amsterdam – March 1, 2025
  • LEGO Store Marseille – March 2, 2025

Pre-Orders and Pricing Details

The LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is available for pre-order from January 28, 2025, ahead of its official launch on March 1, 2025. The set is priced at $199.99 USD, making it a must-have for LEGO collectors and art lovers alike. The set also includes intricate texturing techniques to mimic Van Gogh’s expressive brushwork, offering builders a deeper connection to the masterpiece.

Climate protestors were detained in London after dumping soup on Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “Sunflowers.” The demonstrators caused “minimal damage to the frame, but the picture is unscathed,” according to the gallery.

The protest organization “Just Stop Oil” has conducted a series of high-profile actions in order to halt UK government authorisation for exploring, developing, and producing fossil fuels. The Metropolitan Police (Met) claimed two protesters from the organization were detained for criminal damage and aggravated trespass after they “threw a substance over a picture” at the Trafalgar Square gallery and attached themselves to a wall just after 11 a.m. (10 a.m. GMT).

Police stated they had unglued the demonstrators and transported them to a police station in central London. The two demonstrators “appeared to adhere themselves to the wall close to Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers,'” according to the National Gallery, and hurled a “red substance” at the artwork. The room was emptied of people, and police were contacted, according to the report.

A video uploaded on Twitter by the Guardian’s environment journalist Damien Gayle and reposted by the eco-activist organization shows two ladies wearing T-shirts with the phrase “Just Stop Oil” throwing soup cans at the famed mural. After affixing themselves to the wall, one of the activists exclaims, “What is more valuable, art or life?” “Are you more worried about protecting an artwork or protecting our earth and people?” she inquires.

Someone can be heard exclaiming “oh my God!” when the soup strikes the canvas, and another person screams “Security!” as soup falls from the frame onto the floor in the video.

According to a statement from Just Stop Oil, its activists tossed two cans of Heinz Tomato soup over the artwork to demand that the UK government cancel all new oil and gas projects. The protest’s message, it subsequently tweeted, was “Choose life above art.”

“Human innovation and intelligence are on display in this gallery,” the group claimed, “but our heritage is being destroyed by our government’s inability to act on the climate and cost of living crises.”

According to the advocacy organization, the artwork is worth $84.2 million. According to the National Institution’s website, the signed picture from 1888 was purchased by the gallery in 1924. Van Gogh painted seven versions of “Sunflowers,” five of which are on exhibit in museums and galleries across the world.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, for example, said it was keeping a “close eye on developments” that may influence its own security procedures. The incident was criticized by well-known Dutch “art detective” Arthur Brand, called the “Indiana Jones of the Art World” for rescuing important artworks. “There are hundreds of methods to draw attention to climate issues. This should not be among them “He stated. The incident comes a week after British Home Secretary Suella Braverman threatened direct-action climate protestors, accusing them of deploying “guerrilla methods” to cause “chaos and suffering” in the public sphere.

David A Lindon has recreated Munch’s The Scream, Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, Monet’s Water Lily, Banksy’s Girl With Balloon, and van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Sunflowers. The artist’s tiny versions of six famous works of art have sold for more than £90,000.

His versions are small enough to fit into the eye of a needle. The Bournemouth sculptor, who began his hobby in 2018, called it a “life-changing amount”. They have all been sold to private collectors for £15,000 each, prior to his first exhibition.

Mr Lindon only recently turned professional having previously worked in engineering. He was first inspired by watching a TV programme about micro artist Willard Wigan, whose work he found “astonishing”. Shortly after he “woke up in the middle of the night” newly determined to join the profession himself.

In response, Mr Wigan has called Mr Lindon’s work “very good”. He added: “The best micro artists in the world are from the UK. You have me, Graham Short, and David A Lindon.”

Mr Lindon worked hard to perfect his new skill, and his interpretations of famous musicians, including Freddie Mercury and Amy Winehouse, soon began attracting attention. “It seemed a natural progression to explore paintings and to discover just how small I can go,” he said.

“Whilst creating a micro painting uses the same process as doing a full size art piece, there is a greater focus on transposing the aesthetic qualities of the original whilst representing them on a much smaller scale.”

Mr Lindon works in an “almost emotionless trance” during the night to avoid distractions and unwanted noise, and spends more than a month on each 0.5mm-wide [0.02in] plastic piece.

But he professes to not enjoy agonising over the intricate artworks, which he describes as a “physical challenge and a mental battle”.

“I have to slow my heartbeat down essentially,” he explained, adding: “I control my nerves, I steady myself. I get lost in my own world, I really do.”

He added: “The only thing I enjoy is when it’s done. That relief, and then to see the expressions of joy and surprise on people’s faces, is fantastic.”

The six masterpieces and a further six pieces of art can been seen at A New Beginning, an exhibition at the Lighthouse Media Centre in Wolverhampton, until 29 October.

One of the largest digital art centres in the GCC, set inside The Dubai Mall, opened to the public. Infinity des Lumieres will host immersive art exhibitions and hopes to become a platform where tech-driven artists can create, innovate and present their works, its director said.

The venue is spread over 2700 square meters and has more than 130 projectors, 58 speakers and 3,000 HD digital images working together to create moving artworks.

The art space is currently holding three exhibition. The first is a light, sound and visual presentation of Van Gogh’s works, including The Potato Eaters (1885), Sunflowers (1888) and Starry Night (1889).

Accompanying the presentation is a production by Danny Rose Studio, which pays homage to the widespread influence of Japanese art, culture and tradition on famous artists such as Van Gogh. Dreamed Japan, Images of the Floating World will take visitors into 19th century Japan, blending artist Katsushika Hokusai’s portraits with landscapes and images of his famous waves.

Created specifically for immersive art spaces, Verse by Thomas Vanz concludes the show. The exhibition is a hypnotic, metaphysical journey, with whirling images of the cosmos accompanied by an orchestral piece composed with Jonathan Fitas.

The centre also houses a boutique where art lovers can buy collections from artists from the region and beyond. In May, Infinity des Lumieres announced a partnership with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority “to strengthen the emirate’s position as a city of the future through a unique digital art experience”.

“Dubai is the perfect home for the art centre,” said Catherine Oriol, director of Infinity des Lumieres. “Along with the authority’s support, we aim to create the ultimate platform for art to merge with diverse industries through unique symposia, partnering with visionary institutions, thinkers, industry leaders, innovators, and emerging local, regional and international artists.”

Tickets to Infinity des Lumieres start at Dh75 for children up to aged 13 and Dh125 for visitors over 14 years. Shows run daily, with the first starting at 10am.
