Dubai Design Week (DDW) celebrated its tenth anniversary in style, showcasing a dynamic fusion of contemporary creativity and cultural heritage across the city. Held at the Dubai Design District (d3) from November 6-9, 2024, the event brought together over 500 designers, brands, and creatives from more than 40 countries, making it one of the region’s largest and most anticipated design gatherings. The event celebrated the rapidly growing design industry in the UAE and emphasized the importance of integrating both modern design practices and regional traditions.

Highlights of DDW 2024

A standout installation was “Present Absent Mudhif” by Iraqi designer Ola Zaad Znad. Featured in the Abwab section, an annual commission dedicated to showcasing emerging designers from Southwest Asia and North Africa, Znad’s structure paid homage to the Marsh Arabs’ architectural heritage. Using reeds and mud, traditional materials sourced from the Iraqi marshlands, Znad’s work highlighted regenerative building techniques rooted in Sumerian practices. The structure’s contrast to Dubai’s gleaming skyscrapers invited visitors to pause and reflect on the cultural continuity and heritage of the region.

The event also included the much-anticipated Downtown Design fair, which marked its 11th edition this year. Held at the d3 Waterfront Terrace from November 6-9, the fair hosted an expanded roster of top international designers and design brands. Featured brands included Italian luxury furniture maker Poltrona Frau, presenting its elegant Imagine Collection, and Kuwaiti studio Babnimim Design, which unveiled The Moon Gate, an installation of circular portals made from Cosentino’s sustainable materials Dekton and Silestone. These showcased the event’s emphasis on innovation in both materials and design practices.

Another key feature was Hands on Design from Milan, which exhibited a stunning collection of carpets designed by artist Nika Zupanc. The carpets, each with intricate patterns and vibrant colours, explored the theme of life’s winding journey, offering a sense of grounding and mysticism to the fair’s visitors.

Dubai Editions: Affordable Collectible Art and Design

A major highlight this year was the launch of Dubai Editions, a new section dedicated to affordable collectible art, design objects, and prints. More than 50 galleries and design studios participated, offering a diverse range of works that were accessible to both collectors and casual art enthusiasts. Iwan Maktabi showcased a collaboration with Emirati artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, presenting carpets inspired by Ibrahim’s minimalist designs, while Leila Heller Gallery featured works by Iranian-Dubai based artist Roham Shamekh, whose Scavenger Chair and explosive resin sculptures captivated viewers.

This year’s Dubai Editions reflected Dubai’s growing influence as a cultural hub for both emerging and established artists. With a strong local presence, over 50% of exhibitors hailed from Dubai itself, further cementing the city’s place as a global capital for creativity in art and design.

Veuve Clicquot Sun Club Lounge

For those looking for a moment of relaxation amidst the whirlwind of design, the Veuve Clicquot Sun Club Lounge, designed by French studio Marcel Poulain, offered a Mediterranean escape under the Dubai sun. With its signature yellow design and bespoke furniture, the lounge provided a perfect setting for professionals and art lovers to unwind while enjoying the iconic champagne brand’s luxurious atmosphere.

The Evolving Design Landscape of Dubai

The successful execution of Dubai Design Week 2024 is a testament to the city’s transformation into a global design capital. As the city welcomes new residents and fosters a flourishing arts and culture scene, events like DDW continue to push boundaries, creating new platforms for emerging talents while embracing the region’s rich heritage.

As the Middle East’s largest design festival, Dubai Design Week not only showcases the latest in international design trends but also places a special focus on the unique design narratives emerging from the Arab world, North Africa, and South Asia. With its diverse exhibitions, installations, and presentations, DDW reinforces Dubai’s growing role in the global creative economy.

As the surge of AI-generated art grows, the appeal for genuine, human-crafted creativity has never been more relevant. Amid the digital deluge, there’s a desire to rediscover individuality and authenticity in art. Reflecting this need, a new art and design fair titled “Editions” debuted during Dubai Design Week from November 6–9 at the Dubai Design District (d3) Waterfront Terrace. This fair redefines art collection as accessible, engaging, and geared toward a new generation of art enthusiasts.

Aimed at broadening access to limited-edition art, Editions offers a novel approach for younger collectors seeking personalized connections through art. Unlike traditional fairs focused on rare and high-priced pieces, this initiative makes art acquisition feel practical, approachable, and uniquely modern. Over 50 galleries, studios, and collectives are participating, displaying art ranging from prints, ceramics, and contemporary designs to paper-based works.

Highlighting Accessibility in Art

Pablo del Val, the visionary behind Editions and Art Dubai’s artistic director, emphasized how this new platform breaks traditional barriers in art. “Cities grow and mature, and as that happens, people’s needs evolve,” del Val remarked. His mission is to democratize limited-edition art and make it available to everyone, regardless of financial standing.

The fair’s format opens doors for novice collectors to immerse themselves in an approachable environment, fostering a new wave of art enthusiasts. Del Val elaborated, “With the introduction of the golden visa, a new wave of expats, and the younger generation moving from teens to young professionals, we saw an opportunity to make art more accessible—a way for newcomers to feel comfortable without feeling overwhelmed or intimidated.”

A New Way to Explore Art

The fair itself is designed to be inviting, akin to a “candy shop” experience for art lovers. Displays encourage visitors to wander, ask questions, and engage with the art in a relaxed setting. Del Val explained that this environment breaks down the intimidation factor often associated with art collecting: “It’s set up to be approachable for those who haven’t collected art before.”

Editions also prioritizes affordability, intentionally reducing entry costs to attract younger audiences. “Often people assume the price range is so high that they don’t bother asking,” said del Val, emphasizing the fair’s commitment to dispelling that myth and opening the art world to broader demographics.

A Return to Tangible Experiences

As Gen-Z continues to seek out meaningful, hands-on experiences in a tech-dominated era, Editions offers a timely alternative to the mass-produced digital content dominating social platforms. Del Val reflected on this dynamic, stating, “AI, while powerful, still needs a human touch, an artistic mind behind it. Art is an experience, a sensory interaction and AI cannot replicate that.”

The fair provides a space to reconnect with the tangible and the unique. Del Val noted that despite the prevalence of virtual experiences, physical interactions remain essential: “There’s a return to hands-on, material-focused work and a pushback against the purely digital pieces.”

Inspiring Emerging and Established Talent

Beyond expanding accessibility, Editions creates a platform for emerging artists to showcase their work alongside established creators. Del Val highlighted the importance of this blend: “We hope to nurture future collectors in Dubai, and making this world more accessible for them is the first step.” The mix of fresh and experienced talent reflects the fair’s intention to create a vibrant space for diverse perspectives and craftsmanship.

By bridging gaps in art appreciation and demystifying collection, Editions offers a distinct space where art becomes a personal journey. It aims to empower visitors—whether seasoned collectors or first-timers—to engage with art meaningfully and to make it their own.

A Unique Opportunity for Collectors

Editions marks the first event of its kind in the region, providing art enthusiasts the rare chance to explore and acquire high-quality, limited edition pieces. Exhibitors from the UAE, Lebanon, Kuwait, Jordan, and a robust international representation from countries such as Germany, Colombia, Italy, Lithuania, and France will participate, appealing to seasoned collectors and newcomers alike.

This fair aims to connect the esteemed realms of Art Dubai and Downtown Design, two of the city’s most prominent cultural highlights, showcasing works that embody the pinnacle of creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation. Attendees can expect a diverse range of mediums and artistic practices, including ceramics, custom sculptures, limited edition prints, and photography.

Insight from Industry Leaders

Mette Degn-Christensen, Director of Downtown Design, shared insights on the burgeoning demand for unique, limited edition pieces in the region. “As art and design continue to grow within Dubai’s cultural landscape, Editions offers a new platform where visitors can connect with independent designers and discover works that are otherwise inaccessible in the Middle East,” she stated.

Khadija Al Bastaki, Senior Vice President of Dubai Design District (d3), highlighted the alignment of Editions with Dubai’s overarching creative economy goals. “Dubai’s maturing art scene is opening up to the public more than ever before. This fair allows individuals to be more active patrons and offers emerging talents a credible platform to expand their reach,” she noted.

Noteworthy Exhibitions and Collections

A standout feature of the fair will be the Contemporary Design section, which will showcase works that seamlessly blend form, function, and superior craftsmanship. Celebrated Emirati designer Aljoud Lootah is set to unveil new creations in celebration of her studio’s tenth anniversary. Other remarkable exhibits will include Atelier Alain Ellouz’s alabaster lighting designs and minimalist industrial furniture pieces from Blooker Gallery.

The Ceramics collection promises to display artists who are redefining the boundaries of stoneware and porcelain. SANATORIUM will present Çağla Köseoğulları’s innovative folding clay series, while Hestia Gallery will introduce Roxane Lahidji, who crafts luxurious objects from sustainable materials, including salt.

In the realm of Works on Paper, galleries like Comptoir Des Mines Galerie and Rarares Gallery will feature a variety of techniques ranging from watercolor to collage, highlighting the intersection of human experience and nature. Limited edition screenprints by Iraqi artist Dia Azzawi and vibrant resin works by British artist Nat Bowen will also be featured prominently.

Photography and Engaging Discussions

Photography aficionados can anticipate compelling exhibits from Gulf Photo Plus and Leila Heller Gallery, showcasing works that delve into cultural heritage and contemporary social landscapes. Highlights include Hussain AlMoosawi’s architectural portraits of the UAE and Shirin Neshat’s acclaimed Tooba series.

Alongside the art fair, Editions will present The Forum, a series of insightful talks led by industry leaders and experts who will explore trends, the value of editioned works, and the significance of art and design in shaping community identity. These discussions are crafted to educate and inspire both novice and seasoned collectors.

Tickets for the event are affordably priced at Dh50 for a single day and Dh80 for a three-day pass, which also includes access to Downtown Design. Editions aims to create an inclusive environment for art enthusiasts and collectors to discover and invest in unique artistic expressions.

Saporiti Italia is proud to announce the launch of its latest design event, the ‘Saporiti Design Experience’, during its participation at Dubai Design Week from November 7–12, 2023. The Saporiti Italia Group is an advanced and sophisticated Italian design solution company with a heritage that dates back to the 1950s. In collaboration with Dubai Design District (D3) and the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI), the ‘Saporiti Design Experience’ will provide an exclusive platform to a handful of DIDI Student Teams.

The teams will compete to create an ecologically sustainable and futuristic reinterpretation of the iconic ‘Miamina’ folding armchair. Crafted in 1983, the original Miamina was made as a recreation of the historical ‘Tripolina’ chair by the famous Milan architectural firm, Salvati & Tresoldi, for Saporiti Italia. The iconic and rare collector’s dream boasts an authentic Missoni design highlighting the amalgamation of two invaluable Italian design maestros. The heritage and research behind this craftsmanship, as well as the masterpiece itself the original ‘Miamina’ chair, will be showcased at Saporiti Italia’s display at Dubai Design Week.

Following the announcement and display of the upcoming competition. The next phase of the event will commence, wherein the selected students will begin creating their prototypes for the piece. Conclusively, the ‘winning’ design and its creator, decided by an international jury, will receive a sponsored trip to Italy, where their creation will be presented at Milan Design Week in April 2024.

“We at Saporiti Italia, are dedicated to exploring uncharted territories in the design world, and staying true to our brand where each piece tells a unique story. You can see that with our display of the iconic ‘Miamina’.  Nurturing the design community in the Middle East is essential to me, and our step into Dubai Design District is a testament to this. We believe by providing this opportunity to the students at Dubai Design Institute we will be contributing to the growth of the design industry.” Raffaele Saporiti.

The ‘Miamina’ display at the Dubai Institute of Design, during Dubai Design Week, will provide viewers an opportunity to witness the transformation of Saporiti Italia’s innovation in the design industry. With their office now open in Dubai Design District, Saporiti is set to take Dubai’s design scene to new heights.

Through the Tanween and the Critical Practice Programmes, Tashkeel has fostered and elevated the abilities and practise of designers and artists over the course of its 15 years since being founded in the UAE. By offering a cohort of carefully chosen professional designers a year of fully paid training, the Tanween Design Programme aims to foster the continual evolution of UAE design.

The Tanween Design Program will begin its tenth season in 2023. Wafa Al Falahi (UAE), Marwa Abdelrahim (Sudan), Maryam Elattar & Mohamed Elnaggar (Egypt), Tia Sinclair-Kemp & Chinara Tashmatova (USA/Kazakhstan), and 67 other design practitioners were chosen, according to Zawya. They will set out on solo trips to investigate the UAE’s cultural landscape over the coming months, and when paired with their interdisciplinary backgrounds, they will produce luxurious, sustainable, and functional designs.

Since 2011, Tashkeel has provided funding for 40 designers to enroll in professional development courses. This has resulted in the creation of over 45 prototypes and more than 30 furniture and lighting pieces that are inspired by, created in, and manufactured in the United Arab Emirates and debuted at Dubai Design Week. Visitors to the previous Downtown Design in November 2022 expressed their admiration for the departing Tanween cohort in large numbers. The eighth year of Tashkeel’s Critical Practice Programme welcomes Maitha Hamdan, Ji-Hye Kim, Mouza Al Hamrani, and Rand Abdul Jabbar (Iraq/Canada).

In order to identify new artists and provide them with ongoing studio support, training, critique, and production opportunities for up to a year in the UAE, the Critical Practice Programme (CPP) was launched in 2014. Out of a total of 44 applications from practitioners residing and working in the UAE, the CPP2023 cohort was carefully chosen. Each CPP2023 participant will participate in a 12-month programme in 2023 that will start with a series of studio visits, critiques, and workshops before they begin an experimental and research phase guided by Tashkeel personnel and their mentors.

In speaking about the expectations from this year’s cohorts and the growth of Tashkeel, Deputy Director, Lisa-Ball Lechgar said, “Tashkeel values its legacy of training and development over the last 15 years and shall continue its commitment moving forward. The alumni from our professional development programmes have become leaders in their fields and continue to contribute to the country’s creative and cultural industries as innovators and entrepreneurs..”

The Critical Practice Programme runs from January through December 2023, while the Tanween Design Programme runs from January through November 2023. As it celebrates its 15th anniversary throughout 2023, Tashkeel’s commitment to the industry includes supporting UAE-based design and visual art practitioners.
