Sotheby’s auction house recently made history by selling the first piece of artwork created by a humanoid robot using artificial intelligence (AI) for an impressive $1 million. The artwork, titled A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing (2024), far exceeded its estimated value of $120,000 to $180,000, fetching $1,084,800 at the auction.

The portrait, created by Ai-Da Robot, a humanoid robot artist, was inspired by mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing, known for his groundbreaking work in artificial intelligence. The 64-inch by 90-inch mixed-media piece on canvas attracted 27 bids during the Digital Art day sale on November 7. Ai-Da Robot employs a combination of cameras in its eyes, AI algorithms, and a robotic arm to create art.

“This auction marks a significant moment in the art world, where Ai-Da’s work brings attention to the societal and artistic transformations occurring as AI continues to evolve,” said Aidan Meller, the U.K.-based art dealer and creator of Ai-Da. “The A.I. God piece raises important questions about agency and power as AI technology continues to grow.”

Ai-Da Robot, named after Ada Lovelace, the pioneering computer programmer, has drawn attention for its unique ability to blend technology and creativity. The robot is often depicted with a black bob wig, dressed in a t-shirt and denim overalls.

Sotheby’s vice president and digital art expert Michael Bouhanna commented on the growing demand for AI-based art. “After engaging with key collectors at the intersection of art and technology, it was clear there was significant interest in Ai-Da’s A.I. God portrait,” Bouhanna said. “While there’s limited historical data to gauge the market for singular AI works, demand for this piece was undeniably strong.”

The artwork had previously been displayed at the AI for Good Global Summit held at the United Nations in Geneva in May 2024, where it was featured as part of a five-panel Polyptych.

The auction result for Ai-Da’s portrait made up a significant portion of Sotheby’s Digital Art day sale, which totaled $1,485,840. Other notable works included pieces by digital artists such as Refik Anadol, PAK, and Xcopy. However, the highest-estimated work, Xcopy’s DOOM Party, did not sell at the auction.

Saudi artist Obaid AlSafi has been named as a finalist for the prestigious Sigg Art Prize, curated by Saudi-based Pierre Sigg. The winner will be revealed on October 10 during a ceremony at London’s Asprey Studio. This year’s prize focuses on the theme “Future Desert,” encouraging artists to push the boundaries of creativity by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their works.

AlSafi, who initially pursued computer science, found his true calling in art and has since developed a unique style combining art, photography, and graphic design. His ability to blend digital knowledge with contemporary artistic practices has earned him recognition in the art world.

“As an artist who merges digital knowledge with contemporary art, I felt this prize was a perfect fit for my practice,” AlSafi said.

His submission for the prize explores the interplay between perception and reality, particularly in relation to the desert landscape, which holds deep personal significance for him as his birthplace.

“Often perceived as a barren void, the desert, my birthplace, conceals a spiritual richness that far exceeds its arid appearance,” AlSafi explained in an email. “By merging code and creativity, we aim to reveal the latent richness of this ancient landscape, inviting viewers to contemplate a profound question: Is emptiness merely a mirage, masking the boundless depths of existence waiting to be discovered?”

AlSafi acknowledged the challenges of using AI in art, noting that it forces a re-evaluation of creativity, authorship, and human experience. “It redefines our understanding of creativity, authorship, and the human experience. It paves the way for a new realm of artistic exploration, where traditional boundaries are fluid, and the concept of art is constantly evolving,” he added.

The Sigg Art Prize drew more than 300 applicants from 70 countries, with only seven making the shortlist. The winner will receive a cash prize of $10,968. AlSafi joins fellow finalists Dana-Fiona Armour, Léa Collet, Agnieszka Kurant (in collaboration with John Menick), Harrison Pearce, Aaron Scheer, and Sasha Stiles in the competition for the coveted award.

Léo Caillard, a rising star in the Parisian art scene, defies categorization. This contemporary artist, born in 1990, seamlessly blends the timeless elegance of marble sculptures with the cutting edge of digital creations. His unique approach has garnered him international recognition, captivating audiences with a dialogue between eras.

Caillard’s artistic practice revolves around the juxtaposition of classical and modern aesthetics. He breathes new life into ancient statuary by meticulously carving figures from pristine marble. These figures, reminiscent of Greek or Roman gods and goddesses, become the foundation for his digital interventions. Using advanced technology, Caillard overlays these classical forms with abstract digital elements, creating a dynamic interplay between the tangible and the virtual.

The resulting works are captivating and thought-provoking. The smooth, polished marble figures evoke a sense of history and permanence, while the digital elements introduce a layer of fluidity and dynamism. This marriage of past and present invites viewers to contemplate the evolution of art forms and the ever-increasing influence of technology in our world.

Caillard’s digital creations are not merely embellishments but integral to his sculptures. Often, they obscure or distort the classical figures, forcing viewers to engage with the work more interactively. By manipulating light, colour, and form, Léo Caillard creates a sense of mystery and intrigue, prompting viewers to question their perceptions and explore the deeper meanings embedded within the artwork.

Léo Caillard’s artistic journey is one of innovation and exploration. He carves a distinct niche in the contemporary art landscape by merging traditional sculpting techniques with cutting-edge digital tools. His sculptures transcend mere aesthetics, acting as bridges between the past and present, inviting viewers to ponder the ever-evolving relationship between human creativity and technology.

In a scathing critique of the burgeoning world of artificial intelligence-generated art, renowned Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei has asserted that art easily replicated by AI is “meaningless.” The provocative statement comes amidst a heated debate surrounding AIs utilizing scraped data from artists’ websites to produce images purportedly in the style of renowned creators.

Several class-action lawsuits in the United States have drawn attention, with artists discovering thousands of images created by AIs using their work without permission. Ai Weiwei dismissively commented, “That’s not a problem. I think that kind of art should [have died] a long time ago,” as he questioned the validity of art teaching centred on producing “realistic” images, considering AI’s ability to replicate them almost instantly.

The dissident artist went further, suggesting that even legendary figures like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse would have reconsidered their artistic approach if AI had been present in their era. Ai Weiwei contended, “It’d be just impossible for them to still think [the same way].”

Undeterred by the rise of artificial intelligence, Ai Weiwei announced his next project, a collaboration with an AI named “Ai vs AI.” The project involves both himself and the AI answering a set of 81 questions over 81 days. The questions, ranging from the endurance of love and hate to the guilt of Edward Snowden, will be projected on prominent screens worldwide, including Piccadilly Circus, and the answers will be subsequently posted online.

Describing the project as “a bit of fun,” Ai Weiwei likened it to throwing a pebble across a pond to observe the ripple effect. However, he cautioned about the potential dangers of an overly powerful and globally relied-upon artificial intelligence. Drawing parallels to historical events, he expressed concerns that an AI-dominated society might resemble the totalitarian ideologies of the Third Reich or the Cultural Revolution in China.

Ai Weiwei, born in Beijing in 1957, has been an outspoken critic of the Chinese authorities throughout his career. Raised in labour camps after his father’s exile, the dissident artist is no stranger to challenging the status quo. His recent involvement in a controversy over free speech and the Israel-Gaza conflict led to the indefinite postponement of his exhibition by the Lisson Gallery.

Reflecting on his role as an artist, Ai Weiwei emphasized the responsibility to ask difficult questions and challenge the powerful. Despite facing backlash for his outspoken views, he asserted, “My mission is about asking questions and not massaging the powerful, not to make them feel comfortable. I’m undertaking a dangerous mission, and so far, I’m still alive.”

As technology continues to reshape the landscape of artistic creation, Ai Weiwei’s critique serves as a thought-provoking contribution to the ongoing dialogue on the intersection of art and artificial intelligence.

Laura H. Rubin is an award-winning digital artist recognized for her talent in creating realistic portraits that encapsulate the strength and essence of female characters.

Laura’s contributions to art and literature have been significant through publishers in Paris, England, and Switzerland. Her artistic and educational books have enriched and inspired readers and art enthusiasts alike.

Laura’s work has been exhibited in various cities, including San Francisco, Munich, Zurich, Paris, Basel, and Milan.

In 2022, Laura’s work was selected for the Lunar Codex Project’s Polaris Collection. This contribution will be preserved in a lunar time capsule and left on the moon for future generations.

1) Your work seamlessly combines digital art with literature, creating a unique synergy. How did your journey in both fields influence each other, and what role does storytelling play in your artistic process?

I have always loved reading and discovered my passion for mythology about 10 years ago, which I then began integrating into my work. During a rather dark phase of my life, I developed an interest in poetry and psychology. These areas have enriched my work and helped me deal with my own emotions more effectively. Originally, storytelling wasn’t particularly important to me; I simply wanted to express my emotions and feelings in some form. Eventually, this led to a sort of storytelling developing quite naturally.

2) Having exhibited your art in various cultural hubs globally, from San Francisco to Zurich, how do diverse cultural landscapes influence or inspire your creative process? Are there specific experiences from these international exhibitions that stand out to you?

It feels wonderful to have had the opportunity to exhibit my work in so many different places. I am quite shy and prefer to stay in the background, so I rarely visit exhibitions… even if they are my own. However, I recall one exhibition where I observed an older woman standing in front of one of my paintings for a long time. After a while, she noticed me through the crowd and gave me a long look that made me feel as though she understood everything I felt while painting that piece, possibly because she had felt it herself at some point. Maybe I misinterpreted the whole situation, but that woman gave me the feeling that what I do has value, which was hard for me to comprehend at the time.

3) Your artwork was chosen for the Lunar Codex Project’s Polaris Collection, a remarkable honor. Can you share the emotions and thoughts that went through your mind when you learned about this recognition, and what does it mean for you as an artist?

When I was informed about the selection, I must have read the message about 5 or 6 times because I thought I was reading it wrong, as English is not my first language. I think I’ll only truly believe it once the Polaris Collection has been placed. If this is all true and not just a bad joke from the sponsors and SpaceX, it’s impossible to put into words how infinitely grateful I am for such an honor.

4) Your portraits often feature strong and dynamic female characters. What drives this thematic choice, and how do you hope your depictions contribute to broader conversations about empowerment and representation in the art world?

My early career was marked by sexual assaults and harassment. As someone with a rather quiet personality, I was not taken seriously by my male superiors. My skills, despite my qualifications, played no significant role. Since I eventually began to feel exactly as I was treated, I wanted to express in some way that I also possess strength. The characters I created took on a kind of role-model function for me. It’s difficult to say whether I hope this leads to a discussion in the art world, as I am simply sharing my journey in the search for myself.

5) The intersection of art and technology is ever-evolving. How do you navigate the rapidly changing landscape of digital art tools, and what technological advancements have had the most significant impact on your creative process?

I think the biggest impact for me was the Procreate drawing app that became available for the iPad a few years ago. Until then, there were no good drawing apps for the iPad, and the better ones like Photoshop were not yet available for it. And then, of course, there are well-known artist no-gos like Midjourney, Dall-E, or other AI tools. I’ve tried these apps, but I’m still not sure if and how these tools could support me. Sure, they can make the work easier or take it over completely, but where is the dopamine hit when you don’t achieve anything yourself?
