On November 27, 2024, at Al Safa Art & Design Library in Dubai, Inloco Gallery presented its annual conference, Inloco Talks 2024, which focused on urban semiotics in the Gulf region. The event organizers, now in their second year, aim to cultivate interdisciplinary connections among professionals to strengthen interest in the public art scene across the region. Inloco Talks 2024 fostered a synergistic atmosphere where academics, curators, developers, architects, and artists exchanged thoughts and ideas, encouraging an intersectional understanding of the theme.

One of the most compelling presentations was a retrospective by Emirati artist and Dubai Culture representative Khalil Abdulwahid. Drawing from his personal archives, he shared insights on the Emirates Fine Art Society pioneers and the evolution of art movements in the UAE since the 1980s.

Artist Karim Jabbari discussed his extensive and multidisciplinary artistic practice within The Arabic Letter as a Street Art Medium. Notably, the artist’s discourse marks the start of their residency with Inloco Gallery, set to conclude with an art intervention and a solo exhibition in early 2025. Jabbari’s primary medium – calligraphy – serves as a foundation for murals, photography, and video installations, which also became a focal point of Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFares, founder of the Khatt Foundation. In her talk, The Poetics of the Arabic Script in Public Space, she emphasized the significance of Arabic script in shaping the identity of spaces and cities. Central to her speech was the idea that Arabic script is not merely a writing system but a deeply rooted cultural asset tied to poetry, thought, and abstract art. At the close of the first session, esteemed independent curator Nadine Khalil presented her thought-provoking research on languages of embodiment in contemporary art practice. The conference also featured distinguished academics from leading local institutions, whose presentations enriched the discourse with profound scholarly perspectives. Laure Salma Assaf, Assistant Professor at the New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), guided the audience through a deeply introspective examination of urban nostalgia, offering a nuanced academic analysis of this universally relatable subject. Professor Maurice Pomerantz (NYUAD) delivered a fascinating session delving into Abbasid-era graffiti from Baghdad, shedding light on a lesser-explored facet of cultural history. Nelida Fuccaro, Professor of Modern Middle Eastern History at NYUAD, invited

participants to explore the symbolic and visual representations of oil in the urban landscapes of the Persian Gulf. Adding a unique interdisciplinary angle, Dr. Mariam Al-Attar, lecturer at the American University of Sharjah, provided an insightful exploration of semiotics through the prism of Islamic theology and philosophy.

Inloco Talks 2024 concluded with the public talk “Why We Return: Unpacking the Power of Place,” which brought together artist Hessa Alghandi, architect Aida Balaš, the cultural initiative Abu Dhabi Streets, and architectural designer Tala Gharagozlou, moderated by cultural advisor Alexei Afanasiev. The discussion delved into the key aspects of creating successful public art projects, placemaking, and community building, drawing on the speakers’ extensive and diverse expertise. A particularly valuable dimension of the talk was the participants’ reflections on nurturing conditions for creative collaborations and a deeper understanding of how creative industries and municipal authorities can collaborate effectively on public art initiatives.

Inspired by the UAE’s successful space missions, students at a Dubai university recently achieved an impressive milestone by winning the UKSEDS National Rocketry Championship. Competing against 150 university students and 20 teams, the Space Society members at the University of Birmingham Dubai (UoBD) designed and built a rocket from scratch, with support from their UK campus.

Ashton Desouza, the Founding President of the UoBD Space Society and team lead, highlighted the motivation behind their success. “Space has become a priority in the global industry, and the UAE’s milestones inspire us to become a part of this exciting field. Though my team members and I have done mechanical or computer science engineering and not aerospace engineering, we learnt about software designing and manufacturing techniques… all online from our UK counterparts — special thanks to Joseph Ward. We had zero experience before doing this and winning it. This entailed a lot of research, haunting and emailing more experienced people in this field. Ultimately, the payoff was pretty good,” said Desouza.

The UAE student-led rocket traveled approximately 500 meters from the Midlands Rocketry Club in the UK. Desouza explained, “Youth groups from across the United Kingdom go there and launch their rockets as part of the competition. There were many preliminary safety tests to be done before the launch. It had to pass all the checks by the safety range officer.”

The UoBD students won the award with their novel rocket design, successfully demonstrating its launch, recovery, and relaunch on the same day. They were notably the only team to accomplish this feat at the competition.

Another team member, Muhammed Mirza Villantakath, elaborated on their rocket’s features. “Our rocket that weighs 600-700g is a recoverable rocket, which means once you launch it, it has a parachute inside for safe recovery. Otherwise, it becomes ballistic and unsafe. That was one of the requirements of the competition. We prepared our initial design outline and payload preparation in December 2023. The rocket was ready by March.”

The students transported the completed rocket model, which passed all airport security checks. Their UK supplier provided items they couldn’t bring on the plane, such as the phenolic tube, parachute, and rail guides. Arjun Sailesh, the Vice President of the space club and a team member, explained their unique approach. “Conventionally, model rockets use a black-powder ejection charge for parachute recovery. However, due to the need for preliminary safety checks on our recovery system and local regulations prohibiting the commercial use of black powder, we researched and designed an alternative electronic recovery system.”

As a university space club, students engage passionately in various activities, including international competitions, field visits, conferences, and exhibitions, while collaborating with their UK campus.

Meanwhile, another team of six members from UoBD won the UKSEDS Olympus Rover Competition this July. Team lead Sriya Konduparti shared their journey. “Inspired by a visit to the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), where we encountered a model of the Mars Rover, then my team and I embarked on designing our six-wheel rover in November 2023.”

After seven months of relentless effort and innovation, they completed the design in May 2024. “As a Computer Science student, I had to dive into new realms, mastering fusion and PCB design along with some other concepts that we required for the same,” she added. Despite the many redesigns and learning challenges, the students’ enthusiasm and perseverance led them to build a 3kg rover that they are proud of today.

Egyptian expat Jana Khalifa highlighted the challenges they faced. “One challenge we encountered was acquiring all the necessary materials. We sourced them from various electronic suppliers in Dubai and Sharjah, assembled them locally, and received some from the university. Transporting the rover to the UK was another hurdle. We had to find a battery that met the airline’s requirements, which meant it had to be under 12 volts and depleted before the flight. Ultimately, it was all worth it when we won,” added the 20-year-old.

Etsy, the online marketplace known for handmade and vintage goods, has become a popular platform for artists to showcase and sell their work. However, any online selling platform has advantages and disadvantages to consider. So, is Etsy worth it for artists? Let’s delve into the good, the bad, and the beautiful (or not-so-beautiful) to help you decide.

The Allure of Etsy: A Platform for Artistic Expression

For many artists, Etsy offers a compelling proposition:

  • Easy Setup and Low Barrier to Entry: Listing your artwork on Etsy is relatively straightforward, with minimal upfront costs compared to setting up your own online store.
  • Global Reach: Etsy boasts a large customer base that is actively searching for unique, handmade items. This allows artists to reach a wider audience than relying solely on local markets or craft fairs.
  • Established Community: Etsy fosters a sense of community among artists and crafters. You can connect with like-minded individuals, share experiences, and learn from each other.

The Glittering Facade: Fees and Competition

While Etsy offers a convenient platform, it comes with some drawbacks:

  • Fees Can Add Up: Listing fees, transaction fees, and payment processing fees can eat into your profit margin. While Etsy offers a free trial for new listings, these fees accumulate quickly as your shop grows.
  • Standing Out in a Crowded Marketplace: Etsy is a saturated platform with millions of sellers vying for customer attention. It can be challenging to stand out, especially for new artists, requiring strategic marketing and high-quality product photography.
  • Price Wars and Devaluation of Art: The competitive nature of Etsy can lead to price wars. This can devalue your artwork, making it difficult to make a sustainable living if you rely solely on undercutting competitors.

Beyond the Surface: Building a Sustainable Presence

So, is Etsy a dead end for artists? Not necessarily. Here are some ways to maximize your success on the platform:

  • Invest in High-Quality Product Photography: Great photos are essential for grabbing attention and showcasing your work professionally.
  • Craft Compelling Descriptions: Don’t underestimate the power of well-written descriptions. Highlight the story behind your art, the materials used, and the unique value you offer.
  • Embrace Social Media Marketing: Promote your Etsy shop on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Engage with potential customers and build a loyal following.
  • Diversify Your Sales Channels: Don’t rely solely on Etsy. Consider participating in local art shows, creating your own website, or exploring other online marketplaces.

Etsy: A Stepping Stone or a Destination?

Whether Etsy is worth it for artists depends on your goals and artistic journey.

  • For Beginners: Etsy can be a fantastic platform to launch your online presence, gain experience with online sales, and test the market for your artwork.
  • For Established Artists: Etsy can serve as a supplemental sales channel alongside your own website or established galleries. However, relying solely on Etsy might limit your earning potential.

The Final Brushstroke: A Decision for Each Artist

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the Etsy question. Consider your artistic goals, weigh the pros and cons, and experiment to find what works best for you. Remember, Etsy can be a valuable tool in your artistic arsenal, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. You can turn your artistic passion into a thriving business by strategically using Etsy alongside other sales channels and marketing efforts.

The once silent walls are now roaring. Street art, once dismissed as vandalism, has become a powerful platform for social commentary and activism. From bustling metropolises to hidden alleyways, murals are transforming urban landscapes into canvases for sparking conversation and raising awareness on critical issues.

These street artists wield spray cans and stencils like weapons, their art a visual call to action.  Gone are the days of simply beautifying a drab wall.  Today’s street artists tackle issues of social justice, environmental concerns, and political turmoil, using their art to challenge the status quo and empower communities.

The beauty of street art lies in its accessibility.  It bypasses the elitist confines of galleries and museums, making art a part of everyday life for everyone.  A powerful mural on a busy street corner can spark a conversation that a hidden exhibit might never reach.  This democratic nature of these artworks allows artists to connect directly with the public, bypassing traditional gatekeepers of the art world.

Let’s meet some of these revolutionary artists using their murals to ignite change:

  • Keith Haring (USA): A pioneer of the street art movement, Haring’s bold, cartoon-like figures addressed issues of war, AIDS, and societal pressures. His iconic murals, like the radiant baby crawling towards a nuclear bomb, remain powerful testaments to the social impact of street art.
  • Banksy (UK): The anonymous artist known for his biting satire and political commentary, Banksy’s stencils appear on walls around the world, often challenging authority and sparking debate.  His thought-provoking murals, like the girl frisking a soldier, offer a critical lens through which to view social and political issues.

These are just a few examples of the countless street artists using their craft to make a difference.  Murals raise awareness and can empower communities and reclaim public spaces.  A neglected alleyway transformed into a vibrant canvas can become a source of pride and a gathering point for the community.

Street artists are not without their challenges.  Legality and censorship remain constant concerns. However, the power of these artistic voices continues to grow. As walls become canvases for social discourse, street art revolutionaries are proving that art can be more than just decoration; it can be a catalyst for change.  So next time you see a mural, take a moment to appreciate the message it conveys.  You might just be inspired to join the conversation.

As an artist or artistic collective, the dream is often to see your work transcend the walls of your studio and reach a wider audience. Travelling museum exhibitions offer a fantastic opportunity to achieve this, fostering cultural exchange and amplifying your artistic voice. But how do you navigate the process of transforming your local exhibition into a touring sensation?

Building Your Artistic Reputation

Establishing a strong artistic reputation is crucial before embarking on the world of travelling exhibitions. Here are some initial steps:

  • Refine your artistic practice: Developing a cohesive body of work with a clear message or theme will resonate more with museums and curators.
  • Participate in local and regional exhibitions: Gain experience showcasing your work professionally and build relationships with local curators who can advocate for your art.
  • Document your work: High-quality photographs and artist statements are essential for curators to understand and promote your exhibition.

Finding the Right Fit: Museums and Curators

Once your artistic foundation is solid, research museums with a curatorial focus that aligns with your work. Here are some prominent examples:

  • USA: The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) is renowned for showcasing American art across the globe [Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service].
  • UAE: The Sharjah Art Museum has a strong track record of supporting and exhibiting contemporary Arab artists [Sharjah Art Museum].

Crafting a Compelling Proposal

Curators receive numerous proposals, so ensure yours stands out. Here’s what to include:

  • A captivating artist statement: Articulate your artistic vision and the themes explored in the exhibition.
  • Detailed exhibition proposal: Clearly outline the number of artworks, required space, and any specific installation needs.
  • High-quality visuals: Professional photographs and a compelling layout will grab the curator’s attention.

Collaboration is Key

Organizing a travelling exhibition is a complex undertaking. Consider collaborating with an artist collective or arts management professional who can handle logistics like:

  • Shipping and insurance: Negotiating secure transportation and comprehensive insurance for your artwork is vital.
  • Installation and de-installation: Ensure clear instructions are provided for each venue, and consider including an installation manual.
  • Marketing and promotion: Work with each museum to develop a targeted marketing strategy to draw audiences.

Examples of Successful Traveling Exhibitions

Seeking inspiration? Here are a few examples of artist-driven travelling exhibitions:

  • “Desert Sands: Contemporary Art from the UAE” (2010-2012): Curated by the Sharjah Art Museum, this exhibition showcased the works of Emirati artists across the US, raising international awareness of the UAE’s burgeoning art scene.
  • “Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power” (2017-2021): This groundbreaking exhibition, spearheaded by artist Theaster Gates, toured major museums in the US and celebrated the contributions of Black artists during the Civil Rights era.

The Road to Success

Organizing a travelling exhibition requires dedication, strategic planning, and collaboration. You can turn your local exhibition into a global conversation starter by establishing your artistic credentials, tailoring proposals to specific museums, and building a strong support team. Remember, the journey itself can be an enriching experience, fostering new connections and expanding your artistic reach. So, pack your (metaphorical) bags and get ready to hit the road!

Food and art: two seemingly disparate creations, yet they dance a beautiful tango on our plates and in galleries alike. From the meticulous plating that transforms a meal into a masterpiece to the edible installations that redefine the dining experience, the intersection of art and food is a delicious phenomenon.

Plating as Performance:

Imagine a plate not as a canvas but as a stage. A bed of vibrantly coloured mashed potatoes becomes the backdrop, a perfectly seared steak is the star, and artfully placed asparagus spears are the supporting cast. Studies by the Journal of Consumer Psychology have shown that plating can influence our perception of a dish’s taste by up to 22%. This meticulous arrangement isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a performance designed to tantalize the eyes before the taste buds get involved.

Edible Masterpieces:

Step beyond the plate and enter the world of edible art installations. Food artists like Laila Ali fan the flames of creativity, crafting sculptures and landscapes entirely out of culinary delights. Imagine a shimmering chocolate waterfall cascading over a bed of crumbled cookie “rocks” or a vibrant cityscape constructed from colourful candies and marzipan buildings. These edible installations push the boundaries of art and cuisine, creating immersive experiences that challenge our traditional notions of both.

Food Photography: A Digital Delicacy:

Food photography has become an art form in our hyper-visual world. Gone are the days of blurry snapshots; today’s food photography is a symphony of light, composition, and styling. Food stylists meticulously arrange each element, ensuring every morsel is picture-perfect. Photographers employ clever lighting techniques to highlight the textures and colours of the dish, making it practically leap off the screen. A 2023 survey by Social Media Today revealed that 73% of millennials are more likely to try a dish they’ve seen on social media, highlighting the immense power of food photography in driving culinary trends.

Beyond the Plate:

The fusion of art and food extends far beyond the realm of restaurants and galleries. Social media platforms like Instagram are teeming with food bloggers and home cooks who transform everyday meals into artistic masterpieces. From intricately decorated bento boxes to rainbow-coloured smoothie bowls, these culinary creations showcase the playful intersection of creativity and cuisine.

The next time you sit down for a meal, take a moment to appreciate the artistry involved. From the plating to the presentation, food is more than mere sustenance; it’s a delightful dance between the culinary and the creative, a feast for the eyes and the stomach. So dig in, savour the flavours, and appreciate the artistic masterpiece before you.
