Architecture studio Snøhetta has designed La Nube, a cloud-shaped children’s museum in downtown El Paso, Texas. Since the city sits just two kilometers from the Mexican border, the design symbolizes both the imagination of children and the fluid nature of clouds. These natural formations move freely across borders, much like the people who travel between El Paso and Juárez every day.

Elaine Molinar, managing director at Snøhetta and an El Paso native, explained that the museum’s form was inspired by multiple cloud-related ideas. “Clouds don’t adhere to cultural or political borders,” she said. “They symbolize a shared sky, just like the people in El Paso and Juárez, who move seamlessly between both countries in their daily lives.” Because of this concept, the museum was designed to be open, welcoming, and inspiring.

Innovative Design for Learning and Play

The exterior of La Nube includes several striking features:

  • A flowing, cloud-like roof with undulating gables and vaults, reinforcing the theme.
  • Three types of aluminum paneling, creating a mist-like effect on the facade.
  • Circular and vertical windows, carefully positioned to filter intense desert sunlight.
  • Fiber-optic lighting, which transforms the facade into a starry display at night.

Above the main entrance, a cantilevered deck extends outward, offering visitors an exciting water play area. This space overlooks a drought-tolerant landscaped park, which was designed with sustainability in mind. The park continuously recycles the water, and a visible filtration system teaches children about water conservation.

Inside, the building spans four levels, each thoughtfully designed for exploration. Some of the key features include:

  • A grand staircase, leading visitors from the lobby to the upper floors.
  • Crisscrossing stairways and mezzanines, providing dynamic viewpoints.
  • Colorful, interactive installations, developed in collaboration with exhibition designers Gyroscope.
  • A central climbing structure, made of stacked geometric shapes, encouraging hands-on play.

The second and third floors house exhibition spaces arranged around a large open atrium, ensuring that children always feel connected to the rest of the museum. Meanwhile, the school tucked away the classrooms and administrative offices at the back. On the fourth floor, a terrace extends outward, seamlessly connecting to the water park below.

A Museum Without Borders

Given its unique location, the museum embraces a cross-border connection. A large screen in the lobby displays a live feed from a museum in Mexico, helping children feel connected to their peers across the border. To reinforce inclusivity, all signage is bilingual, with Spanish and English given equal prominence.

“We wanted the architecture to be more than just a container for exhibits,” Molinar said. “It had to be an experience in itself—playful, educational, and reflective of its environment.”

Since border architecture often sparks political debate in the U.S., La Nube stands out as a powerful symbol of unity, creativity, and cross-cultural exchange. By designing a space that fosters learning and collaboration, Snøhetta has created a museum that truly transcends borders.

Paris-based Atelier du Pont and Menorca’s Aru Arquitectura have completed a striking renovation of Estancia San José, a former farmhouse and stone barn, into a vibrant vacation home. Located in 76 hectares of unspoiled Menorcan countryside, this four-bedroom retreat blends rustic charm with contemporary design, featuring bold architectural details and an unexpected acid-yellow kitchen.

Reviving a Historic Farmhouse with Modern Design

Originally in complete ruin, the buildings have been fully restored, maintaining their historic character while integrating modern comforts. The project was inspired by traditional Menorcan craftsmanship, incorporating handmade fixtures, natural materials, and regional design elements.

Atelier du Pont’s founders, Anne-Cécile Comar and Philippe Croisier, emphasized the delicate balance between preservation and reinvention:

“We preserved the character of both buildings but reimagined the entire space, paying homage to Menorcan savoir-faire while integrating design influences from Africa, the Middle East, and Patagonia, reflecting the homeowners’ global experiences.”

A Light-Filled Interior with Thoughtful Touches

The former barn, which originally had just one arched window, has been transformed into a bright and airy living space. Pivoting glass doors now punctuate the stone facade, echoing the shape of the original livestock entrance while inviting in natural light and countryside views.

In the old farmhouse, three small rooms were merged to create a spacious kitchen, anchored by acid-yellow tiles, inspired by a faded yellow ceiling from the original structure. This vibrant addition stands in contrast to the earthy terracotta flooring and textured stone walls, creating a playful yet harmonious aesthetic.

Blending Natural Materials and Handcrafted Details

Throughout the home, the designers prioritized natural textures and handmade elements, including:

  • Iroko wood joinery, enhancing warmth and depth
  • Handwoven headboards, celebrating artisanal craftsmanship
  • Custom-designed terracotta and rope side tables, adding organic elegance

The renovation also introduced a hammam and a large outdoor swimming pool, further elevating the home’s luxury vacation appeal.

Menorca’s Growing Appeal as a Design Destination

While Menorca remains less commercialized than its neighboring islands Mallorca and Ibiza, it has been gaining attention in recent years, particularly with the arrival of Hauser & Wirth’s renowned art gallery.

With its thoughtful restoration and unique design approach, Estancia San José stands as a new benchmark for vacation homes in Menorca. The owners plan to rent out the property to holidaymakers, offering guests a one-of-a-kind retreat that blends history, craftsmanship, and modern luxury.

Adrian James Architects has designed a sustainable “habitable power station” in Oxford, named Copper Bottom, featuring a green-patinated copper shell and solar panels to generate more energy than the house consumes.

Sustainable Design Meets Sculptural Form

Copper Bottom, a self-build project by Adrian James for his family, is located on Harcourt Hill in Oxford, surrounded by wildflower meadows. The two-storey house follows a simple cuboid form, covered by a sculptural copper shell that provides shelter and minimizes energy demand. The design aims to achieve a high sustainability benchmark.

“The starting points were a compact form, a roof maximising southerly aspect for solar panels, and an envelope which sheltered the windows from high sun,” James explained. “These primary moves established the basics, then it was a case of sculpting this basic form to create something uplifting and resonant.”

The Origami-Inspired Copper Shell

The defining feature of Copper Bottom is its “origami-esque” shell, which includes an angled roof that cantilevers out to block high summer sun while allowing low winter rays. Creased bulges on the east and west sides of the house create deep reveals for the windows, enhancing energy efficiency.

On top, two “ears” form ventilation stacks to draw in cool air at night and expel hot air accumulated during the day. James described the form as having “subtle hints of something zoomorphic and something mechanistic,” capturing a sense of dynamism.

A Self-Sustaining Power Station

The roof of Copper Bottom features 37 photovoltaic panels, generating more energy than the house requires. The house is zero-carbon in operation and is expected to offset its embodied energy. “The intention is for the house to be a habitable power station – actually something we want all our designs to be,” said James.

The superstructure is made of prefabricated timber panels with lightweight timber trusses supporting a plywood skin. An air-source heat pump reduces the energy demand for water heating, and the focus on airtightness improves energy efficiency.

Material Choices for Durability and Aesthetics

Copper was chosen for its durability, low maintenance, and sustainability. The green-patinated copper was pretreated in a factory to achieve a verdigris finish, harmonising with the surrounding greenery. The interior features white walls, a central double-height gallery space, and a large textured brick feature wall.

The flooring combines large format porcelain tiles on the ground floor with stained oak joinery and flooring upstairs. Large windows offer expansive views of the surrounding countryside and the spires of central Oxford.

Copper Bottom represents a blend of contemporary architectural design, sustainability, and a deep respect for the natural environment.

Innovative Use of Materials and Design Philosophy Breaths New Life into a Formerly Abandoned Site

In a creative and sustainable project, architecture studio Chaoffice has designed the House of Bluff, a distinctive home in rural China that merges concrete, reclaimed stone, and timber to create a vibrant living space. Situated near Beijing on what was once described as a “wasteland” covered with rubble and remnants from a partially collapsed building, the house has been constructed on a five-bedroom site that has now transformed into a functional and aesthetically captivating home.

Reclaimed Stone and Concrete Frames: A Sustainable Approach

Chaoffice’s approach to the site utilized materials readily available in the area, such as reclaimed stones from the ruins. These stones were used to infill an exposed concrete frame, providing both structural support and a visual connection to the environment. The home is shaped as a playful, two-storey structure, with a mix of terraces, walkways, and courtyards that are interconnected by a metal staircase and a slide, offering a sense of fun and engagement.

“We decided to build a house featuring multiple semi-outdoor spaces and independent structures, creating a sense of grandiosity despite the limited footprint,” explained the studio. The design maximizes the site’s potential, infusing a “sense of rejuvenation” into the abandoned land by transforming it into what the architects describe as a “playground.”

The overall design of the home is guided by two existing trees, which serve as focal points for two courtyards. These courtyards divide the house into two wings—one public wing on the west side, which contains the living areas, and a more private wing on the east side, dedicated to the bedrooms and staff spaces.

Cubic Geometry and Functional Design

The home’s design revolves around a simple, geometric 4.5-metre by 4.5-metre cubic unit, which forms the building blocks for the various spaces within the home. The architects used this grid to create the house’s fundamental elements such as porches, houses, and “hollow frames.”

“In some instances, sections of these units were partially removed to enhance light and sight-lines for the neighbours, as well as to soften the building’s presence on the adjacent street,” the studio explained, revealing the design’s careful consideration for both functionality and harmony with the surrounding environment.

Split Levels and Thoughtful Material Contrasts

Organized across two levels, the home takes advantage of the site’s topography. The entrance is located on the western edge, where a long wooden stair descends into the double-height living area. Full-height windows in this space offer views over the surrounding terraces, with a sunken bath positioned on the ground floor that can be accessed via a separate entrance.

Changes in level are a recurring theme throughout the home, with a metal slide that connects the entrance hall to the courtyard, as well as a metal spiral staircase linking the two outdoor levels that connect the wings. The kitchen area on the ground floor is centered around a concrete fireplace, with columns supporting a bath above it. The stepped wood-panelled ceiling above reflects the structure’s unique design.

Inside, the use of plywood panelling contrasts with the rougher surfaces of the exposed concrete and reclaimed stone, highlighting the duality between structural integrity and aesthetic refinement. “The walls are finished with warm-toned stucco plaster, with the projecting structural frames re-covered in wooden paneling,” explained the studio. “This deliberate interplay of two materials not only creates a striking visual contrast but also implied the dualistic juxtaposition of structure and maintenance systems, enriching its architectural narrative.”

Chaoffice, founded by Cheng Zhi in 2016, continues to make a mark with projects that bring new life to rural China through thoughtful and sustainable design. The House of Bluff exemplifies the potential for rejuvenating forgotten spaces while embracing the local environment and culture.

Renowned French designer Philippe Starck has redefined Brazilian modernism with the interiors of a luxurious penthouse at the Rosewood São Paulo. Set within the Mata Atlantica “vertical garden tower”, designed by architect Jean Nouvel, the penthouse features a blend of contemporary aesthetics and local materials, offering guests a sustainable and culturally rich experience.

This 12,000-square-foot, multi-level penthouse crowns the tower, boasting breathtaking panoramic views of São Paulo. It comfortably accommodates eight guests, making it an ideal retreat for both relaxation and inspiration.

Local Materials and Brazilian Craftsmanship

Starck’s design utilizes marbles from Paraná and ipe wood, crafting a sophisticated yet dramatic homage to Brazilian modernism. The Rosewood team emphasized that the interiors are designed to harmonize with the vibrant cityscape while providing a tranquil escape. “While the layout allows for separation from the hustle and bustle below, all design touches still work to make guests feel connected to the spirit of the city,” the team noted.

Art and Design Highlight Brazilian Culture

The penthouse is adorned with an eclectic collection of artworks and furniture by renowned Brazilian artists, including Oscar Niemeyer, Tarsila do Amaral, and Julio Bittencourt. “The artists’ works tell different stories of life in Brazil across various mediums, including sculpture, paintings, tile work, drawings, textiles, and rugs, providing a visual and meaningful touchpoint back to the destination’s rich culture,” added the team.

Architectural Marvels and Luxurious Amenities

The centerpiece of the penthouse is a double-height living area framed by floor-to-ceiling glass walls. A high-gloss ceiling reflects the skyline, enhancing the sense of space and light. A focal floating marble staircase, inspired by Niemeyer’s iconic designs, connects the main floor to the mezzanine, which houses a study, TV room, and additional bedrooms.

The primary suite features a marble-clad bathroom with an egg-shaped bathtub overlooking the city through glass panels. Guests can enjoy electronically controlled blackout curtains, ensuring complete privacy and comfort.

The rooftop is a lush retreat, designed as a jungle-like garden with flagstone pathways leading to seating areas, a hot tub, and an infinity pool that overlooks Avenida Paulista. This pool is framed by vibrant blue, green, and orange stone, with a pitched weathering-steel canopy echoing the historic rooflines of the nearby Cidade Matarazzo.

Seamless Luxury and Services

Residents of the penthouse and other serviced apartments in the tower gain access to the Rosewood hotel’s restaurants, pools, spa, and fitness center. Brad Berry, Rosewood’s Vice President of Global Residential Development, explained, “People are no longer just looking for a home, but a fully serviced lifestyle. Owners gain access to a carefully curated lifestyle where every detail has been designed to meet the highest standard of comfort and sophistication.”

The Rosewood São Paulo penthouse reflects Starck’s mastery in blending luxury with cultural authenticity, setting a benchmark for residential hospitality. His work continues to shape South American architecture, following his recent skyscraper project in Ecuador.

Installation explores multi-sensory vehicle experiences through bioplastics and Lexus technology.

Design studio Crafting Plastics has collaborated with Lexus to create an innovative 3D-printed kinetic car structure using sustainable bioplastics. Unveiled at the ICA Miami during the city’s art week, the Liminal Cycles installation is a futuristic representation of the Lexus LF-ZC, an all-electric concept car, showcasing advanced technology and sustainable materials.

Revolutionizing Automotive Design

The central piece of the installation is a skeletal interpretation of the LF-ZC, crafted from Crafting Plastics’ Nuatan bioplastic. This bioplastic is designed to decompose naturally, aligning with the studio’s focus on environmentally friendly materials. Covered with a UV-reactive coating, the car changes colour when exposed to sunlight, embodying a dynamic, organic aesthetic.

Vlasta Kubušová, co-founder of Crafting Plastics, highlighted the material’s potential: “Since all these materials are made from natural resources, we wanted to show their origin of nature and [that] they will become a part of nature when they are decomposed.”

This installation also marks a milestone for the studio, as it represents the first large-scale application of Nuatan bioplastic using a 3D printer. Kubušová added, “It could be [used] for everything from big interior pieces to even facades. I think 3D printing is definitely the technology of the future… and it doesn’t leave any waste.”

Exploring Multi-Sensory Driving Experiences

The project draws inspiration from Lexus’ Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), a groundbreaking AI-driven software designed to enhance drivers’ multi-sensory experiences. Features such as personalized lighting, sounds, and scents replace traditional sensory elements like engine noise and fuel smells in electric vehicles.

Calty Design Research Chief Designer Sellene Lee elaborated: “In an electrified vehicle, we don’t have those [engine sounds and smells], but [the user] still wants this kind of exciting vehicle, and we want to offer that kind of experience for our users.”

Interactive Sculptures Reflect the Five Senses

In addition to the kinetic car, the installation features three neighbouring sculptures exploring the senses. A flower-like sculpture, representative of a steering wheel, generates sound fluctuations when touched. Another piece emits a Lexus-inspired scent, immersing viewers in a sensory journey.

This collaboration builds on Lexus’ ongoing partnership with artists and designers. Alongside Liminal Cycles, objects by Suchi Reddy, Michael Bennett, Germane Barnes, and Tara Sakhi were exhibited, showcasing Lexus’ commitment to integrating art, design, and innovation.

Liminal Cycles remains on display at ICA Miami, reflecting the evolving intersection of sustainability, technology, and automotive design during Miami Art Week.

Casa Milano, a frontrunner in luxury home solutions, has debuted its most expansive booth yet at this year’s Downtown Design event at Dubai Design District (d3), reinforcing its leadership role in the UAE’s evolving design industry. The impressive booth provides an immersive experience, showcasing Casa Milano’s extensive range of luxury home products, from state-of-the-art kitchen installations to premium tiles and sanitaryware. This marks another step forward in the brand’s dedication to offering high-quality, innovative designs.

For the second consecutive year, Casa Milano is bringing back its acclaimed Talking Walls initiative, which continues to push creative boundaries and engage young designers. This year’s theme, “Reimagining the Bathroom Experience,” brings together some of the UAE’s most forward-thinking design studios, each tasked with transforming a 12-square-metre space into a stunning bathroom mockup.

Participating studios include Roar (Urban), 4 Space Interiors (Quirky), DZ Design (Whimsical), XBD Collective (Art Deco), Broadway Interiors (Power), Swiss Bureau (Aquatonic), Known (Kitsch), and AK Designo (Minimalist). Over three weeks, each team, supported by senior mentors, developed and refined their concepts before presenting their designs in their respective studios.

“Talking Walls: Reimagining the Bathroom Experience” is not just about showcasing creative talent; it is also a celebration of design excellence. A panel of experts will award the main prize — a trip to Europe — to the most outstanding design, marking a significant recognition of innovation in the field. In addition, other awards include The Best Executed Stand, The Public Vote Award, The Most Sustainable Design Award, and The Best Presentation Award, creating multiple opportunities to honour exceptional achievements in design.

Casa Milano’s role as a platform for emerging talent is exemplified through the Talking Walls initiative. The project bridges the gap between seasoned professionals and young designers, fostering an environment of collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. Casa Milano’s dedication to nurturing fresh talent and pushing the boundaries of design reinforces its commitment to setting new standards in luxury home solutions and contributing to the UAE’s flourishing design ecosystem.

Azhar Sajan, the visionary behind Casa Milano, shared his excitement about the initiative: “Talking Walls is more than just a feature for us; it’s a commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in the design community. This initiative allows us to go beyond showcasing products — we’re sharing ideas, nurturing young talent, and giving them a platform to express their visions in a meaningful way. Good design tells a story, and at Casa Milano, we believe every designer, especially the next generation, should have a voice in that narrative.”

Visitors to Downtown Design are invited to explore Casa Milano’s bold presence, where luxury, innovation, and a commitment to supporting the design community come together, setting new benchmarks for the future of interiors in the UAE and beyond.
