Sotheby’s auction house recently made history by selling the first piece of artwork created by a humanoid robot using artificial intelligence (AI) for an impressive $1 million. The artwork, titled A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing (2024), far exceeded its estimated value of $120,000 to $180,000, fetching $1,084,800 at the auction.

The portrait, created by Ai-Da Robot, a humanoid robot artist, was inspired by mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing, known for his groundbreaking work in artificial intelligence. The 64-inch by 90-inch mixed-media piece on canvas attracted 27 bids during the Digital Art day sale on November 7. Ai-Da Robot employs a combination of cameras in its eyes, AI algorithms, and a robotic arm to create art.

“This auction marks a significant moment in the art world, where Ai-Da’s work brings attention to the societal and artistic transformations occurring as AI continues to evolve,” said Aidan Meller, the U.K.-based art dealer and creator of Ai-Da. “The A.I. God piece raises important questions about agency and power as AI technology continues to grow.”

Ai-Da Robot, named after Ada Lovelace, the pioneering computer programmer, has drawn attention for its unique ability to blend technology and creativity. The robot is often depicted with a black bob wig, dressed in a t-shirt and denim overalls.

Sotheby’s vice president and digital art expert Michael Bouhanna commented on the growing demand for AI-based art. “After engaging with key collectors at the intersection of art and technology, it was clear there was significant interest in Ai-Da’s A.I. God portrait,” Bouhanna said. “While there’s limited historical data to gauge the market for singular AI works, demand for this piece was undeniably strong.”

The artwork had previously been displayed at the AI for Good Global Summit held at the United Nations in Geneva in May 2024, where it was featured as part of a five-panel Polyptych.

The auction result for Ai-Da’s portrait made up a significant portion of Sotheby’s Digital Art day sale, which totaled $1,485,840. Other notable works included pieces by digital artists such as Refik Anadol, PAK, and Xcopy. However, the highest-estimated work, Xcopy’s DOOM Party, did not sell at the auction.

In a scathing critique of the burgeoning world of artificial intelligence-generated art, renowned Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei has asserted that art easily replicated by AI is “meaningless.” The provocative statement comes amidst a heated debate surrounding AIs utilizing scraped data from artists’ websites to produce images purportedly in the style of renowned creators.

Several class-action lawsuits in the United States have drawn attention, with artists discovering thousands of images created by AIs using their work without permission. Ai Weiwei dismissively commented, “That’s not a problem. I think that kind of art should [have died] a long time ago,” as he questioned the validity of art teaching centred on producing “realistic” images, considering AI’s ability to replicate them almost instantly.

The dissident artist went further, suggesting that even legendary figures like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse would have reconsidered their artistic approach if AI had been present in their era. Ai Weiwei contended, “It’d be just impossible for them to still think [the same way].”

Undeterred by the rise of artificial intelligence, Ai Weiwei announced his next project, a collaboration with an AI named “Ai vs AI.” The project involves both himself and the AI answering a set of 81 questions over 81 days. The questions, ranging from the endurance of love and hate to the guilt of Edward Snowden, will be projected on prominent screens worldwide, including Piccadilly Circus, and the answers will be subsequently posted online.

Describing the project as “a bit of fun,” Ai Weiwei likened it to throwing a pebble across a pond to observe the ripple effect. However, he cautioned about the potential dangers of an overly powerful and globally relied-upon artificial intelligence. Drawing parallels to historical events, he expressed concerns that an AI-dominated society might resemble the totalitarian ideologies of the Third Reich or the Cultural Revolution in China.

Ai Weiwei, born in Beijing in 1957, has been an outspoken critic of the Chinese authorities throughout his career. Raised in labour camps after his father’s exile, the dissident artist is no stranger to challenging the status quo. His recent involvement in a controversy over free speech and the Israel-Gaza conflict led to the indefinite postponement of his exhibition by the Lisson Gallery.

Reflecting on his role as an artist, Ai Weiwei emphasized the responsibility to ask difficult questions and challenge the powerful. Despite facing backlash for his outspoken views, he asserted, “My mission is about asking questions and not massaging the powerful, not to make them feel comfortable. I’m undertaking a dangerous mission, and so far, I’m still alive.”

As technology continues to reshape the landscape of artistic creation, Ai Weiwei’s critique serves as a thought-provoking contribution to the ongoing dialogue on the intersection of art and artificial intelligence.

Sharjah, UAE: The future of art has touched down in the heart of Sharjah. As artificial intelligence entwines with artistic flair, an unparalleled experience emerges. Curated by the visionary team at Magzoid Magazine, “Harmony,” a one-of-a-kind installation, has been unveiled at Mega Mall, uniquely focused on breast cancer awareness.

Proudly presented by Golden Loaf and Golden Ribbons Chocolates, “Harmony” is not merely an exhibit. It’s a sanctuary where cutting-edge technology meets sentimental storytelling. The heart of this sanctuary is a meticulously designed art installation filled with AI-generated artworks. These masterpieces unfold a tale of hope, despair, unity, challenges, and triumph, mirroring the breast cancer journey from diagnosis to recovery. As visitors navigate through this winding journey, they not only witness art but also feel the depth and flow of emotions that each artwork evokes. It’s an intimate portrayal, ensuring breast cancer narratives are not only heard but profoundly felt.

Through the installation, one doesn’t just hear the stories—they live them, they breathe them, and they feel them.  As guests navigate the installation, they confront the inescapable truth that, unlike them, there is no exit for those battling breast cancer. The installation yields not just the journey of a breast cancer patient but also the internal turmoil. The tears that fall from the eyes of our guests serve as reminders—reminders that while they may only experience this heartening simulation for a couple of minutes, for these patients, this is an ongoing, lifelong fight. Their unwavering bravery is what sets alight to their eternal torch of hope within.

Yet, the purpose of this installation extends far beyond a momentary engagement. It screams for each one of us to undertake a profound transformation rooted in empathy and in using our voices to uplift and empower those who battle silently and often go unheard. Through this initiative, each one becomes a beacon and a voice for the fighters, survivors, and those we have lost.

The spokesperson of Magzoid Magazine remarked, “Art has forever been a canvas for humanity’s most profound stories. With ‘Harmony’, we’ve embarked on uncharted territories. Here, AI doesn’t replace the artist; it portrays the artist, understanding and echoing the deeply emotional journey of breast cancer survivors.”

A visitor, deeply moved by the installation, shared, “It is amazing to see how art can be fused with AI to deliver such thought-provoking messages within society. A family member of mine has been suffering from the same. I was literally in tears as I walked through the installation, witnessing the vivid stages of the journey, from the challenges to the eventual healing.”

From the emotional journey of the installation to the magnificent art exhibit on the first floor of the mall by UAE-based artists who stand in solidarity for the cause, showcasing their impressive pieces of work for visitors to gaze through and learn from.

The principal presenter, Golden Loaf, as a group, has long championed initiatives with social causes. “In Harmony, we see more than an installation. It’s a beacon, a statement, a call to awareness,” shared the CEO of Golden Ribbon Chocolates. Complementing the vision are the supporting pillars: Debros Exhibitions and Events, ARTOZE Gallery and Exhibitions, DRNK, Al Mufeed Printing Press, Evolution Events, and Rajasthan Restaurant.

“Harmony” is a movement, a journey, a dialogue, and a statement. While its grand unveiling graced Mega Mall on October 15th, the experience will linger until October 31st, waiting to captivate, educate, and inspire.

For the residents of the UAE and beyond, the call is clear: Venture into Mega Mall. Immerse yourself in a world where art and AI converge, where stories aren’t just told; they’re lived, felt, and remembered.

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., delivered a landmark ruling on Friday, stating that artwork created by artificial intelligence (AI) is not eligible for copyright protection due to its lack of “human involvement.” This ruling, which echoes a decision made by the United States Copyright Office in March, marks a significant legal development in the world of AI-generated art.

Judge Beryl A. Howell of the US District Court for the District of Columbia concurred with the US Copyright Office’s determination to deny copyright protection to an artwork produced by computer scientist Stephen Thaler using his AI system known as the “Creativity Machine.” In her decision, Judge Howell emphasized that courts have consistently declined to acknowledge copyright in works devoid of human contribution.

The case revolved around Thaler’s application for copyright protection for his AI-generated artwork titled “A Recent Entrance to Paradise.” Thaler, the founder of Imagination Engines, an artificial neural network technology company, contended that the artwork was autonomously created by an AI algorithm operating on a machine. However, the Copyright Office deemed this description inconsistent with the core principles of copyright law, which require that a work be the product of human creative thought.

The judge acknowledged the evolving landscape of copyright law in light of AI-generated art and the challenges it poses to defining the extent of human involvement required for copyright protection. She recognized that the proliferation of generative AI will raise complex questions regarding the eligibility of such artworks for copyright safeguards.

In her conclusion, Judge Howell highlighted that this case was relatively straightforward because Thaler himself stated in his copyright application that he had not directly participated in the creation of the artwork.

The emergence of AI-generative platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Midjourney has intensified legal complexities surrounding appropriation art, a practice in which artists repurpose existing creations. These AI systems contribute to the mass creation of digital artworks, prompting legal quandaries reminiscent of those faced by artists like Richard Prince and Andy Warhol.

Thaler’s attorney, Ryan Abbott of Brown Neri Smith & Khan LLP, expressed intentions to appeal the judge’s decision. Abbott contested the interpretation of the Copyright Act, emphasizing that according copyright protection to AI-generated works could inspire creativity and align with the underlying principles of copyright law.

The ruling sets an important precedent in the evolving landscape of AI-generated art and copyright law, signaling a need for further legal clarity as technology continues to redefine the boundaries of human creativity and artistic expression.

The addition of augmented reality brings the artwork to life, making it an immersive experience for art lovers.

The artwork explores how the power of words can create multiple images and realities, and showcases how AI technology can be unique to each artist’s creative process. amrita’s signature motto of ‘a word is worth 1,000 images’ as it resonates with ai- where word prompts are able to produce thousands of images- a phenomenon that’s taking the world by storm

The Museum of Art and Photography (MAP) is a newly constructed 44,000 square feet box-shaped structure in the central district of Bangalore, India, located across from one of the city’s largest green spaces. It is set to become India’s first major art museum dedicated to the full range of contemporary visual culture of the subcontinent, promising to redefine the country’s museum landscape in the process. The museum’s exterior features a monochrome mural by street artist Marco Santini that comprises words submitted by the community, such as meaningful, mirror, and inspiration.

MAP was founded by philanthropist and collector Abhishek Poddar, who hopes to share his transformative experience in the Indian art scene with others. The museum’s main mission is to serve as a catalyst in developing a more regular museum-going culture in India by encouraging the public to engage with art more thoughtfully in their home country. Poddar aims to make the museum as inclusive as possible by incorporating diverse voices and dismantling hierarchies between high and low art, collapsing the divisions between mediums.

The museum’s compact, column-free five floors offer visitors an opportunity to view and engage with the art in well-lit free-flowing spaces. MAP’s collection of 60,000 objects includes paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, which is on equal footing with textiles, memorabilia from the Hindi film industry, and works by Indigenous artists historically excluded from India’s own art history. The museum’s space allows it to reframe the narrative of Indian art history from an Indian perspective, which is clear in its opening displays, ranging from how women are depicted within the permanent collection to preserving the underknown photographic work of a major artist.

MAP launched its online presence in December 2020, becoming one of the first digital museums in the country. The pandemic has radically changed how visitors engage with museums, both physically and digitally, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Apart from virtual exhibitions, artist talks, and VR experiences, the online project also includes MAP Academy, an expansive online resource that makes digitally available South Asian art histories, including online courses and an art history encyclopedia.

MAP’s significant use of technology ultimately aids its mission of helping people understand why museums are still relevant today. The museum has collaborated with global IT services company Accenture for a digital intervention, using AI to create a 3-D hologram of the late artist M.F. Hussain. Visitors can speak with the pioneering artist of Indian modernism, both online and now in the museum’s physical space. Visitors can also access the digital records for all of MAP’s permanent collection, even pieces not on display, in its Sasken Multimedia Gallery.

The Museum of Art and Photography has a robust commissioning program with 20 new works spread across the museum’s grounds. It focuses on artists working with digital technologies, and its solo show of contemporary artist Tallur L.N. features a series of sculptures and a video that draw upon ancient Hindu mythology and contemporary narratives around AI. The exhibition, titled “Chirag-e-AI,” responds to 18- and 19th-century lamps in the museum’s collection. One lamp is based upon the half-man half-animal creature Purushamriga, who moves at the speed of light and is visible only to devotees of Shiva. Tallur sees AI as having “the power to both help and destroy.

Little in 2022 split the art world as much as its turbulent relationship with technology in a year marked by several crises. On the one hand, Christie’s recorded a 96% fall in NFT sales over the course of the year, despite the fact that the entry of artists like Takashi Murakami into the NFT arena has given the space some much-needed respectability.

Numerous creatives and platforms continue to investigate methods to use the technology, with uses ranging from practical to abstract, social to commercial, even if the medium is still vulnerable to the same issues as the crypto market.

As long as meme art tokens continue to oversaturate online marketplaces, some will continue to question the viability of NFTs as a creative medium. After the excitement subsided, concerns have been expressed regarding the supposed “worth” of NFT art, which consists of conceptual pieces that are simple to produce repeatedly as opposed to actual works by contemporary artists.

In other places, advocates of blockchain continue to hold fast to the utopian vision that the technology is helping to build — whether it be as a way to confirm provenance and authenticity or as a promised land of opportunity for up-and-coming artists.

The year of artificial intelligence was 2022, not 2021, which was the year of NFTs. The rise and publication of AI image generators over the past 12 months, like Dall-E and Midjourney, has provided an unmatched window into exactly how potent these algorithms have become.

By entering “Arab man drinking coffee in the style of Van Gogh” and witnessing it produce a precise representation in under a minute, there is no easier or more concrete way to experience the power of a contemporary AI system.

Since  this power, many people in the arts and cultural fields are debating where the boundary should be drawn. When do we cease appreciating the distance between the artist and the brush as well as the distance between the brush and the canvas? When is the physical media no longer necessary? Where does it all end, exactly? The modern question is, “What is creativity?,” as Murakami noted.

Automation has long been a problem in many other industries. The argument regarding the upcoming waves of automation, particularly in the creative realms, may be led by AI art as the Fourth Industrial Revolution progresses.

Perhaps there will be a larger push from artists toward the decentralising forces of NFTs if monopolies like Meta attempt to enforce control over these digital spaces, lest the constraints of algorithms created to further commercial interests stifle their creativity.
