The Dubai Sculpture Symposium 2024, an unprecedented event organized by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), is taking place at the Al Shindagha Historical District, gathering renowned sculptors from around the world. This pioneering symposium seeks to spotlight the art of sculpture, enhance Dubai’s cultural identity, and foster collaboration between local and international artists. The event, which will run until 22 December 2024, is designed to nurture creativity and innovation in the world of public art, creating a platform for exchange, learning, and showcasing exceptional artistic expressions.

A Fusion of Art, Heritage, and Innovation

This inaugural edition of the symposium features a vibrant mix of more than 15 artists from various countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, China, Ukraine, and beyond. The participating artists bring unique perspectives and diverse sculpting techniques, creating a global dialogue within the artistic community.

Among the standout works is Emirati artist Dr. Mohammed Yousif‘s sculpture titled Shells, which reflects Dubai’s beauty and essence through the imagery of two mysterious shells. Meanwhile, Azza Al Qubaisi, another Emirati artist, presents Dubai Heart, a dynamic sculpture blending local cultural elements with modern interpretations to symbolize the rapid transformation of the UAE.

Syrian artist Aktham Abdul Hamid showcases Cultural Accumulation, a thought-provoking piece that explores humanity’s historical journey, evolving from ancient experiences to the contemporary age of artificial intelligence. On the other hand, Chinese artist Liu Yang presents Starry Sky in Dubai, which uses light effects to capture the captivating beauty of Dubai’s night skies. Saudi artist Mohammed Al Thagafi’s Conversation represents societal harmony, with its delicate balance of soft and strong elements.

Global Artists Draw Inspiration from Dubai

The symposium also features contributions from artists who have drawn inspiration from Dubai’s rich heritage and modern aspirations. For instance, Romanian sculptor Ana Maria Negara presents Fractal, symbolizing the geometric harmony found in Dubai’s architectural landscape. Georgian artist Jhon Gogaberishvili‘s Fountain metaphorically portrays water droplets as symbols of balance between chaos and beauty. Bulgarian artist Georgi Minchev’s Fragment of Something Bigger examines life’s contrasts through dynamic sculptural forms.

Spanish artist José Millán offers Harmonic Connections, a sculpture that illustrates the concept of unity and the elegance of human relationships through the intertwining of two elements at a central point. Additionally, Ukrainian artist Lyudmyla Mysko, known for her monumental sculptures, showcases Magnetic Designer, a series that harmoniously blends physical forms and spatial voids.

Artists such as Tunisian Mohamed Bouaziz explore themes of life, movement, and environmental preservation, as seen in his sculpture Our Land, while Egyptian artist Said Badr presents City Gate, a piece symbolizing the connection between past, present, and future.

Workshops and Discussions on Art’s Role in Society

The symposium will also feature a series of specialized workshops and panels, which include discussions on sustainable art practices, preserving historical sculptures, and exploring interactive sculpture techniques. These sessions are scheduled for 14 and 21 December and aim to involve both artists and the public in valuable dialogues about how art shapes modern, sustainable societies.

The event will conclude with a special recognition ceremony, honoring the creative contributions of the artists involved. In line with its commitment to promoting global cultural dialogue, Dubai Culture continues to solidify Dubai’s position as a leading hub for art and creativity.

Important note: The symposium is not open to children to ensure a safe and focused environment for all attendees.

In a world increasingly defined by environmental concerns, many contemporary artists are stepping up to address the challenges of our time, spurred by a growing public awareness of climate change and sustainability. One such artist, Christiane Peschek, showcases her work in a captivating exhibition at the NIKA Project Space in Al Quoz, Dubai. The exhibition, titled Fever, is currently on display and will run until January 11, 2025.

Peschek’s multi-sensory showcase features a unique blend of sound, scent, temperature, glass-blown sculptures, AI-inspired portraits, and other visuals, offering an immersive experience that encapsulates the urgent theme of environmental crisis. The gallery describes her work as a “large-scale immersive takeover,” as she confronts the interconnected yet contrasting notions of geographical and corporeal fever dreams.

“Designing an exhibition around ‘fever’—the rising heat of both body and planet—feels especially urgent in a region on the frontlines of climate extremes. Approaching it from a Global South perspective adds a critical layer to my worldview. I want visitors to feel the intensity of these insights, drawn from the region’s culture, the climate crisis, digital realms, and a future-driven mindset,” states Peschek, who is based in Vienna and has conducted research in the Liwa Desert for this project. She further adds, “Working in the UAE has been a transformative experience. The environment, starkly different from what I’ve known, feels both confronting and captivating. Here, I’ve tapped into a well of cultural wisdom and resilience that pushed me to create this new body of work.”

Her latest creations delve into the practical and spiritual aspects of desert landscapes and their rich literatures, exploring cultural contradictions.

One piece draws from local myths surrounding protective desert snakes and the Ouroboros—a serpent in Greek mythology that symbolizes the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. In Fever, this act represents contemporary environmental toxicity.

Veronika Berezina, founder of NIKA Project Space, established the gallery in Dubai last year with a vision to facilitate critical dialogue on contemporary issues and promote philosophical inquiry and artistic experimentation through the works of dynamic artists like Peschek from around the globe.

Formally trained as a lawyer, Berezina expresses her commitment to supporting artistic research and experimentation in her new role as a gallerist. Peschek is the third artist to be invited to NIKA Project Space’s research programme.

Previously, NIKA Project Space featured London-based artist Nika Neelova, who explored ancient marine life at Buhais Geology Park, as well as Katya Muromtseva, who interviewed women migrants in Dubai to inform her solo exhibition.

“I see NIKA’s role as expanding one’s worldview and encouraging empathy through art. With this in mind, our residency programme, which was launched with the opening of the gallery in 2023, invites artists to participate in research trips in the region to discover the nuances of local societies and local life,” Berezina tells us. She acknowledges that Dubai’s vibrant art scene has motivated her to collaborate more closely with local curators, cultural practitioners, and artists, fostering deeper connections and cross-cultural dialogues. “We are now working with Emirati artist Fatma Al Ali. We showed her works in Paris at MENART Fair in September 2023, and she participated in a duo show, Ephemeral Structures, where her newly commissioned work by NIKA Project Space was presented alongside Nika Neelova’s art,” she explains.

One of NIKA Project Space’s core objectives is to champion feminist voices, and the gallery has collaborated with numerous women artists over the past year, including Dalia Khalife, Sara Niroobakhsh, Lilia Ziamou, Katya Muromtseva, Mona Ayyash, Peschek, and most recently, Mirna Bamieh. Berezina elaborates, “I feel like there is the need for female artists to have more access for gallery representation and provide more opportunities for them to showcase their works. Though talent is not about gender, there has been a disbalance in male/female representation for some time.”

Just over a year since its establishment in Dubai, NIKA Project Space has made strides in the European market by opening an outpost in Paris.

This new venture marks an “important step” for Berezina. “The Paris space corresponds with our gallery’s ongoing commitment to highlighting internationally the work and concepts of artists and curators from usually overlooked regions of the world, and create a bridge between Paris and Dubai programmes, facilitating rich exchanges and dialogues, and help to amplify the practices of artists we connect with and provide opportunities for their voices to be heard,” she states. Berezina, who originally hails from St. Petersburg, began her journey as an art collector before relocating to Dubai in 2022 to pursue a career in the art world.

The NIKA Project Space in Paris, located in the Komunuma arts district, recently opened its doors with an exhibition featuring the works of Palestinian artist Mirna Bamieh. Through a thoughtfully curated pantry and fermented ingredients, Bamieh’s ongoing series Sour Things reflects on the themes of displacement and the Palestinian experience. “These works deal with grief, pain, and processing the uncontrollable. They invite reflection and create empathetic spaces. The Sour Things series has always been about processing big topics without providing answers, offering internal, psychic spaces of empathy,” shares Bamieh, who founded the Palestine Hosting Society, a live art project established in 2018 to document Palestinian recipes at risk of disappearing. A previous iteration of Sour Things—entitled Sour Things: The Kitchen—was exhibited at NIKA Project Space prior to the Paris showcase.

For Berezina, while the Paris outpost represents vast potential, Dubai remains a vital space for igniting new conversations and serves as the birthplace of NIKA Project Space. “I find Dubai to be an interesting city located at the crossroads of different cultures while being open-minded towards new concepts, people, and projects,” she reflects. “I admire its cosmopolitan character.”

An Art Exhibition titled “The Writings of Today Are a Promise for Tomorrow” has opened at the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art, spotlighting the cultural similarities between Chinese and Arab traditions. Hosted by the Museums Commission of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture, the exhibition showcases over 30 artists’ work, emphasizing shared elements such as calligraphy and the concept of the garden.

Curated by Martina Koppel Yang, the exhibition explores how both Arab and Chinese cultures elevate calligraphy beyond a mere means of communication, viewing it as a spiritual and cultural practice. Additionally, gardens in both cultures are seen as spaces of contemplation and beauty, deeply connected to the natural and spiritual world.

Ibrahim Al-Sanousi, acting CEO of the Museums Commission, explained the significance of the museum as a space for rotating exhibitions. “We aim to integrate contemporary art into everyday life,” he stated. He also highlighted that this exhibition marks the beginning of a series of collaborations with different countries, fostering international dialogue. “This exhibition, focused on Chinese artists, is the beginning of a series of collaborations with countries worldwide, aimed at fostering cross-cultural dialogue and international exchange,” Al-Sanousi added.

Several featured artists spoke about their work and its connection to both cultures. Dexi Tian discussed how he incorporates elements of Saudi culture into his creations by reusing discarded objects found during his explorations of the city and desert. “I reassemble these objects into new creations that reflect this culture,” Tian noted.

Wang Du, a Chinese artist residing in France, explained the concept behind his sculpture, which is made from crumpled newspapers.

“It symbolizes how we consume news and information in our modern world,” he said. Wang emphasized the fleeting nature of news consumption, reflecting on how quickly we discard information after consuming it. “This piece serves as a monument to that short-lived nature of news,” he explained.

The exhibition delves into the intersection between calligraphy and the natural world, with gardens symbolizing creation and community in both cultures. The event also offers a forward-looking perspective, highlighting the synergy between past traditions and future possibilities.

The scenography, designed by Studio GGSV, enhances the visitor experience by guiding them through stages that reflect various themes, such as presence and absence, memory and imagination. Alongside works from the Donnersberg Collection and the Dslcollection, the exhibition also features site-specific pieces created in Saudi Arabia.

Notable artists such as French-Algerian Adel Abdessemed and Taiwanese Michael Lin are exhibiting in Saudi Arabia for the first time, further enriching the cultural dialogue presented in the exhibition.

Running until January 18, 2025, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the ongoing evolution of contemporary art, bridging cultural gaps and laying the groundwork for future artistic exchanges.

NYUAD Art Gallery will launch “Between the Tides: A Gulf Quinquennial,” a major exhibition exploring the evolving artistic landscape of the GCC. This significant event will feature 21 artists and collectives from across the region, including the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.

The quinquennial, scheduled to occur every five years, captures pivotal moments in the GCC’s art scene since 2019. It will showcase a diverse range of works, including paintings, videos, installations, and sculptures, reflecting the unique cultural and environmental attributes of the region.

Running until December 8, the exhibition not only highlights contemporary artistic practices but also commemorates the Art Gallery’s 10th anniversary.

Since its opening in 2014, the NYUAD Art Gallery has become a vital cultural venue on Saadiyat Island, elevating NYUAD’s status as a cultural beacon. It has played a crucial role in presenting both emerging and established artists and fostering a rich, international cultural dialogue.

“Between the Tides: A Gulf Quinquennial” is co-curated by Maya Allison, Executive Director of the NYUAD Art Gallery, and Duygu Demir, Art Gallery Curator and Research Assistant Professor. Their curatorial approach was shaped through extensive discussions with regional artists and curators, including Abdullah Al Mutairi, Ali Ismail Karimi, Aseel AlYaqoub, and Ayman Zedani. Instead of offering a comprehensive survey, this exhibition highlights key moments in the visual arts over the past five years.

Artists featured in the exhibition include Alia Ahmad, Abdulrahim Alkendi, Mohammad AlFaraj, Noor Al-Fayez, and many others, with collaborative works by Civil Architecture, Aseel AlYaqoub, Asaiel Al Saeed, Saphiya Abu Al-Maati, Yousef Awaad Hussein, Camille Zakharia, and Ali Ismail Karimi.

Maya Allison reflected on the gallery’s milestone and the quinquennial’s significance: “In the first decade of the NYUAD Art Gallery and Project Space, alongside our own development as a cultural institution, we have seen a proliferation of artists—thanks in part to the support of new initiatives across the Gulf—who are producing complex, nuanced, and provocative work, alongside their more seasoned peers. Expanded beyond a national arts landscape, this exhibition brings together and makes visible a larger shared ecosystem. A distinct chapter has opened in the region, and on the global stage.”

Duygu Demir added: “The title of the first iteration, ‘Between the Tides,’ reflects the Gulf’s deep connection to lunar rhythms and a sense of time shaped by natural patterns. The exhibition showcases a wide variety of artistic styles, from emerging voices to well-known figures, and explores important themes like urban growth, environmental change, heritage, identity, and representation. During the research phase of this show, our conversations with the curatorial interlocutors, as well as the exchanges with the artists, were immensely educational.”

Over the past decade, the gallery has featured a diverse array of exhibitions, alternating between global artists and explorations of Gulf art and history. Noteworthy past shows include “But We Cannot See Them” (2017), “Speculative Landscapes” (2019), and “Khaleej Modern” (2022), which have all contributed to its reputation as a leading cultural institution.

Christie’s, the renowned auction house, has announced a monumental event in the art world: the sale of the cherished collection of Norman Lear, the prolific television writer, producer, and political luminary. Lear, who passed away in December at the remarkable age of 101, left behind not just a legacy of groundbreaking television but also a distinguished assortment of modern art that encapsulates his passion for social commentary and cultural dialogue.

The auction, set to take place during Christie’s 20th Century Evening Sale on May 16, will feature seven select pieces from Lear’s collection, with additional works slated for the Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale, among others. Experts anticipate the entire collection to command upwards of $50 million, a testament to the enduring value of Lear’s artistic curation.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Norman Lear revolutionized the television landscape with groundbreaking shows like “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons.” Infusing his sitcoms with social realism and political commentary, Lear ignited a golden age of television, reshaping the American cultural conversation in the process. Beyond television, Lear was a fervent advocate for progressive causes, founding organizations like People for the American Way and spearheading initiatives such as Declare Yourself, aimed at promoting civic engagement.

Lear’s passion for art paralleled his commitment to social justice. A connoisseur of twentieth-century modern art, Lear cultivated friendships with artists like Robert Rauschenberg, whose work “Rodeo Palace (Spread)” from the “Spread” series will be among those offered at the auction. However, the crown jewel of Lear’s collection is David Hockney’s iconic Los Angeles landscape, “A Lawn Being Sprinkled,” estimated to fetch between $25 million to $35 million.

The collection also boasts pieces from luminaries such as Willem de Kooning, Ellsworth Kelly, and Joseph Cornell, reflecting Lear’s discerning taste and appreciation for artistic excellence. Notable among these is an Ed Ruscha word painting, “Truth” (1973), and a study of Roy Lichtenstein’s “I Love Liberty,” both emblematic of Lear’s unwavering commitment to advancing social causes.

Max Carter, Christie’s vice chairman of 20th and 21st Century Art, reflected on Lear’s collection, stating, “The art that Norman and Lyn collected together is, like his era-defining shows, marked as much by the exploration of ideas as by an exquisite sense of craft.”

Lear’s wife of over three decades, Lyn Davis Lear, an accomplished filmmaker and psychologist, played an integral role in shaping their shared artistic legacy. Elected to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s board of trustees in 2011, Lyn Davis Lear, alongside her husband and Cindy Horn, co-founded the Environmental Media Association, underscoring their commitment to environmental advocacy within the entertainment industry.

As the curtain rises on the auction of Norman Lear’s cherished collection, the world is reminded not only of his towering influence in the realms of television and politics but also of his profound impact on the world of art. Through his collection, Lear leaves behind a lasting testament to the power of creativity, social consciousness, and the enduring pursuit of justice.

The Khawla Art and Culture Foundation, located at the University of Navarra in Spain, recently held an artistic workshop titled “Creating a Monogram of Two Letters in Arabic Calligraphy”. The workshop was attended by distinguished university students, artists, specialists, and individuals interested in the art of Arabic calligraphy. The event was presented by Wissam Shawkat, an Iraqi artist and designer. The workshop is part of the Foundation’s efforts to promote cultural and artistic communication between people worldwide, to spread the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy, and to introduce its origins, trends, and details.

Sheikha Khawla bint Ahmed Khalifa Al Suwaidi, the Founder of the Foundation and wife of H.H. Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi, emphasized the essential role of calligraphy throughout the ages in documenting science and bringing people together through knowledge. She highlighted its contribution to opening doors for cultural dialogue between peoples and civilizations, enhancing communication between nations.

The Foundation’s primary goal is to enhance the value of Arabic calligraphy art by highlighting its originality, introducing its schools of thought and reviving them, and providing a cultural platform for those wishing to learn this art form. This platform will enable them to view cultural art in terms of its patterns and rules, as well as the new features of development and renewal in its formations over the centuries.

Sheikha Khawla further discussed the Foundation’s efforts to organize workshops and lectures in various countries worldwide, as well as their cooperation with local and international creators and artists. The aim is to enhance artistic, cultural, and civilizational interaction and provide the appropriate cultural platform for the exchange of ideas and creations. The Foundation aims to offer an opportunity for the public to enjoy the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy.

The Khawla Art and Culture Foundation is making significant efforts to spread the art of Arabic calligraphy and its cultural significance worldwide. By organizing workshops, lectures, and cultural events, the Foundation aims to create opportunities for artistic, cultural, and civilizational interaction among people and nations. Through its efforts, the Foundation is contributing to the preservation and development of the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy.
