In a significant move to bolster its film industry, the Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC), part of the Creative Media Authority (CMA), has announced an increase in its production rebate from 30% to a starting rate of 35%. This enhancement, effective from January 1, 2025, is aimed at attracting more strategic investments in the emirate’s film and television production sector.

The initiative seeks to draw more productions from Hollywood, Bollywood, and the Arab world, thereby stimulating the local economy through increased activity in transport, logistics, and accommodation. The initiative will also serve to promote Abu Dhabi as a prime filming destination, supporting sectors like tourism.

Mohamed Dobay, Acting Director General of CMA, remarked, “The importance of the film and production industry continues to grow under the vision and guidance of our wise leadership. We are proud to have been the first destination to offer a rebate scheme and are a regional pioneer with a proven track record. The updated financial rebate support will ensure we continue attracting international producers and directors from all over the world and become known as a leading destination for film and TV production both globally and regionally. This new rebate system is based off global best practice and will ensure we bring more of Abu Dhabi to the world through individual content consumption.”

He further explained that this enhancement is the first step in a comprehensive review aimed at making the creative industry more appealing, highlighting the sector’s vital contribution to the regional economy.

Sameer Al Jaberi, Head of ADFC, noted the success of the rebate scheme since its inception in 2013, stating, “Since launching our rebate scheme in 2013, more than 150 major productions have benefited from the offering. This generates a huge impact on our economy as independently verified research shows that for every dirham paid through the scheme, more than three dirhams flow back into the economy through hosting large scale productions in the emirate. Alongside the financial stimulus into the economy, visiting productions provide a tremendous learning and training opportunity for young creatives who are the nation’s storytellers of the future, this focus ensures a strong self-sustaining industry. As we near the release of the rebate on 1 January 2025, further information will be shared in the lead-up with our existing production industry database.”

The initiative aims to enhance an already robust ecosystem that comprises over 800 media companies and a talent pool of 1,000 freelancers, as well as young individuals seeking training and internship opportunities.

The Academy of Art and Arabic Heritage in London hosted its annual choir concert on Wednesday at the prestigious Barbican Hall. The event, which aimed to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Arab world, featured a captivating performance by a 50-voice choir that showcased the diverse musical traditions of the region.

Established in 2015, the choir is part of a series of initiatives launched by the Academy of Art and Arabic Heritage to promote and preserve Arab cultural heritage in Britain. The annual choir concert serves as a platform for talented artists to express themselves through the medium of music.

Under the guidance of renowned Syrian conductor Basel Saleh, the choir mesmerized the audience with their harmonious voices and impeccable synchronization. Saleh, who has previously collaborated with acclaimed musical entities such as the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Damon Albarn of Gorillaz, brought his wealth of experience to the forefront, ensuring a captivating and memorable performance.

The concert featured a delightful selection of songs from Sudan, Morocco, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq, providing a glimpse into the diverse musical traditions and rhythms of the Arab world. The repertoire included songs that highlighted the historical significance and cultural diversity of the region, offering the audience a unique and immersive experience.

In addition to the vocal performances, traditional instruments were also featured, adding depth and authenticity to the concert. The mesmerizing sounds of the tablah, oud, qanoun, and ney resonated throughout the hall, transporting the audience to the heart of the Arab musical heritage.

Attendees of the concert expressed their appreciation for the event and its impact on their connection to Arab culture. Emad Al-Abadi, one of the guests, shared his thoughts, saying, “This was the first time I felt so connected to Arab culture in London through the music we all know and which unites the Arab world. The truth is that as Arabs in Britain, we lose this connection.” His sentiments echoed the sentiments of many others who attended the concert.

Nashwan Al-Mosuli, another guest, praised the outstanding performances, stating, “The music today was excellent. We heard songs from all around the region, from Sudan, Morocco, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq.” The choir’s ability to bring together the diverse musical traditions of the Arab world in one concert left a lasting impression on the audience.

The annual choir concert organized by the Academy of Art and Arabic Heritage has undoubtedly succeeded in its mission to celebrate Arab cultural heritage in Britain. By bringing together talented artists, captivating performances, and a rich repertoire, the concert provided a platform for the audience to experience the vibrant tapestry of Arab music and deepen their connection with the cultural roots of the region.

“Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab World, 1950s-1980s” will be on display at Northwestern University’s Block Museum of Art from September 22 through December 4, 2022. The exhibition showcases works from the renowned Barjeel Art Foundation collection of mid-20th century abstract art from North Africa, West Asia, and the Arab diaspora. The Block Museum hosts the last stop of a journey that visits five American cities.

The 90 works in “Taking Shape”—paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints—reflect the variety of non-figurative artistic techniques that developed in the Arab world during a forty-year period and encourage the canonization of abstract art as well as a more globalized discussion of modernism.

The exhibition showcases numerous abstract trends that originated in the area and demonstrates how both lone artists and groups of artists struggled with concerns of cultural decolonization, authenticity, and identity.

According to Lisa Corrin, Ellen Philip Katz Executive Director, “‘Taking Shape’ is the next chapter in The Block’s examination of global modernisms, and the exhibition resonates with the museum’s goal to focus on understudied, ignored, and even suppressed art history.
