Da Silva’s vision for time&space was further fueled by a personal experience with a local homeware store. After admiring a new sofa on display, he was dismissed by a store owner who bluntly told him, “You won’t be able to afford it.” This interaction made Da Silva rethink the exclusivity of the design world. “I never want this space to feel like that,” he says, emphasizing his goal to create a welcoming, accessible environment.

Da Silva’s philosophy closely aligns with Habitat’s ethos of “democratizing design.” Both share the belief that good design should be available to all, regardless of socio-economic status. A collection of contemporary designs was showcased at the Casa-Estudio Max Cetto in Mexico City during the art week. The exhibition, titled Metamorphosis, displayed a mix of works by designers such as Eny Lee Parker, Doshi Levien, and Flos. This event took place in the modernist house, designed by Max Cetto in 1949.

Collaboration with Local and International Designers

Studio 84, a local design firm, curated the exhibition, collaborating with Milan-based CC-Tapis and Unno gallery. The collection featured pieces from well-known designers such as Caterina Moretti and Jeff Martin, alongside works from other talented creators.

Parker’s Clay Scan rugs, featured in the exhibition, were inspired by the texture of clay in motion. These monochrome rugs were placed throughout the house, highlighting the space’s architectural beauty. The rugs were created from dark and light browns, referencing the fluidity and malleability of clay.

In contrast, Doshi Levien’s Raag collection brought vibrant, colorful geometric patterns into the living room. The rugs were designed to evoke the structure of Indian classical music, adding a dynamic touch to the space.

Lighting and Furniture Pieces

Flos displayed a variety of archival lighting, enhancing the modernist design of the home. Additionally, Unno gallery exhibited new furniture pieces by Moretti and Martin, including metallic stools and cabinets with organic forms, blending contemporary and artistic elements.

Mexican designer César Núñez created a large stone sculpture for the front yard, adding a symbolic element to the exhibition. The sculpture, with its series of stone crosses and metallic details, echoed the theme of metamorphosis.

Unno gallery described the exhibition as a journey of transformation. The design and art explored the evolution of materials and ideas, offering new perspectives on existence. Visitors could also experience a unique fusion of contemporary design and modernist architecture, with a focus on creative and symbolic expressions.

Canadian design studio Ste Marie has crafted a tranquil and immersive space for Monos, a luggage brand influenced by the Japanese philosophy of mono no aware—an appreciation of fleeting beauty. Located on Ossington Street near Toronto’s Little Portugal, the store blends minimalism with natural elements, creating an atmosphere that evokes travel, discovery, and relaxation.

A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Design

Inspired by Portuguese pousadas, known for their warm hospitality, the store incorporates soft lighting, organic materials, and neutral tones. These elements work together to create a timeless and calming environment.

At the heart of the space, an olive tree stands in front of a vertical light box, extending onto the ceiling to enhance the store’s airy feel. Meanwhile, waxed plaster walls and split-faced cottonwood limestone monoliths add depth and texture. Together, these features establish a serene setting that invites customers to explore.

One of the most striking design elements is the central counter, crafted from Turkish rainbow onyx. Its rich blue-grey and orange veins complement the store’s neutral palette, adding warmth and visual interest. Additionally, a raised water feature flows from the counter toward the front of the store, cascading into a lower basin. This detail symbolizes the connection between nature and human experience, reinforcing Monos’ travel-inspired philosophy.

Thoughtful Details for an Immersive Experience

To maintain a cohesive look, the store’s beige color scheme extends across the ceiling, flooring, and walls. Cove lighting softly illuminates the stone shelves, which elegantly display Monos’ luggage and accessories. Italian Onice Striato Avorio stone frames the built-in display niches, enhancing the store’s refined aesthetic.

Meanwhile, full-length mirrors placed in the corners create a sense of spaciousness, while taupe curtains discreetly conceal back-of-house areas. These thoughtful details contribute to a seamless and immersive shopping experience, aligning with Monos’ commitment to mindful travel.

Ste Marie’s Signature Approach

Ste Marie is known for designing hospitality and retail spaces that tell a compelling story. Their past projects include a restaurant inspired by Hong Kong’s love motels and a bakery infused with warm, malty hues.

With Monos’ Toronto store, the studio once again delivers more than just a retail space—it offers a sensory experience where design, nature, and travel converge.

Saudi Arabia’s inaugural Interiors & Furniture Show (IFS) will take place at the iconic Jeddah Superdome next month, providing the design and fit-out industries with an unparalleled platform to exhibit products and services, explore opportunities, and strengthen regional and international networks.  

Organised by dmg events, IFS will run from 18-20 February and bring together global and local brands with interior designers, architects, project owners, and fit-out contractors from across Saudi Arabia’s vibrant Western Province. Cities such as Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah, and Tabuk are proving thriving hubs of design activity driven by government initiatives and giga-projects spanning hospitality, residential, and commercial developments worth in excess of US$1,452 billion.

Saudi Arabia is experiencing spiralling expansion of its hotel and accommodation sector, aligning with Vision 2030’s ambitious targets. By 2030, the Kingdom aims to deliver 320,000 new hotel rooms at a total development cost of US$37.8bn. Key cities such as Jeddah, Makkah, and Madinah are at the forefront of this growth with plans for new luxury hotels and resorts to cater to both domestic and international tourists. Currently, 66 per cent of Saudi Arabia’s hotel inventory is in the luxury segment, which is projected to grow to 72 per cent by 2030.

“Saudi Arabia is experiencing an unprecedented transformation, and Jeddah stands as its gateway to innovation and cultural heritage,” said Jasmeet Bakshi, Vice President of Design and Hospitality at dmg events. “As the pathway to Mecca and a cornerstone of Saudi Vision 2030, Jeddah is progressing with ambitious developments. From the Jeddah Central Project and the Red Sea Project to the iconic NEOM, skylines are being reshaped, and a new era of sustainable, innovative living is being ushered in and spearheading unmatched growth in the design and construction industries.”

With more than $74.8 billion in construction projects underway, combined with a dynamic religious tourism sector, Jeddah is becoming a canvas for bold architectural ideas, state-of-the-art interiors, and cutting-edge design, making it an ideal location for the three day trade show.

Some local exhibitors include Al Aqeel, Foamco, Al Guthmi, Al Rugaib Furniture, Creative Closets, Al Nassaj, Al Sourayi, Majestic, Damons, and Back Care whereas some international exhibitors include Standard Carpets, Trend Middle East, Surfaces Furnishing LLC, and Zuma Design Consultants.

IFS Jeddah will also feature an IFSpeaks where industry leaders, creative minds, and visionary thinkers will explore design’s past, present, and future through immersive sessions. The industry-led programme has been curated with input from a steering committee of some of Saudi Arabia’s most eminent and emerging interior designers and architects.

The line-up so far includes Amani Al Ibrahim, Partner and Executive Director of Kristina Zanic Consultants; Dr Karima Hemida, Head of Design at Jeddah International College; avant garde architect Ma’an Bajnaid from M3N DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE; and distinguished Saudi interior designer Iman Abuljadayel, from In Detail Design Center who has already made a significant mark in the world of luxury design. Each will explore among other things heritage-inspired style modernity, innovative fabrication such as 3D printing, space transformation through textiles, and sustainable design trends shaping the future.

Each day, we will delve into different design facets. Day One will celebrate Saudi heritage and explore how traditional aesthetics influence modern interiors, while Day Two will focus on the present, where we delve in innovative flexible workspaces, redefining human living and the use of AI. The final day will look to the future, empowering Saudi’s next generation of designers and building the future of Jeddah.

More than 5,000 influential buyers along with 100 exhibitors and specifiers are expected to attend IFS Jeddah, representing a range of key expansion sectors such as hospitality, residential, and commercial interiors.

Tokyo-based architecture studio Keiji Ashizawa Design has completed an elegant, minimalist showroom and office for Mariha, a renowned jewellery and fashion brand. The design embraces a calming, neutral colour palette and incorporates natural materials to create a space that functions both as a showroom and an office, while evoking the warmth and comfort of a private home.

A Space Crafted for Warmth and Elegance

The design concept centers around creating a welcoming environment that feels both intimate and functional. Keiji Ashizawa, the founder of the studio, explained: “The space was crafted to exude the inviting warmth of a private salon, creating a home-like ambience to welcome cherished guests.” He further elaborated, “The intimate ambience is thoughtfully crafted through a cohesive design approach, combining meticulous finishing, furniture placement, and refined styling.”

Neutral Tones and Natural Materials

As visitors step through a narrow corridor bordered by a large plaster wall, they are greeted by a spacious living area that doubles as a showroom. The space is furnished with plush seating and showcases Mariha’s exquisite jewellery. The design is deliberately understated, using oak furniture and neutral tones that highlight the sparkle and elegance of the jewellery on display.

The studio chose refined materials and a restrained colour scheme to emphasize the brand’s aesthetic. “The materials were chosen to align with the aesthetic of existing showrooms and shops, while incorporating more furniture to evoke the warmth of a cosy living space,” Ashizawa said. Furniture, including plush sofas and oak tables from Karimoku Case, is complemented by gold accents and soft carpeted floors, creating an inviting atmosphere.

A Harmonious Design with Attention to Detail

An important feature of the design is the large oak display case that spans an entire wall, beautifully showcasing a curated selection of jewellery pieces arranged by interior stylist Yumi Nakata. This attention to detail extends to every element of the space, from the textiles to the furniture layout. Ashizawa noted, “Each textile was chosen through the conversations with the client, carefully considering its harmony with the curtains, carpets, and overall tone.”

The design also plays with textures and soft monochromatic gradients, ensuring a serene atmosphere that complements the showroom’s minimalist style.

Office Area with a Central Oak Table

Adjacent to the living space is a compact office area, accessed through wooden doors. The office is anchored by a large wooden table with gold legs, surrounded by matching chairs. This minimalist design reflects the brand’s aesthetic while maintaining a functional and stylish workspace.

A story of “Italian Excellence” born in 1948, Minotti – the family-owned company – is internationally recognised for its contemporary indoor and outdoor furniture in the residential, hospitality and yachting segments.

Minotti, renowned for its elegant Made in Italy designs for more than 75 years, strengthens its multi-year presence in the Middle East with the opening of its first flagship store in Dubai in collaboration with the long-standing local partner Al Tayer Insignia.

Inspired by the architecture of a villa, the showroom is located in the vibrant heart of the exclusive Jumeirah district and spreads over two levels, covering a total area of approximately 900 square metres. The opening expands on Minotti’s existing global presence in 80 countries through a network of more than 60 flagship stores and over 300 qualified dealers.

Conceived by the creative department of the company Minotti Studio, the interior design project reveals itself as a refined oasis, which combines the building’s original elements with the distinctive Minotti style, in an exhibition itinerary that turns into an engaging design experience.

“The GCC are one of the most relevant markets for our brand” comments Renato Minotti, co-CEO of Minotti “and the opening of the first flagship store in Dubai is a decisive achievement for our strategic and business objectives, as well as for the expansion of our network.”

“We are extremely proud of this opening in partnership with Al Tayer Insignia, with whom we share values and aesthetic, allowing us to be even closer to local customers. Dubai is an international and dynamic city, with consumers always looking for unique products, made with the finest Italian quality and fond of Minotti’s style” adds Roberto Minotti, Minotti’s co-CEO.

The façade is characterised by a large portal that welcomes visitors into an outdoor lobby, inviting them to immerse themselves in a sophisticated scenario with high ceilings and filled with natural light filtering through large windows.

Once inside, the majestic steel columns, a chestnut-coloured lacquered fireplace and a unique winter garden convey a dynamic yet balanced rhythm to the living, lounge and dining areas: a scenographic space that highlights the furnishings on show, including the novelties of the 2024 Collection, such as the modular seating systems Yves by Hannes Peer and Supermoon by Giampiero Tagliaferri, along with some of the brand’s best-sellers.

Every detail of the set-up is taken care of with sartorial attention, in a skilful combination of straight and sinuous lines and in a vivid interplay of light and shadow enriched by a wealth of materials and colours: moka-coloured oak panelling contrasts with silver Iranian travertine, steel with satin and reflective chrome finishes, and concrete, creating a palette of brown and grey shades that expresses great sophistication.

While the ground floor reinterprets the brand’s values in an original way, the first floor faithfully reproduces the interior of a residential space, where living, dining areas along with a master bedroom recreate intimate and charming atmospheres. On the same floor there is also a wide meeting room and two private areas for the creation of interior design projects.
