Visionary contemporary visual artist Kristel Bechara, a trailblazer in integrating NFT technology, is set to unveil her latest masterpiece, ‘The Voyageur,’ at Gallery 7/40, the beachfront establishment at The Club Palm West Beach on January 11, 2024. This exclusive exhibition, known for its innovative use of mediums, marks a pioneering exploration into the convergence of traditional and digital art.

Originally unveiled as a large-scale canvas painting at Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown in December 2022, ‘The Voyageur’ swiftly garnered the attention of a private collector. From this original creation, Bechara has crafted five digital artworks, each a fragment of the initial piece, weaving together narratives born within the painting. Recognized for her expertise in both traditional and digital art, Kristel Bechara aims to demonstrate the intrinsic value of digital art through this unique project.

Bechara, celebrated for her mastery in both traditional and digital art, seeks to emphasize the intrinsic value of digital art through ‘The Voyageur.’ The project showcases her unique skill sets and challenges the absence of canvas and paint, emphasizing the authenticity and value of digital artwork.

“I always like to blend and combine the disciplines of traditional and digital art, which can be seen in the Voyageur,” highlights Kristel Bechara.

At its core, ‘The Voyageur’ is a celebration of femininity. Bechara, renowned for depicting women and beauty in diversity, extends these themes into this project by introducing a singular female character symbolizing Equality, Empowerment, and Autonomy. Departing from the norm of predominantly male explorers, Bechara depicts a female explorer, challenging conventional narratives.

“I wanted to honor the spirit of the adventurous traveler, who lives beyond the fear of the unknown and navigates fantastical places that exist in realms of their own. She is a feminine entity who is unbound and free to go wherever her heart and curiosity guide her. I wanted to portray her as someone who can overcome any obstacle that tried to slow her down,” says artist Kristel Bechara.

Each artwork in the series represents an individual exploration of the various elements at play in the original painting: ‘The Contemplative Voyageur,’ ‘The Arabesque City of the Future,’ ‘The Mysterious Nine-Tailed Fox (Kitsune),’ ‘The Majestic Vessels of the Skies,’ and ‘The Majestic Vessel of the Seas.’ Viewers will find themselves drawn into a captivating journey, transcending fears, doubts, and limitations.

In collaboration with Gallery 7/40, Bechara extends this captivating voyage to Dubai’s community with a special soirée on January 11th. The venue, inspired by Antoni Gaudi’s architectural designs, resonates with Bechara’s renowned style, integrating innovative mediums, dynamic patterns, and expressive colours set against a monochromatic background.

This event also serves as the announcement for Bechara’s upcoming solo show in collaboration with Kanvas Gallery, inviting art enthusiasts and curious minds to the vernissage on February 22nd, coinciding with Art Dubai. Curated specifically for the region’s largest art fair, this exceptional exhibition seamlessly aligns advanced technology with the narrative of Kristel Bechara’s artistic odyssey at Kanvas Gallery, a new media art hub, with the goal of captivating a diverse audience.

‘A Symphony of Light and Shadows’ is a retrospective exhibition showcasing Bechara’s art in a new dimension. Embracing modern technologies, she offers viewers an innovative yet accessible experience in our digital era. This retrospective exhibition is a testament to Kristel Bechara’s commitment to pushing artistic boundaries and creating immersive experiences for her audience.

In the quiet and unassuming village of Rejingtal, nestled deep within Odisha’s tribal heartland, a unique painting exhibition recently unfolded, showcasing the remarkable talents of artists whose daily lives are far removed from the conventional art world. These artists were not seasoned professionals; they were predominantly farmers and homemakers, their artistic skills hidden within the confines of their villages. The Odisha Lalit Kala Academy (OLKA) embarked on a transformative journey from Bhubaneswar, the bustling capital city, to Rejingtal in the Rayagada district, nearly 400 kilometers away, to bring this magical exhibition to life. The result was nothing short of breathtaking.
At the heart of this exhibition were Idital paintings, a traditional Saura tribal mural art form created by the Saura community. These paintings, made using rice powder on a backdrop of red oxide, hold immense cultural and ritual significance. There are sixty-two different types of Idital, each designed for specific occasions or rituals, serving as a means for the community to pay homage to their deities, ancestors, and to ensure the well-being of their villages. The Idital paintings depict a wide array of subjects, including village agriculture, hunting, harvesting, hills, tribal lifestyles, marriages, dances, worship of mud deities, various birds, animals, and insects.

Padma Shri Sudarshan Pattnaik, the renowned sand artist and president of OLKA, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Idital paintings are widely appreciated in the art world. Some Iditals adorn living rooms in cities. We wanted to see how Iditals are painted by their original creators in their own backyard. That was how the idea of holding a live exhibition in Rejingtal came through.”

OLKA recognized the artistic prowess of the Saura community and provided each artist with Rs. 10,000 for their mural paintings. This opportunity allowed these farmers and homemakers to showcase their talents to the world.

The painting exhibition, which commenced on September 28th and concluded on October 4th, featured over 50 Saura artists who painted their own houses with Iditals—a tradition they have upheld for generations. The entire village transformed into an art gallery, leaving a profound impression on all who visited.

Mr. Pattnaik commented on the impact of the exhibition, saying, “The exhibition will surely ignite the minds of Saura painters who have remained confined to their villages and encourage them to look for markets to showcase their talents. The Saura have realized that their Iditals are not a dying art. There are many admirers of the art form.”

This unique and culturally significant exhibition not only celebrated the artistic heritage of the Saura community but also provided a platform for these talented individuals to receive the recognition they deserve, sparking hope and inspiration for future generations of Saura artists.

In this rapidly digital age, where screens and technology seem to dominate our lives, it’s crucial to take a moment and reflect on the enduring beauty and relevance of sculptures. As we immerse ourselves in the virtual world, sculptures provide us with a tangible connection to art and history, creating a sense of relatability that resonates with our humanity.

In the digital era, we often find ourselves drawn to the convenience and allure of digital art forms, such as computer-generated graphics and virtual reality experiences. While these innovations have their merits, they can never fully replace the raw emotional impact of encountering a beautifully crafted sculpture in person. The tangible presence of a sculpture can evoke emotions that are difficult to replicate in a virtual space.

Sculptures, in their physicality, offer a unique and intimate experience. The ability to walk around a sculpture, observing its form and texture from different angles, allows us to engage with the artwork on a deeper level. It sparks curiosity and invites contemplation, pulling us away from the fast-paced digital world and encouraging us to slow down and appreciate the details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Moreover, sculptures possess an inherent connection to history and culture. From ancient civilizations to contemporary artists, sculptures have been a timeless form of expression, capturing the essence of societies and their beliefs. In the midst of constant digital change, sculptures serve as a reminder of our shared heritage, linking us to the past and grounding us in the present.

While the digital age has undoubtedly expanded the reach of art, making it accessible to a global audience, it has also posed challenges for sculptures and their place in contemporary society. The vast online galleries and virtual exhibitions have made it easier for digital art to gain popularity, sometimes overshadowing the enduring significance of sculptures.

However, it is crucial to remember that art is not a competition between traditional and digital forms but rather a celebration of diversity and creativity. Embracing both digital art and sculptures enriches our artistic experiences, allowing us to appreciate the old and new side by side.

As we navigate the digital landscape, we must actively seek opportunities to engage with sculptures in real-life settings. Visiting art museums, outdoor installations, and public spaces with sculptures can reignite our connection to art and infuse a sense of wonder into our lives.

Furthermore, artists today are also embracing technology to breathe new life into sculptures. Digital sculpting tools and 3D printing techniques have opened up new avenues for artists to experiment and create innovative works that bridge the gap between the physical and digital realms.

In conclusion, while the digital age offers us exciting possibilities in the world of art, we must not overlook the enduring beauty and relevance of sculptures. Sculptures provide a tangible and relatable connection to art and history, inviting us to slow down and appreciate the essence of human creativity. Embracing both traditional and digital art forms enriches our artistic experiences and keeps the spirit of sculptures alive in the rapidly digitalized age. Let us cherish and celebrate sculptures as a testament to our shared cultural heritage and an inspiration for generations to come.
