After graduating from art college with a BFA in Fashion Illustration she began her career as a fashion designer. After a successful 15 year career in the fashion industry, she took time off to raise her two daughters. She began to paint again when her youngest daughter left for college and used her knowledge of fashion, women, and the human figure to develop her style. With the help of social media, art fairs, and galleries each year she gained more and more exposure for her work. She takes great pride in her studio! When she began to paint again she worked out of her home and always dreamed of having a large studio, outside of her home, that was solely to create her work. She never thought that would happen but in September of 2019, it did. She moved out of her home studio and into a building with other artists located 10 minutes from where she lives. Nothing makes her feel more like a professional artist than having her studio. Having a place where you can make your art is something a lot of artists dream about. Studios are like heaven, once you enter you wouldn’t want to leave.
The pandemic did not affect her practice so it was business as usual for her. Since all shows and art fairs have been cancelled it meant less time to be able to network with other artists and galleries. She had tried to make an effort to connect with other art professionals virtually. Since artists spend so much time alone this is a very important aspect of the business and during the pandemic, without shows, is impossible. She was even able to connect with a new gallery for representation. Otherwise, she did not create any special projects during the pandemic as she has been busy with her usual work and commissions.
Some of her wise words for the hardworking struggling artists, “If you want to be a full time, professional artist you have to be prepared to work hard and treat it like a business. It is not just creating all day. I do everything like packing and shipping, social media, creating and managing my website, and working with galleries and private collectors. It is a lot of work and at times very unglamorous work.” According to her art gives a student the chance to express themselves in a way they may not have thought possible before.
She doesn’t have one single inspiration. She loves contemporary figurative art and is inspired by other artists who came from professional backgrounds like hers. Two of her favourites are Michael Carson and Gabriel Moreno. People who inspire her are Ellen Von Unwerthe and Peter Lindbergh.
