GR Gallery is proud to present Hidden Lights, a solo exhibition by Italian visual artist Geppy Pisanelli. Following his success in the 2023 group exhibition Dreaming Awake, Pisanelli now introduces a new series that delves into the relationship between nature and human-made structures.

Through this collection, Pisanelli explores the visual interplay of natural elements like water beds, trees, and mountains with artificial components such as shelters and artificial lighting. By placing these objects in unexpected settings, the artist challenges the viewer’s perception of space and reality.

A Thought-Provoking Artistic Juxtaposition

Each piece in Hidden Lights evokes a sense of alienation, both visually and intellectually. Even the exhibition title itself is an oxymoron—light, commonly linked to visibility and illumination, is instead described as “hidden.” This intentional contrast reflects the deeper complexity of the artist’s vision.

Pisanelli carefully balances composition, shapes, and subject matter to create an intricate layering of light and shadow. His approach allows viewers to experience his artwork beyond mere aesthetics, drawing them into a thought-provoking dialogue about human perception.

Beyond the play of light, these paintings also reflect the artist’s perspective on human existence. While the scenes depict nature, they also symbolize internal emotions. Pisanelli portrays an external space that mirrors an internal one—illustrating solitude, resilience, and transformation.

Exploring Human Nature Amid Global Challenges

Pisanelli refers to his works as “threshold images”—a term that describes the transition between reality and artistic interpretation. His paintings encourage viewers to reflect on societal challenges such as pandemics, migration, and climate change. By merging visual storytelling with metaphorical depth, his work resonates with audiences on both personal and universal levels.

Reflecting on his inspirations, Pisanelli draws from literary influences as well. He references David H. Lawrence’s 1928 words:

“Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes.”

These words encapsulate the spirit of renewal amidst adversity—a theme central to Pisanelli’s work.

A Journey Through Metaphor and Meaning

Pisanelli’s artistry extends beyond realistic imagery. While his paintings may initially appear as direct representations of landscapes, they gradually unveil hidden layers of meaning. He invites viewers to look beyond the obvious, encouraging a deeper engagement with the expressive power of painting.

By challenging traditional boundaries of pictorial composition, Hidden Lights pushes the limits of visual storytelling. This immersive exhibition compels audiences to reconsider their understanding of light, space, and human experience.

Inloco Gallery announces the opening of its new season under the theme “Lost Tradition” scrutinizing the role of traditions in the contemporary world. The featured artists reflect on the reevaluation of heritage, emphasizing its evolving significance and exploring the nostalgia for ways of life that fade with time. The season’s launch is marked by the unveiling of VERTICAL HORIZON / 361 DEGREES, a project that unfolds through 3 interconnected components: an art intervention, a live performance, and a solo exhibition by internationally renowned artist Karim Jabbari.

Project Structure and Timeline

January 5, 2025 – Art Intervention in Al Satwa
The project’s narrative commences with an art intervention in Dubai’s historic Al Satwa district, where contemporary Arab artists Khalil Abdulwahid and Karim Jabbari explore the delicate balance between tradition and modernity. Guided by a leading expert in Arabic and multilingual typography Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès, the artists engage in a dérive – an unplanned single-day urban exploration – to immerse in street life and local conversations, intentionally seeking out traces of lost ways of living, while documenting their practice. The intervention captures the neighborhood’s stories, textures, and fading memories, offering a poetic reflection on its transformation. The art intervention draws inspiration from a 2024 project Sikka by Emirati urbanist and scholar Dr. Khaled Alawadi, highlighting the cultural significance of traditional alleyways, as hubs of social interaction and community life.

January 29, 2025, 7:00 PM – Live Performance and Video Art Screening
The narrative deepens through a dynamic live performance combining light, calligraphy, video art, and music. Jabbari will create light calligraphy in real time, with his evolving artwork projected on a large screen. Simultaneously, Abdulwahid’s video art will showcase Al Satwa’s disappearing cultural fabric, blending documentary footage with artistic intervention. The performance will be accompanied by vocal and musical improvisation by Faisal Salah (FACESOUL), whose music will become a featured show theme.

Karim Jabbari’s calligraphy artwork blending traditional and modern design at his solo exhibition in Inloco Gallery.

January 29, 2025, 8:00 PM – Solo Exhibition by Karim Jabbari
Featuring works created during his residency in Dubai, the show reflects on the artist’s engagement with tradition, urban nostalgia, and the reinterpretation of cultural heritage. Collectors and friends of the gallery are invited to an exclusive preview event to explore Jabbari’s innovative approach to blending ancient calligraphic traditions with contemporary design.

Ana Mendieta would have turned 76 this year, a milestone that brings to mind what new works she might have created and what legacy she would have continued to forge in contemporary art. A current exhibition at Museo Jumex in Mexico City, titled “Siluetas sobre maleza” (“Silhouettes in the Undergrowth”), reflects on the lasting influence of Mendieta’s groundbreaking work and highlights artists who carry forward her vision.

The exhibition assembles six Latin American women artists whose pieces echo themes central to Mendieta’s oeuvre: the intersection of the body with nature, feminism, ecology, and anti-colonialism. Among these artists is Vivian Suter, born just months after Mendieta and carrying a career that contrasts sharply with Mendieta’s tragically truncated one, believed to be the result of a suspected femicide ruled a suicide. This juxtaposition serves as a reminder of the creative potential cut short by violence.

Mendieta, who was born in Cuba in 1948 and later lived in exile in the United States, was renowned for her “Siluetas” series. In these works, she imprinted her body into the land, forming silhouettes as if reconnecting herself to the earth in an attempt to counter her sense of displacement. The exhibition pays homage to this connection between body and earth, inviting viewers to witness how it endures in the work of Suter and others.

Suter, an Argentine artist with Swiss heritage, sets the stage with monumental, unstretched canvases stained with mud and dyes, suspended like garments on a rack. These pieces guide the viewer through the gallery space, weaving through a maze of textures and muted colors. The gallery’s layout suggests movement, compelling visitors to engage with the environment in an active, physical manner.

A powerful centerpiece of the show is Mendieta’s 1975 Super 8 film “Alma Silueta en Fuego” (“Soul Silhouette on Fire”), which depicts a fabric silhouette, shaped like Mendieta’s body with arms outstretched, burning for three minutes in the dirt. The figure’s slow disintegration into ash acts as a poignant metaphor for both the impermanence and resilience of art, echoing themes of transformation, destruction, and rebirth. In the wake of the recent U.S. election, this piece evokes a complex interpretation—a portrait of enduring feminist defiance that continues to blaze even as it turns to ashes.

Other works in the exhibition further explore the dialogue between the personal and the political. Frieda Toranzo Jaeger’s “Times Come to an End” (2021) is a polyptych that reimagines Hieronymus Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights,” transforming it into a depiction of apocalyptic hedonism, with embroidered scenes of pleasure juxtaposed against an orange sky—a symbol of collapse and renewal.

Nohemí Pérez’s charcoal drawings also intertwine macro and micro narratives. Her monumental depictions of the Catatumbo region in Colombia capture the reality of forests ablaze, a reflection of both ecological and human turmoil. Within the smoldering landscape, tiny, almost imperceptible embroideries illustrate scenes of migration, illegal oil extraction, and conflict, symbolizing the devastating impact of these crises. The owls and deer, already marked by soot, serve as haunting reminders that the crisis has escalated beyond the early warnings.

“Siluetas sobre maleza” is not just an exhibition; it’s a testament to the enduring relevance of Ana Mendieta’s legacy and the artists who continue to speak the language of nature, body, and resistance.

BeautyEurasia Exhibition Attracted Great Interest with 16,683 Visitors from 116 Countries

Organized by ICA Events, the 19th International Cosmetics, Beauty and Hair Exhibition, BeautyEurasia contributed to the creation of productive collaborations and the development of the sector with the participation of leading companies and countries in the sector. The exhibition, held between 12-14 June, brought together the products, services and technologies of manufacturers and suppliers from around the world at Istanbul Expo Center.

BeautyEurasia, the leading sector and cooperation platform of Türkiye and Eurasia, brought together over 500 professional hosted buyers from 60 countries, primarily from Europe and the Middle East, as part of this year’s VIP hosted buyer program. Thanks to this program, exhibitors had the opportunity to meet with a large number of international high-level buyers and establish business development and partnership agreements. 467 exhibitors from 28 countries, especially from countries such as Russia, France, Bulgaria, Greece, India, Italy, Switzerland, Ukraine, Japan and China, and 969 brands from 38 countries gathered on the same platform.

BeautyEurasia, held by ICA Events, which organizes exhibitions for the locomotive sectors of the Turkish economy, attracted great interest for 3 days. The exhibition hosted a total of 16,683 visitors from 116 countries, 29.2% of whom were international visitors. The exhibition reached the highest rate in the history of BeautyEurasia with 4,877 international visitors. The most key product lines of the sector such as personal care products, perfume and deodorants, hair salon equipment, colour cosmetics, cleaning and hygiene products, baby hygiene products, nail care products, haircare products, packaging and labelling machines, wig-eyebrow-eyelash, cosmetic laser equipment were exhibited in BeautyEurasia. During the exhibition, where exhibitors and buyers meet and form business partnerships, visitors had the opportunity to experience various product lines, especially makeup, nail extensions and skin care applications.

BeautyEurasia, this year as well, made a great contribution to Türkiye’s economy

Evaluating the performance of the exhibition this year, Filiz Mehmedova, BeautyEurasia Exhibition Director, expressed her views as follows: “BeautyEurasia provides a productive platform for the promotion of new ideas and products by discussing and exchanging information on the global and regional development areas of the sector in Türkiye and the Eurasia region. BeautyEurasia, which has a mission beyond providing a basis for new cooperation and export opportunities, successfully continued to draw the road map for the sector this year. Hosting new export opportunities, BeautyEurasia received intense demand and great interest from abroad this year. Exhibitors and visitors got informed about the techniques and the products on exhibition booths where trends and key points about hair, makeup, nail, laser hair removal and personal care being shared.”Stating that Türkiye stands out as an important production country in cosmetics and attracted more attention from exhibitors with the increase in exports in the sector in the first quarter, Mehmedova said, “In the cosmetics sector, whose exports increased by 2.9 percent in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 668.7 million dollars, BeautyEurasia continued to create new business, partnership and export opportunities for Türkiye with its strong regional network. This year, BeautyEurasia occupied a space 30% larger than last year’s, providing exhibitors with the opportunity to closely observe the strategies and innovations of the companies. Thus, the exhibition has made a significant contribution to the acceleration and growth of the sector’s dynamics this year as well. As Türkiye’s only cosmetics exhibition for 19 years, we have been pleased to continue contributing to the development of the sector and supporting the strengthening of Türkiye’s position in the international arena in this field.”

Exhibition will run from 17th October until 10th November 2024

Mestaria Gallery is proud to present the latest exhibition by renowned Bahraini artist Areej Rajab, titled “Interwoven,” running from 17th October to 10th November 2024. The exhibition invites viewers to experience an artistic and therapeutic play of colours and emotions where the intricate patterns of human behaviour are delicately overlapped with the rhythms of nature.

Born and raised in Bahrain, Areej Rajab was drawn into the world of art from a young age. While her academic path initially led her to study business and general management at the University of Bahrain. Her passion for art eventually steered her to the London College of Art, where her creative talents fully flourished. Areej’s work has since resonated with collectors and enthusiasts across the Middle East and the UK, where she has exhibited extensively.

Interwoven lies in Areej’s expression of the deep connection between nature and human behaviour. Through her artwork, she reveals the intricate beauty of natural forms and how they mirror the complexities of human emotions. By layering colours, Areej symbolically reflects how human emotions and experiences intertwine, much like patterns in nature, echoing the masterfully harmonious designs found in nature. As she explains, “I find inspiration in nature as it is the purest source of colour. My focus is on colour combinations and how they blend and overlap rather than just colour itself, much like how human behaviour and emotions often intertwine and influence one another. Different cultures can interpret colour in various ways, which adds another layer of meaning to my work”. Her paintings, with their fluid layers of paint, brushstrokes, and intentional lines, evoke a sense of movement and freedom, reflecting the rhythms and patterns found in both nature and human emotions.

Unlike artists who capture and document present moments to reflect current experiences and complexities they navigate, Areej’s paintings reflect a place where she aspires to be — expressing an optimistic and hopeful vision of the world. Through her translation of nature, she shifts perspectives to convey joy and optimism, using a carefully chosen colour palette, weaving a spectrum of colours, with each hue and shade meticulously chosen to inspire specific emotions and moods. She leaves her paintings untitled, believing that each viewer should have the freedom to interpret and connect with the artwork in their own way.

This exhibition at Mestaria Gallery invites guests to become part of an emotional moment, where each encounter creates a unique connection, “interwoven” between individual and canvas, leaving a lasting impression on Dubai’s art scene. Don’t miss being an added story to those brushstrokes of beauty.

This acquisition marks a significant milestone for Ibrahim, a prominent figure in UAE contemporary art, celebrated for his abstract and organic sculptures.
