In a bold move, Pace Gallery has welcomed the talented British painter, Pam Evelyn, to its prestigious roster, making her the youngest artist ever to join the gallery. At just 27 years old, Evelyn’s inclusion in the esteemed art institution represents a remarkable achievement for the emerging artist, whose unique approach to abstraction has been turning heads in the art world.

Unlike many of Pace Gallery’s established artists, known for their well-established market followings, Evelyn is a rising star fresh out of earning her master’s degree last year. The gallery’s decision to take on such a young talent is a testament to Evelyn’s exceptional artistic prowess and the potential that she brings to the art scene.

Evelyn’s artistic style is rooted in abstraction, a genre that allows her to express her creativity through a diverse range of techniques. She often works with layering and removing paint over extended periods, resulting in intricate and captivating pieces. Additionally, she creates works on paper that showcase her ability to produce art with speed and spontaneity.

Speaking about her artistic process, Evelyn explained, “My practice is rooted in instinct and impulse. I’m very attentive to the patterns of structure and color that materialize in each work…it’s a process I like to refer to as ‘a mist rising.'” Her intuitive and innovative approach to art has garnered her significant attention and acclaim in recent years.

Evelyn’s artistic journey has been nothing short of impressive. Prior to joining Pace Gallery, she showcased her talent in a solo exhibition at Peres Projects in Berlin in 2021, followed by another solo show at the Approach gallery in London in 2022. Additionally, her work has been featured in group exhibitions at prominent galleries such as Baert Gallery in Los Angeles and Massimodecarlo in Paris.

Despite her relatively short time in the art world, Evelyn’s pieces have already gained recognition at auctions. One of her paintings, produced in 2020, even before she completed her master’s degree, was sold at Phillips in 2022 for a remarkable £81,900, more than six times its high estimate. Such success at auction further solidifies her position as an artist with immense potential and promise.

Pace Gallery’s decision to add Pam Evelyn to its roster is part of the gallery’s recent trend of embracing emerging talent and diversifying its artist base. Over the past year, the gallery has been actively expanding its lineup, welcoming artists like Grada Kilomba, Hank Willis Thomas, and including the estates of Yoo Yongkuk and John Wesley.

Art enthusiasts and critics alike eagerly await Evelyn’s first show with Pace Gallery, set to take place at its London space this September. With her unique artistic vision and remarkable achievements at such a young age, there’s no doubt that Pam Evelyn’s journey in the art world is just beginning, and her addition to Pace Gallery’s roster is a significant milestone in her promising career.

The global art world had long considered Paris a shadow of its former self, with a storied past but a lackluster future. However, the 2023 edition of Art Paris, the annual modern and contemporary art fair, demonstrated that the City of Lights had successfully shaken off this reputation. The event received 350 applications for 134 spots, and prestigious foreign galleries are opening locations in Paris, making it a top destination for art dealers and collectors in Europe. This dynamic art landscape results from a concerted effort between French artists, gallerists, and private foundations, according to Art Paris Director Guillaume Piens.

The rising status of Paris in the art world is due to a new generation of forward-thinking young gallerists, like rising star Anne-Laure Buffard. After working at the established Parisian contemporary art gallery Galerie Nathalie Obadia for 11 years, Buffard ventured out in 2022. Her gallery uses a hybrid model, with a showroom in an apartment in central Paris and exhibitions in shared spaces or rented galleries. She also collaborates with critics and artists to create booklets for each show.

However, there is concern among French gallerists, big and small, regarding a new EU tax directive set to take effect in January 2025, which would raise the VAT tax on artwork sold in France from 5.5% to 20%. Small galleries like Buffard’s fear that it could threaten France’s most fragile art scene, which is also the richest and most enjoyable. Even established galleries like Galerie Templon are worried that the tax would penalize sales of imported art in France and give galleries in Switzerland or London an unfair advantage. France’s Professional Committee of Art Galleries is in talks with the government to find a solution to protect the art market from a higher tax rate, with a decision expected by autumn.

Despite these concerns, Art Paris is a testament to the revitalization of the Paris art scene, and the city’s rising place in the global market. The event is open to the public at Paris’ Grand Palais Éphémère from 30 March to 2 April.
