An Art Exhibition titled “The Writings of Today Are a Promise for Tomorrow” has opened at the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art, spotlighting the cultural similarities between Chinese and Arab traditions. Hosted by the Museums Commission of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture, the exhibition showcases over 30 artists’ work, emphasizing shared elements such as calligraphy and the concept of the garden.

Curated by Martina Koppel Yang, the exhibition explores how both Arab and Chinese cultures elevate calligraphy beyond a mere means of communication, viewing it as a spiritual and cultural practice. Additionally, gardens in both cultures are seen as spaces of contemplation and beauty, deeply connected to the natural and spiritual world.

Ibrahim Al-Sanousi, acting CEO of the Museums Commission, explained the significance of the museum as a space for rotating exhibitions. “We aim to integrate contemporary art into everyday life,” he stated. He also highlighted that this exhibition marks the beginning of a series of collaborations with different countries, fostering international dialogue. “This exhibition, focused on Chinese artists, is the beginning of a series of collaborations with countries worldwide, aimed at fostering cross-cultural dialogue and international exchange,” Al-Sanousi added.

Several featured artists spoke about their work and its connection to both cultures. Dexi Tian discussed how he incorporates elements of Saudi culture into his creations by reusing discarded objects found during his explorations of the city and desert. “I reassemble these objects into new creations that reflect this culture,” Tian noted.

Wang Du, a Chinese artist residing in France, explained the concept behind his sculpture, which is made from crumpled newspapers.

“It symbolizes how we consume news and information in our modern world,” he said. Wang emphasized the fleeting nature of news consumption, reflecting on how quickly we discard information after consuming it. “This piece serves as a monument to that short-lived nature of news,” he explained.

The exhibition delves into the intersection between calligraphy and the natural world, with gardens symbolizing creation and community in both cultures. The event also offers a forward-looking perspective, highlighting the synergy between past traditions and future possibilities.

The scenography, designed by Studio GGSV, enhances the visitor experience by guiding them through stages that reflect various themes, such as presence and absence, memory and imagination. Alongside works from the Donnersberg Collection and the Dslcollection, the exhibition also features site-specific pieces created in Saudi Arabia.

Notable artists such as French-Algerian Adel Abdessemed and Taiwanese Michael Lin are exhibiting in Saudi Arabia for the first time, further enriching the cultural dialogue presented in the exhibition.

Running until January 18, 2025, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the ongoing evolution of contemporary art, bridging cultural gaps and laying the groundwork for future artistic exchanges.

Exhibitors and visitors got informed about the techniques and the products on exhibition booths where trends and key points about hair, makeup, nail, laser hair removal and personal care being shared.”Stating that Türkiye stands out as an important production country in cosmetics and attracted more attention from exhibitors with the increase in exports in the sector in the first quarter, Mehmedova said, “In the cosmetics sector, whose exports increased by 2.9 percent in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 668.7 million dollars, BeautyEurasia continued to create new business, partnership and export opportunities for Türkiye with its strong regional network. This year, BeautyEurasia occupied a space 30% larger than last year’s, providing exhibitors with the opportunity to closely observe the strategies and innovations of the companies. Thus, the exhibition has made a significant contribution to the acceleration and growth of the sector’s dynamics this year as well. As Türkiye’s only cosmetics exhibition for 19 years, we have been pleased to continue contributing to the development of the sector and supporting the strengthening of Türkiye’s position in the international arena in this field.”

Exhibition will run from 17th October until 10th November 2024

Mestaria Gallery is proud to present the latest exhibition by renowned Bahraini artist Areej Rajab, titled “Interwoven,” running from 17th October to 10th November 2024. The exhibition invites viewers to experience an artistic and therapeutic play of colours and emotions where the intricate patterns of human behaviour are delicately overlapped with the rhythms of nature.

Born and raised in Bahrain, Areej Rajab was drawn into the world of art from a young age. While her academic path initially led her to study business and general management at the University of Bahrain. Her passion for art eventually steered her to the London College of Art, where her creative talents fully flourished. Areej’s work has since resonated with collectors and enthusiasts across the Middle East and the UK, where she has exhibited extensively.

Interwoven lies in Areej’s expression of the deep connection between nature and human behaviour. Through her artwork, she reveals the intricate beauty of natural forms and how they mirror the complexities of human emotions. By layering colours, Areej symbolically reflects how human emotions and experiences intertwine, much like patterns in nature, echoing the masterfully harmonious designs found in nature. As she explains, “I find inspiration in nature as it is the purest source of colour. My focus is on colour combinations and how they blend and overlap rather than just colour itself, much like how human behaviour and emotions often intertwine and influence one another. Different cultures can interpret colour in various ways, which adds another layer of meaning to my work”. Her paintings, with their fluid layers of paint, brushstrokes, and intentional lines, evoke a sense of movement and freedom, reflecting the rhythms and patterns found in both nature and human emotions.

Unlike artists who capture and document present moments to reflect current experiences and complexities they navigate, Areej’s paintings reflect a place where she aspires to be — expressing an optimistic and hopeful vision of the world. Through her translation of nature, she shifts perspectives to convey joy and optimism, using a carefully chosen colour palette, weaving a spectrum of colours, with each hue and shade meticulously chosen to inspire specific emotions and moods. She leaves her paintings untitled, believing that each viewer should have the freedom to interpret and connect with the artwork in their own way.

This exhibition at Mestaria Gallery invites guests to become part of an emotional moment, where each encounter creates a unique connection, “interwoven” between individual and canvas, leaving a lasting impression on Dubai’s art scene. Don’t miss being an added story to those brushstrokes of beauty.

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) has launched a new exhibition titled “The Camel Through the Ages” at its Dhahran location, in partnership with the Riyadh-based Layan Cultural Foundation. This exhibit, which will be open until November 1, aligns with the Ministry of Culture’s designation of this year as the Year of the Camel.

In a statement, Ithra highlighted the camel’s enduring significance in Arabian Peninsula societies, including Saudi Arabia, where it served as a vital means of transportation across diverse terrains, akin to the role of ships navigating the seas.

At the exhibition’s opening, Prince Faissal bin Abdullah bin Mohammed, founder of the Layan Cultural Foundation, delivered a poignant keynote speech emphasizing the camel’s role in the Kingdom’s cultural heritage as a symbol of strength and endurance.

Ghada Al-Tobaishi, the executive director of the LCF, remarked, “We are very pleased to cooperate with Ithra (on this) exhibition. This academic and cultural project aims to enrich the knowledge of many important facts of cultural heritage of past eras.”

The exhibition draws inspiration from a two-volume Arabic-language book on camels published by the LCF last year in collaboration with the King Abdulaziz Public Library.

Some pieces in the exhibition were specially commissioned, while others were derived from the book. The exhibition is curated by Kumail Muhammed Almusaly, with contributions from Maryam Al-Dossary.

“We, at Ithra, reached out to Layan Cultural Foundation to collaborate on an exhibit specifically for the Year of the Camel,” Almusaly told Arab News. “And it fits very well with the intent of this gallery, which focuses on the history of Saudi Arabia.”

Almusaly elaborated, “We came up with five themes in order to create a journey in which the visitor could flow freely between the artworks — it is not a linear journey.”

The exhibition explores five themes: the camel as an emblem of Arabian identity; the camel as a spiritual or meditative symbol, particularly through Qur’anic verses; the camel’s role in camel racing and family life; its place in oral or folk history; and the camel as a companion during rest and travel.

Upon entering the exhibit, visitors are greeted by a series of paintings, including a notable 2013 piece by Saudi artist Abdulrahman Al-Soliman titled “The Camel is not a Ship.”

“This is a statement by a pioneering artist,” Almusaly noted. “(It’s) a piece that ‘corrects’ our perception toward camels. He is using text over the painting, which states that the camel is ‘not the ship of the desert.’ He wants to convert that perception back to the reality that the camel is a creature — it is not an object.”

The exhibition also features digital mosaics from the LCF, along with artworks by both international and local artists. “There is a part where we switch to how Western artists have looked at Eastern culture — how they are examining the camel and Arabic culture from their perspective,” Almusaly explained.

Following the paintings, the exhibit showcases sculptures, photographs, historical coins, and traditional garments, with many pieces incorporating Arabic calligraphy.

According to Almusaly, the LCF has played a crucial role in “maintaining culture, maintaining history and preserving culture through these materials,” by bringing in experts to examine each object and enhance our understanding of the camel.

The exhibition offers a chance to view the camel through various artistic lenses, reflecting Saudi identity and underscoring the camel’s vital role in the Kingdom’s cultural and economic evolution.

The Musée d’Art Moderne (MAM) in Paris is currently showcasing an exhibition that delves into the deep connections between Arab artists and the French capital throughout the 20th century. Titled “Arab Presences: Modern Art and Decolonization: Paris 1908-1988,” the exhibition explores how artists from the Levant and North Africa found a new home in Paris, either to pursue their studies or to escape political turmoil in their native countries.

Curated by Morad Montazami, with assistance from Odile Burluraux and Madeleine de Colnet, the exhibition highlights the significant impact Arab artists had on the Parisian art scene, as well as how their work was shaped by their experiences in the city. Burluraux commented, “The exhibition is dedicated to reviving the history of Arab artists and their links with Paris, to tell a story that has never been told in this way.”

Spanning from 1908, when Lebanese poet and artist Gibran Khalil Gibran first arrived in Paris, to 1988, the exhibition traces the development of the Arab avant-garde movement.

It features over 200 works from more than 130 artists, many of whom are rarely exhibited in France. Notable artists include Iraqi artist Jamil Hamoudi, Algerian painter Baya, and Turkish artist Fahrelnissa Zeid.

Burluraux explained the significance of Paris during this period: “Paris at the beginning of the 20th century was an important colonial empire. The French language was spoken in most of North Africa and the Middle East. Arab artists who wanted to complete their art education were traveling to Paris to study in official art schools or ateliers.”

The exhibition not only underscores Paris as a place of refuge but also as a center for artistic innovation and freedom. It sheds light on how the city served as a breeding ground for the emancipation of Arab artists, allowing them to break away from the traditional styles taught in their home countries and embrace modernity.

Lamborghini Abu Dhabi & Dubai is thrilled to announce that the ‘Spirit of Countach’ is now one of the 100 pieces on display at the Automobili Lamborghini Museum. The exhibition titled “Dreamaway – Lamborghini through the eyes of the world” will spotlight the exceptional art piece commissioned in March 2023 in partnership with local artist Sasan Nasernia to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Lamborghini.

The composition captures the brand’s design philosophy: a perfect balance of iconic lines, braveness, and performance. It features intricate calligraphic forms inspired by ancient Arabic calligraphy and arabesque patterns in Islamic architecture. These elements are interwoven with the Lamborghini Countach’s body, creating a captivating illusion of the car floating, enhancing the piece’s spiritual and mysterious aura.

Now, the ‘Spirit of Countach’ stands as one of the esteemed designs featured in the Dreamaway exhibition. Each work of art comes together to transform the House of Sant’Agata Bolognese into a “diffused museum,” showcasing artworks by internationally renowned artists. Commissioned by Lamborghini showrooms worldwide, these creations celebrate 60 years of the brand’s innovation, design and integration into the local culture.

“Of the over 100 pieces created in honour of the 60th anniversary, we are proud that our masterpiece, designed and commissioned in the UAE, has been chosen to be on display at the Automobili Lamborghini Museum’s Dreamaway exhibition,” said Mr Rakan Turki, CEO of Lamborghini Abu Dhabi & Dubai. “Not only does the ‘Spirit of Countach’ highlight our rich cultural heritage and shows a glimpse into the local artistic talent, it also illustrates the Lamborghini brand harmoniously immersed into the UAE culture in the most beautiful manner.”

China‘s rich cultural heritage takes centre stage at the Venice Art Biennale as hundreds of ancient paintings and contemporary artworks make a transcontinental journey from Zhengzhou in Henan province to Italy. The exhibition, titled “Atlas: Harmony in Diversity,” unfolds at China’s National Pavilion, offering a captivating exploration of Chinese artistry through prints, videos, sculptures, installations, and performances.

A highlight of the exhibition is its homage to the monumental project “A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings,” which meticulously catalogues images of paintings spanning over 2,000 years. Divided into two sections, the showcase provides a comprehensive view of Chinese artistry, past, and present.

The archival section presents 100 high-fidelity prints of revered Chinese paintings housed in museums worldwide, accompanied by documents detailing their journey from creation to acquisition. This segment serves as a bridge between cultures, offering insights into the historical and artistic significance of these treasures beyond China’s borders.

Complementing the archival display are contemporary works by acclaimed artists, each drawing inspiration from themes prevalent in ancient Chinese paintings. From architecture and landscapes to figures and gardens, these modern interpretations seek to make Chinese art more accessible to Western audiences by employing familiar artistic languages.

Curator Wang Xiaosong emphasizes the exhibition’s mission to showcase the beauty and cultural essence of Chinese ink paintings, bridging cultural gaps through art. Through installations like Zhu Jinshi’s “Rice Paper Pagoda,” which juxtaposes traditional symbols with global perspectives, viewers are invited to contemplate the universality of artistic motifs across cultures.

Che Jianquan’s video installation “Pavilion” offers a visual journey through time and space, juxtaposing images of a pavilion on Lushan Mountain with pavilions from around the world. This multimedia approach highlights the interconnectedness of cultural symbols and invites viewers to explore the nuances of cultural expression.

Qiu Zhenzhong’s “Status Series” sculptures pay homage to calligraphy, the foundation of Chinese ink painting, by replicating brush strokes in concrete lines. This integration of traditional techniques with contemporary materials underscores the enduring relevance of Chinese artistic traditions in the modern world.

Adding a dynamic dimension to the exhibition is Wang Zhenghong’s performance art, where the artist interacts with visitors while adorned with 10,000 bird-shaped accessories. This whimsical yet profound gesture embodies the spirit of ancient Chinese paintings, which often feature birds as symbols of freedom and inspiration.

Incorporating poetry, nature, and cultural symbols, the exhibition offers a holistic representation of Chinese artistic heritage, inviting audiences to engage with its timeless beauty and cultural significance. As China continues to assert its cultural presence on the global stage, exhibitions like “Atlas: Harmony in Diversity” serve as poignant reminders of the enduring legacy of Chinese artistry.
