The Dior pre-fall collection runway show held at the Gateway of India monument in Mumbai was a celebration of luxury fashion, Indian craftsmanship, and heritage. The historic site was transformed into a glittering display of color and style, with the iconic Taj Mahal Palace hotel serving as a perfect backdrop. The runway, adorned with traditional Indian floral designs, reverberated with fusion beats from live musicians as Indian artistry took center stage in creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri’s collection.

The show opened with a range of neutrals, subtly transitioning to forest green before giving way to a blaze of bright colors and patterns. The lineup featured silk dresses, evening coats, and sari-inspired skirts that referenced traditional Indian silhouettes. Throughout it all, most of the models sported strings of pearls wound around their necks. The collection was a fusion of Indian and Western fashion, reflecting Dior’s long association with India through the Mumbai-based atelier Chanakya, which works with artisans and underprivileged women.

The creative director of Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri, expressed her desire to celebrate and showcase India’s incredible knowledge and expertise in the field of embroidery. She also highlighted the commitment of Chanakya’s founders to preserving India’s history and culture through each embroidery technique portrayed in the collection.

India has always been known for its intricate embroidery art, opulent textiles, and embellishments. With a young and aspirational middle class that has easy access to the internet and a rising number of uber-rich individuals, India is fast emerging as a key consumer market for international fashion labels. Many Indian designers have also opened stores in global fashion capitals like New York and Dubai and have been showcasing their collections during international fashion weeks.

The guest list for the show was an impressive blend of A-list celebrities from India and around the world. Bollywood actors such as the legendary Rekha, fashion icon Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, and Anushka Sharma, accompanied by her husband, Indian cricketer Virat Kohli, were among those in attendance. Western celebrities of Indian origin or descent, including Freida Pinto, Simone Ashley of ‘Bridgerton,’ sitarist Anoushka Shankar, and Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Radhika Jones, were also present. Other guests included actor Maisie Williams from “Game of Thrones” and Thai actors Mile and Apo from ‘KinnPorsche’.

The Dior pre-fall collection runway show at the Gateway of India monument in Mumbai was a celebration of Indian heritage and craftsmanship. The collection reflected the fusion of Indian and Western fashion, and the show brought the spotlight back on India’s luxury fashion market, where major Western fashion brands have presented their collections in the past. The impressive guest list highlighted India’s rising influence as a key consumer market for international fashion labels.

Riya Shrivastava, an AI artist, used Artificial Intelligence to create portraits of what ancient India might have looked like. She used brightly colored temples, waterfalls, and fireflies to create a beautiful picture. Shrivastava said she created the portraits at Midjourney, an independent research lab. Midjourney’s purpose is to “explore new mediums of thought and expand the imaginative powers of the human species.” Shrivastava experimented for 12 hours with AI to create the pieces.

I asked artificial intelligence what ancient India would have looked like, which is what it gave me. It was amazing to experiment with prompts and commands to finally get close to what I imagined.

“I asked #ai what ancient India would’ve looked like and this is what I got! What an amazing experience it was to experiment with prompts and commands to finally get close to what I imagined,” Shrivastava wrote in her LinkedIn post.

A LinkedIn user asked Shrivastava what the 12 hours of experimentation involved, to which she replied, “experimenting with different variations of the prompt and upscaling them to generate the final images.”

Artificial Intelligence has been helping people to imagine things that were once thought impossible. Recently, a YouTube channel called “How to Cook That” used an AI to create a cake recipe. The AI, called GPT-3, is able to generate written texts, such as articles and poems. This language model is fed billions of parameters, which makes it able to create recipes that look very realistic.

Ann tried to develop a recipe for food, and found that her first two recipes were not very good. However, on the third attempt, she found a recipe for a “Super Moist Giant Oreo Cake.” This means that her AI can perform as well as humans in this area.

Ann said that when she mixed together the ingredients for the cake, it resulted in a cake that was hard to chew and did not feel like it was moist. She also said that the cake was not what she would have called “moist” because it was not very soft.

The Artist Bala Nivetha was born and raised in Tamil Nadu, India. Ever since childhood, she has been interested in arts and crafts, which made her choose fashion design as her major in college, and she later graduated with her master’s in fashion design. Bala knew she always wanted to do something creative. But life got in the way when she took a break once she began busily supporting her husband’s business.

“Taking art as a profession started during my post-graduation days when I used to market and sell my handcrafted products, like personalized gifts and jewelry, via Facebook,” says Bala.

The 2020 COVID-19 outbreak and the following quarantine period gave her the moment to reflect, which reignited her passion for her art career, and then the Instagram platform allowed her to do just that.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, Bala became an art educator, teaching her students art styles such as acrylic paintings, mandalas, and resin. Her current interest in sculpture painting techniques led her to include them in her sessions.

“To teach art has been a newfound passion – for the past couple of years, and it feels even more joyful to transform the magic I know to others as well. To see someone, enjoy the same thing that I do is a blessing. Interacting with new people and exchanging ideas and perspectives on art is something beautiful,” says Bala.

The Heart Wants What It Wants

She proudly states that her students range in age and country, with an estimated 2000+ pupils taught in her offline and online classes.

“I also custom make decor pieces like Clocks, name boards, and mirrors with sculpture painting, resin & other mixed media,” says Bala.

Bala strongly believes that “art is the freedom to explore.”

Art is more about being not restricted, doing what we feel is best on the canvas, irrespective of worrying about the results. Bala enjoys creating new pieces and revamping old ones to give them a new look. A day never ends for her without making or thinking about creating something new. Art completes her day, making it merrier and giving her a feeling of contentment.

Bala hopes to create more art and impart her knowledge and experience in art to more people.

  •  The Cybertecture Egg was designed by architect James Law in collaboration with Ove Arup’s building systems and engineering firm.
  • The building was designed with sustainability in mind, and it has 33,000 square meters of office space, an elevated garden, and three levels of basement parking with 400 spaces, all while taking up about 15% less space than a traditional office building
  • The Cybertecture Egg’s structure is made up of diagrid exoskeletons, which form a rigid structural system and allow it to be built with less material than a traditional orthogonal building.
