In the dimly lit halls of the Americas Society in New York City, an exhibition titled “El Dorado: Myths of Gold” is a poignant exploration of Latin America’s tumultuous history with extraction and colonization. At the heart of this collection lies Colombian artist Carlos Motta’s haunting video, “Nefandus,” which narrates the brutal atrocities inflicted upon indigenous peoples by Spanish conquerors, set against the backdrop of Colombia’s Don Diego River.

Motta’s work epitomizes the exhibition’s core theme – the intersection of colonial violence, the passage of time, and the enduring allure of El Dorado, the mythical city of gold. According to co-curator Edward Sullivan, the myth of El Dorado served as a catalyst for the exploitation and plunder of the Americas, fostering a narrative of utopia and conquest.

With over 100 objects and artworks from 60 artists, “El Dorado: Myths of Gold” delves into the consequences of this myth, tracing its impact from the 16th century to the present day. The exhibition not only examines historical accounts but also confronts the ongoing legacy of extraction in Latin America.

The origins of the El Dorado myth can be traced back to Spanish encounters with the Tayrona people in Colombia, where the allure of gold sparked centuries of exploitation. This pursuit of precious metals drove Spanish colonization and laid the groundwork for modern-day extractivism, from oil in Venezuela to lithium in Chile and Argentina.

One striking exhibit, “Moscas (Flies),” by Bolivian artist Andrés Bedoya, metaphorically portrays the plague of silver extraction in Bolivia. The Cerro Rico mines of Potosí serve as a grim reminder of the human cost of extraction, where millions of indigenous and African miners perished to enrich European powers.

While El Dorado may have been a fabled city, its legacy endures in the form of environmental degradation, displacement of indigenous communities, and socioeconomic disparities. Artists like Nancy La Rosa and Esperanza Mayobre confront this reality head-on, shedding light on the ongoing struggles in Peru and Venezuela.

La Rosa’s “Mirages (Espejismos)” series exposes the impact of gold extraction on communities in the Peruvian Amazon, while Mayobre’s sculptures honour indigenous peoples affected by gold mining in Venezuela. These artworks serve as a poignant reminder of the human and environmental toll of extractivism.

As Latin America grapples with the resurgence of extractive industries, the exhibition’s relevance remains undeniable. Recent legal battles, such as the Guatemalan Indigenous Mayan community’s fight against a nickel mine and Ecuadorian communities’ victory against a gold mine, underscore the ongoing struggle for environmental justice.

In the words of co-curator Aimé Iglesias Lukin, the exhibition offers an opportunity to “denaturalize” the significance of gold and explore its cultural and historical implications. Through art, the legacy of El Dorado is unmasked, revealing a complex narrative of exploitation, resistance, and resilience in Latin America.

In the intricate world of ceramics, Donna Ray has masterfully sculpted more than just clay; she has moulded narratives and reshaped perceptions. With over 25 years of experience, Ray’s second solo exhibition, “Women’s Equity and Gender Fluidity,” currently graces the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery, offering a profound exploration into women’s contributions globally.

“For an artist, having a residency and curating a show is a dream come true,” Ray expressed, her voice resonating with pride and anticipation. The labour of love spanned six months, resulting in 48 meticulously crafted ceramic pieces that resonate with depth and symbolism.

Ray’s exhibition is not merely an artistic endeavour; it’s a poignant commentary on women’s pivotal roles in education, land ownership, and agriculture. Through the malleable medium of clay, she endeavours to convey the interconnectedness of all beings, emphasizing the gender fluidity inherent in Mother Earth.

“My intent was to encapsulate the essence of what matters most to me as an artist, fostering a narrative that resonates with present and future generations,” Ray explained passionately. Her creations are a harmonious blend of aesthetics and advocacy, each piece echoing stories of resilience, empowerment, and unity.

Central to the exhibit are three striking goddess figures, representing the continents of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. These sculptures stand as a testament to the global sisterhood, honouring the diverse tapestry of women’s experiences across borders and cultures.

Complementing these goddesses are large ceramic spoons, symbolic of nourishment and sustenance, and word puzzles intricately crafted on ceramic tiles. These puzzles, upon closer inspection, unveil interconnected narratives, illustrating the symbiotic relationship between women and the world around them.

For Ray, who was born blind, clay serves as a tactile canvas, allowing her to perceive and navigate the world in her unique way. “For me, it’s about the feel, the touch, and the vision that resides within,” she articulated, highlighting the profound connection between art and sensory perception.

Yet, beyond the artistic brilliance lies a deeper mission. Ray fervently hopes her exhibition will challenge perceptions and broaden horizons, particularly regarding individuals with disabilities, and more specifically, women of colour. In an art world often dominated by conventional norms, Ray’s voice emerges as a clarion call for inclusivity and representation.

“There’s a place for each one of us, a space where our voices and visions can flourish,” Ray asserted. Her words resonate with a universal truth, emphasizing diversity’s richness in the artistic landscape.

As visitors traverse the gallery, they are invited on a journey—a journey that celebrates women, embraces diversity, and champions the indomitable spirit of resilience. Ray’s exhibition is not merely a visual treat; it’s a transformative experience, challenging visitors to see beyond the surface and delve into the profound narratives that shape our collective consciousness.

In conclusion, Donna Ray’s “Women’s Equity and Gender Fluidity” stands as a testament to the power of art to inspire change, ignite conversations, and forge connections. Through her visionary creations, Ray invites us all to envision a world where every voice is heard, every story is celebrated, and every individual is valued. It’s a poignant reminder that art, in its myriad forms, can reshape narratives, challenge perceptions, and foster a more inclusive and equitable world.

Argentine Artists Turn Worthless Bills into Valuable Art: The Impact of Economic Turmoil https://magzoid.com/argentine-artists-economic-turmoil/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 07:21:33 +0000 https://magzoid.com/?p=38415 In an intriguing juxtaposition of history and economic turmoil, a jaguar now lies beside George Washington. In an intriguing juxtaposition of history and economic turmoil, a jaguar now lies beside George Washington. This unusual pairing of the United States’ first president and an Argentine predator rests against the backdrop of a U.S. dollar and a 500-peso Argentine note, bound together like a book. This symbolic artwork, created by artist Sergio Díaz, serves as a poignant commentary on Argentina’s ongoing currency devaluation and staggering inflation rates.

Argentina has experienced devastating economic turmoil and economic downturn over the past year, with the peso losing approximately 60% of its value compared to the U.S. dollar. This depreciation is occurring simultaneously with one of the world’s highest inflation rates, amplifying economic hardships for its citizens. The resulting frustration and discontent have fueled the rise of anti-establishment candidates who admire former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Amid this economic turmoil, a group of artists has chosen to express their concerns and outrage through their craft, using art to shed light on the profound economic damage being inflicted upon the country. Ironically, as these artists channel their frustrations into their creations, their artwork is simultaneously increasing the value of the increasingly worthless Argentine bills they employ as their canvas.

This phenomenon highlights how runaway inflation is reshaping the habits and priorities of Argentines. Middle-class individuals are cutting back on luxuries like beauty parlour visits, while families are turning to secondhand clothing due to fears of rising prices. Those with disposable income are stockpiling essential goods, well aware that prices are set to surge again in the coming months. Paradoxically, restaurants in the capital are thriving because saving money seems futile when each paycheck’s purchasing power diminishes with every passing month.

Sergio Díaz, along with other Argentine artists, leads the “Money Art” movement, using modestly priced brushes and acrylics to transform 10, 20, 100, or 1,000-peso notes into unique works of art. Their creations fetch prices ranging from 40,000 to 70,000 pesos within Argentina and as much as $300 abroad. Stringent capital controls in the country have limited access to the official foreign exchange market, leading to the proliferation of parallel rates.

The artists’ initiative is an attempt to reclaim their currency at a time when Argentine pesos have faced scorn from neighboring countries. Brazilian soccer fans have mockingly torn up peso bills to taunt their Argentine rivals, and Paraguayan exchange offices have started refusing to accept Argentine pesos.

August witnessed a staggering 12.4% surge in inflation from the previous month, marking the highest monthly consumer price increase since February 1991. Compared to the same month the previous year, prices soared by 124%, according to the government’s Indec statistics agency.

Díaz’s artwork featuring George Washington and the jaguar is just one piece from his series titled “The Art of Devaluation,” set to be exhibited in his hometown of Salta in November. Díaz explains that his art embodies an element of transgression and vandalism but ultimately seeks to address the pervasive issue of inflation affecting all Argentines.

Other creations from the artist include portraits of Argentine soccer legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi on bills, as well as iconic characters such as Pennywise from “It” and figures from “Harry Potter.”

Fellow artist Cristian English, who began working on bills during the COVID-19 pandemic, has found demand for his work in countries like Paraguay and Chile. His Diego Maradona portrait on a 10-peso bill has garnered particular attention.

Despite the challenges of working with low-quality paper, artists like English remain committed to using the 2,000-peso bills, finding them more affordable than traditional canvases. The economic situation they confront may be unparalleled, but their creativity and determination serve as a testament to the resilience of the Argentine people in the face of adversity.

After the devastating Beirut Port blast of 2020, the Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock Museum in Beirut was left in ruins. However, after extensive restoration efforts and support from various international organizations, the museum will finally reopen its doors on May 26, marking a significant milestone for the Lebanese cultural scene.

The reconstruction of the early 20th-century townhouse included replacing all windows, repairing doors, elevators, drop ceilings, and skylights, and restoring traditional wooden panels on the museum’s historical floor. Funding for the museum’s restoration was also provided by the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas, the French Ministry of Culture, Agenzia Italiana Per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo, and UNESCO-Li Beirut, among others, raising a total of $2,376,751.

Around 50 artworks were also restored, including two significant pieces, “Untitled (Consolation)” by Paul Guiragossian and a portrait of Nicolas Sursock by Kees Van Dongen. These were restored by the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

The museum’s reopening is an achievement in itself, symbolizing the city’s resilience and belief in the power of art and culture, especially during times of hardship. The director of the museum, Karina El-Helou, expressed that the reopening is not just a celebration of the museum but also the people who stayed and worked on it over the past few years, despite the economic collapse the country continues to face.

The Sursock Museum’s significance extends beyond being a museum. It represents the memory of Beirut and a country that has faced numerous crises in recent years. Its reopening is an opportunity to celebrate the museum’s and Beirut’s cultural scene’s endurance and resilience.

To mark its reopening, the museum has planned an ambitious program of five exhibitions, including “Je Suis Inculte! The Salon d’Automne and the National Canon,” “Beyond Ruptures: A Tentative Chronology,” “Earthy Praxis,” “Ejecta: Zad Moultaka,” and “Beirut Recollections.” These exhibitions aim to showcase the museum’s history and local socio-political events through works by prominent Lebanese artists.

In conclusion, the reopening of Beirut’s Sursock Museum marks a significant milestone in the city’s cultural scene’s history, representing the memory of Beirut and a country that has faced numerous crises. The museum’s restoration and reopening demonstrate the resilience of art and culture during challenging times and its ability to bring communities together.
