The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enriching the emirate’s public art scene. This biennial event underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to creating accessible and engaging art spaces for the public, emphasizing the integration of art into everyday urban landscapes.

The inaugural Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial will kick off in November 2024 and will feature a range of installations, sculptures, and art displays across prominent locations in Abu Dhabi. The biennial is designed to foster artistic exploration and inspire creative dialogue within the community, while also showcasing Abu Dhabi as a global cultural hub. Through its diverse art installations and interactive displays, the biennial will offer residents and visitors an immersive experience that merges art with the urban environment.

The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s long-term cultural vision, which includes developing sustainable and community-focused spaces for the arts.

DCT Abu Dhabi explained that this new biennial will serve as a platform for international and local artists to present innovative works, bringing together talents from around the globe. By placing art in public spaces, Abu Dhabi seeks to make artistic engagement accessible, enabling residents and visitors alike to connect with creativity in their everyday surroundings.

As part of its commitment to fostering a thriving cultural ecosystem, the DCT has outlined plans for educational workshops, talks, and interactive sessions to complement the installations. These activities aim to engage a broader audience and inspire future generations of artists in the UAE. “The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial is an invitation to explore the evolving relationship between art, community, and space,” stated a spokesperson from DCT Abu Dhabi. “We want to create opportunities for the public to connect with art beyond the traditional gallery setting.”

The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial also supports the emirate’s growing tourism and cultural sectors. By establishing itself as a destination for innovative public art, Abu Dhabi seeks to attract art lovers and cultural tourists from around the world.

The biennial’s integration into the city’s landscape is expected to have a long-lasting impact, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts among residents and enhancing Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a leader in cultural development.

In addition to fostering international recognition, the biennial provides a platform for Emirati artists to present their work on a global stage, strengthening Abu Dhabi’s role as a nexus for artistic innovation in the Middle East. The installations will not only add aesthetic value but will serve as landmarks of cultural significance, encouraging viewers to engage with the city in new and meaningful ways.

With the launch of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, the city continues its mission of positioning itself as a central hub for the arts. Powder Mountain, renowned for its expansive ski terrain, is transforming into a groundbreaking destination that fuses outdoor adventure with contemporary art. Additionally, Reed Hastings, co-founder and former CEO of Netflix, has announced plans to convert the mountain into a skiable art museum. As a result, this initiative will blend the beauty of the natural landscape with the creativity of some of the world’s most celebrated artists.

Skiable Art a Fusion of Art and Nature

The project, spearheaded by Powder Mountain’s new arts program, will feature works by renowned artists, including James Turrell, Jenny Holzer, Paul McCarthy, Arthur Jafa, Nikita Gale, and Gala Porras-Kim. These installations will be integrated into the mountain’s landscape, creating an immersive experience for visitors.

Powder Mountain will house James Turrell’s walk-in light installation, Ganzfeld Apani (2011), in a specially designed trailside pavilion. Jenny Holzer will engrave her iconic text-based art onto the rock formations, while Paul McCarthy will create a piece rooted in the mythology of the American West. EJ Hill, known for his functional roller coaster at MASS MOCA in 2022, will design two new ski lifts, adding a unique artistic element to the resort’s infrastructure.

Grand Opening Set for 2026

The first phase of the art installations, including EJ Hill’s ski lift designs, will be available for viewing starting in the 2024–2025 ski season. The art museum will hold its full-scale grand opening in 2026, promising visitors a one-of-a-kind experience where they can engage with art while skiing, hiking, or mountain biking.

Curatorial Vision

Director Matthew Thompson, Chief Creative Officer Alex Zhang, and independent curator Diana Nawi, who recently took on the role of curator of contemporary art at LACMA, originally conceived the art program at Powder Mountain. Moreover, their curatorial vision actively integrates art into the mountain’s seasonal rhythms, drawing inspiration from the historical land art projects of the American West.

“We want to empower a diverse and intergenerational range of artists to create ambitious experiences in the landscape that broaden the story of land art and expand its possibilities,” said Thompson.

A Visionary Project

Reed Hastings, who purchased Powder Mountain after its establishment in 1972 and its development into a world-class ski resort, envisions this project as a holistic integration of art, nature, and community. In addition, he stated, “At Powder, we want every experience—from the ski resort to the residential community to the outdoor art museum—to be intentional. Consequently, the integration of art into the mountain is a manifestation of that consideration,” said Hastings.

Expert Collaboration

The project has enlisted the expertise of renowned landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand, known for their work on the Storm King Art Center, and the acclaimed architectural firm Johnston Marklee, which is designing the visitor center.

With its unique combination of art, nature, and adventure, Powder Mountain is poised to redefine the concept of a cultural destination, offering visitors an unparalleled experience that celebrates creativity and the natural environment.

John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport, a bustling hub for global travel, is about to become an artistic destination. On Tuesday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced the selection of 18 artists from seven countries to create permanent installations for the soon-to-open Terminal 6.

The $4.2 billion terminal, slated for completion in 2026, will showcase works by established and emerging artists, many with deep ties to New York. The roster includes local talents like Sky Hopinka, Charles Gaines, and the renowned Barbara Kruger.

This initiative significantly expands JFK’s artistic footprint, solidifying its position as the New York airport with the most extensive permanent art collection. This news follows the recent unveiling of new public artworks at LaGuardia Airport in Queens and Newark Liberty International Airport, both spearheaded by the Port Authority.

In 2022, LaGuardia’s Delta Terminal C welcomed six large-scale installations by Rashid Johnson, Aliza Nisenbaum, Ronny Quevedo, and others. These artworks celebrated New York’s vibrant diversity and rich history, echoing a similar theme in Terminal B’s five installations. Newark Airport joined the artistic movement with two monumental works by Layqa Nuna Yawar and Karyn Olivier.

JFK Terminal 6 boasts a dedicated art budget of $22 million, entirely funded by JFK Millennium Partners – a consortium of private developers led by the Vantage Group, responsible for LaGuardia’s artistic transformation. Notably, the budget for Terminal 6’s art program doubles the investment made at LaGuardia.

The Port Authority has once again partnered with the Public Art Fund, the New York-based non-profit that successfully commissioned artworks at LaGuardia and Newark. (The Queens Museum curated the art selection for LaGuardia’s Terminal C.)

Passengers at Terminal 6 can expect a diverse artistic experience. The program features suspended sculptures by Laure Prouvost and Haegue Yang, captivating wall works by Nevin Aladag and Sky Hopinka, and a particularly intriguing series of 10 monumental glass mosaic floor medallions. As per the Port Authority, these medallions aim to evoke a distinct “New York sense of place.” Artists like Shara Hughes, Eddie Martinez, Kambui Olujimi, Candida Alvarez, and Charline von Heyl will contribute to this floor art project.

“Public art that inspires and reflects the spirit of our region is a core element of the Port Authority’s strategy to develop world-class airports that become destinations in their own right,” stated Rick Cotton, the Port Authority’s executive director. “Following the success of LaGuardia and Newark’s Terminal A, the public art program at JFK Terminal 6 will captivate travellers and establish a unique sense of place that embodies the essence of New York.”

Meiro Koizumi (born 1976) is a contemporary Japanese artist who crafts mesmerising installations and sculptures that explore the delicate balance between memory, impermanence, and the natural world. His works, often constructed with organic materials like wood and thread, are visually captivating and emotionally resonant.

Born in Gunma, Japan in 1976, Koizumi’s artistic journey began with a focus on performance art. His early works explored themes of social dynamics and power structures, often placing himself or others in awkward or uncomfortable situations. These performances laid the groundwork for his later shift towards installations, where he utilised constructed scenarios to evoke emotions and pose questions.

Koizumi’s signature style involves meticulously constructing installations that blur the line between reality and artifice. He often draws inspiration from nature, incorporating elements like branches, leaves, and woven threads to create intricate and organic forms. While visually stunning, these installations often carry a sense of impermanence and decay, mirroring the fleeting nature of memories and experiences.

A recurring theme in Koizumi’s work is the exploration of memory. He utilises repetitive structures or fragmented narratives to create a sense of disorientation, forcing viewers to piece together their own interpretations. By manipulating scale and perspective, he creates environments that feel both familiar and unsettling, prompting viewers to question their own memories and perceptions.

Koizumi’s artistic career has garnered international acclaim. His work has been exhibited in prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and Tate Modern in London. He is a skilled sculptor and a master storyteller, weaving narratives into his installations that resonate with viewers on a personal level.

Meiro Koizumi’s artistic vision continues to evolve. By employing organic materials and intricate constructions, Meiro Koizumi creates beautiful and thought-provoking installations. His work serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing memories, leaving a lasting impact on those who experience it.

Aberdeen’s renowned Nuart street art festival is set to captivate residents and visitors alike as it kicks off on Thursday. The vibrant event, which attracts talented artists from across the globe, has been a staple in the Granite City since its inception in 2017, with the only hiatus occurring in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, the usually bustling streets and walls that serve as canvases for the festival were eerily empty.

This year, the festival will transform the city centre’s walls into expansive works of art. Notable locations such as Aberdeen International Airport and the Union Point office tower near the ferry terminal will showcase enormous murals. Other prominent buildings featuring striking artworks include the former John Lewis store, Aberdeen Health Village, and the Atholl House office block.

Nuart is orchestrated by Aberdeen Inspired, a business improvement organisation dedicated to enhancing the city’s appeal. Adrian Watson, the chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, expressed his pride in the festival’s international recognition, emphasising its importance as a point of pride for Aberdeen.

“The event is now recognised on the global stage, which is something to be proud of,” Watson remarked. “It highlights the city’s commitment to fostering a vibrant arts scene and engaging locals and visitors through innovative and accessible public art.”

Nuart brings a splash of colour to Aberdeen and engages the community through various activities. This year’s festival includes walking tours, allowing attendees to explore the artworks up close and learn about the artists and their creative processes. These tours provide a unique opportunity to gain insight into the themes and inspirations behind the murals, fostering a deeper appreciation for the art form.

Since its debut, Nuart has been instrumental in redefining Aberdeen’s cultural landscape. The festival’s influence extends beyond mere aesthetics, contributing to the city’s economic vitality by drawing tourists and encouraging local spending. The presence of internationally acclaimed artists has also positioned Aberdeen as a key destination in the global street art scene.

The murals themselves are as diverse as the artists who create them. They range from bold, abstract compositions to intricate, thought-provoking pieces that reflect contemporary social issues. This diversity ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy and ponder, making the festival an inclusive cultural event.

One of this year’s festival highlights is the mural at Aberdeen International Airport, which welcomes visitors with a vibrant, larger-than-life artwork that sets the tone for their stay in the city. Similarly, the Union Point office tower mural serves as a landmark for those arriving by ferry, instantly immersing them in the festival’s creative spirit.

In addition to the visual feast provided by the murals, Nuart fosters a sense of community and shared experience. The walking tours, in particular, encourage interaction among attendees, sparking conversations about art, culture, and the city’s evolving identity. The artists enrich these interactions and often participate in discussions and workshops, offering their perspectives and engaging directly with the audience.

The Nuart festival runs until Sunday, providing ample time for art enthusiasts to explore and appreciate the myriad murals adorning the city’s buildings. As the festival grows in scope and acclaim, it cements Aberdeen’s reputation as a vibrant hub for street art and cultural innovation.

In a city known for its granite architecture, Nuart brings a refreshing and dynamic contrast, celebrating the transformative power of art in public spaces. As the festival unfolds, Aberdeen’s streets will again come alive with colour, creativity, and a palpable sense of community spirit.

This initiative aims to transform Dubai into an open-air gallery, featuring a wide array of public artworks, including murals, sculptures, and installations. Spearheaded by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, this strategy not only beautifies the city but also supports local artists and stimulates cultural tourism.

A Vision for Public Art

The Dubai Public Art Strategy is grounded in the vision of making art accessible to everyone. The strategy involves collaborations with various art entities such as Art Dubai, Tashkeel, Alserkal Avenue, and Art Jameel.

Key Installations and Projects

The strategy includes several notable projects that showcase Dubai’s commitment to public art:

  • “Wave of Imagination” by Jassim Alawadhi: This sculpture, located near Jumeirah Beach, symbolizes the interconnectivity between water and earth. Made from recycled materials, it highlights the importance of environmental awareness.
  • “Al Duroor” by Mattar bin Lahej: Situated in the Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood, this sculpture reflects traditional astronomical calculations and serves as a modern reinterpretation of Emirati heritage.
  • Dubai Park Murals: Murals such as “The Tide” by Yubran Gosne and “Amalgamation” by Ahmed Amine Aitouche adorn various parks across the city. These artworks celebrate Dubai’s balance between tradition and modernity.

Supporting Local Artists

A significant aspect of the Dubai Public Art Strategy is its focus on nurturing local talent. By commissioning artworks from UAE-based artists, the initiative provides them with a platform to showcase their creativity. This support not only boosts the careers of local artists but also enriches the cultural fabric of Dubai.

Enhancing Cultural Tourism

Public art plays a crucial role in attracting tourists and enhancing their experience of the city. The strategically placed artworks in popular and historic locations make Dubai a more vibrant and engaging destination. This initiative aligns with Dubai’s broader goal of becoming a global cultural hub.

Community Engagement

The Dubai Public Art Strategy also emphasizes community involvement. This approach helps to create a sense of ownership and pride among residents, further integrating art into daily life.

Conclusion

The Dubai Public Art Strategy is a visionary initiative that transforms the city into an expansive, interactive gallery. By showcasing diverse artworks and supporting local artists, it enriches Dubai’s cultural landscape and enhances its appeal as a global cultural destination. This strategy not only beautifies the city but also fosters a vibrant community spirit and stimulates cultural tourism, making Dubai a model for other cities worldwide.

It was a pleasant surprise to see sunny skies greet the attendees at the two-day Quoz Arts Fest in Alserkal Avenue on Saturday after nearly a week of dismal weather in Dubai. Up to Sunday, the milestone 10th festival, which has the theme “Shift Away,” will feature live music, visual and performing arts, gastronomic experiences, public art installations, and more. Along with a farmers’ market, art exhibitions, public art, talks, and workshops, themes, or “portals,” such as Cyborg, Nature, and Childhood, are curated throughout the alleyways of the Dubai arts district.

The varied schedule of events reflects the diversity of the audience, according to the National. New shows are being presented in galleries like Mestaria Gallery and the Ishara Art Foundation, where young parents with young children in strollers, culture enthusiasts, and creatives are constantly coming and going. Teenagers skating in front of their families, young couples and friends walking their dogs, bookworms making their way to Zerzura Rare Books in A4 space for a book launch, music fans congregating at the main stage, and costumed dancers mingling with the throng are also there.

Quoz Arts Fest is a genuine representation of the vibrant and expanding community that Alserkal Avenue has played a significant role in building in Dubai. Quoz Arts Fest offers a stage for upcoming artists from all disciplines to present their work. This year’s festival has an immersive art experience called Concrete by Montreal’s Irregular, which is drawing sizable crowds. Two enormous, ceiling-high screens in the middle of Alserkal Avenue’s courtyard are titled As WaterFalls and investigate how the movement of water within a digital cascade symbolizes our relationship with the element and its many facets.

The massive installation responds to flashlights from cell phones and displays various movements and shapes that cascade down the screen for viewers to interact with. People of various ages and ethnicities are taking pleasure in this vibrant, engaging event. The centre stage is located across from Concrete, in front of several food trucks and performers decked up as silver dancing robots. The Tasty Biscuit from Dubai, Bu Kolthoum, a rapper and vocalist with soul and funk influences, and Saint Levant, a viral artist, are just a few of the acts performing throughout the course of the weekend.

Each year’s festival experience has grown to include live music and entertainment. Music blogger and radio personality MC Big Hass, who will perform on both festival evenings, claims that Quoz Arts Fest has made it possible for musicians to reach out to new audiences.

For certain musicians, the festival has almost become a rite of passage, according to Big Hass, who claims that if they can “rock this festival and generate hype,” they will be able to move on. “Places like this, where beautiful energies are colliding, where you have a diversity of people coming, it’s very important to get to know who’s who and who’s making what,” he adds. “It’s the energy that this festival gives … it’s beautiful.”

Jurkute says it’s been important for them to make sure the festival is not “regionally bound”, but that they “stay connected with talent that has a connection to this region”.

“Dubai, as a city, already has been this extensive platform for the world,” Big Hass adds. “It’s not about where you were born, or whether you are local. It really is this connection to this place, in this part of the world.”

Dubai Public Art, a government organisation in the United Arab Emirates, aims to turn the emirate into a public, open, and international gallery of art so that both locals and visitors can enjoy outstanding works of art.

This is done in an effort to enhance the local aesthetic and cultural landscape. Together with Tashkeel, Art Dubai, Al Serkal Avenue, Jameel Arts Centre, and Akaas Visual Arts, the new initiative will feature a number of distinctive, site-specific art works that will be dispersed throughout Dubai.

UAE-based artists can now submit proposals for the first commission being organised by Dubai Culture. It will be unveiled in late 2023 in Al Hudaiba, one of Dubai’s most stunning public gardens, which looks out over the Etihad Museum and Union House. The application date is February 13, 2023.

Each of the shortlisted artists will get a sum of US$5,000 to produce a thorough proposal and a prototype of their works when the 16th edition of Art Dubai is revealed from March 1 to 5.
