The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has unveiled the second phase of the Dubai Culture and Heritage project on the Google Arts & Culture platform. This move, in collaboration with Google, is part of a wider strategy to preserve and promote Dubai’s rich heritage while solidifying its status as a global cultural hub.

Strategic Partnership to Boost Dubai’s Cultural Profile

This latest phase of the project was revealed during an event at the Etihad Museum, showcasing the strong partnership between Dubai Culture and Google. The initiative aligns with Dubai’s broader cultural strategy, which aims to enhance the city’s status as a centre for creativity, while preparing for upcoming international events like the 2024 World Cities Culture Summit and the 2025 International Council of Museums General Conference.

Her Excellency Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture, explained, “This initiative reflects our commitment to preserving Dubai’s cultural, audio, and visual heritage, a key priority for the sector. It offers an innovative platform for global audiences to explore Dubai’s distinctive environment, creative scene, robust infrastructure, and rich diversity.”

Showcasing Dubai’s Vibrant Cultural Scene

In its second phase, the project highlights over 130 expertly curated stories and more than 1,200 images and videos in both Arabic and English, offering audiences a unique window into Dubai’s cultural landscape. From documenting heritage elements and local crafts to showcasing Dubai’s distinctive lifestyle, this project opens up new avenues for exploring the emirate’s creative history and its evolving modern culture.

The project’s façade includes original artwork by Khalid Mezaina, inspired by the stories and images of Dubai’s hidden treasures, from traditional clothing to public art, that form part of the city’s rich cultural tapestry.

Expanding Digital Platforms for Local Talent

HE Hala Badri also emphasized the role of digital platforms in enhancing the emirate’s creative economy. “At Dubai Culture, we aim to harness digital tools and technology to strengthen the cultural and creative industries, which are vital to the creative economy. The initiative also seeks to raise awareness of the sector’s importance, its unique investment and development opportunities, and celebrates the creativity of local talent,” she added.

Creatives Empowered by New AI-Centric Bootcamp

In conjunction with the cultural heritage project, Dubai Culture and Google announced the second edition of the MENA Creatives Bootcamp, set for February 2025. This year’s bootcamp will focus on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used by the creative community to enhance their projects and expand their presence in the digital world.

Anthony Nacache, Managing Director at Google MENA, praised the ongoing collaboration: “We are happy to have established a five-year partnership with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, mirroring a joint mission to highlight the emirate’s cultural gems and share such unique discoveries with the world.”

Celebrating Dubai’s Cultural Diversity

The initiative also aims to foster opportunities for Emirati and UAE-based talent, giving them a global platform to showcase their creative expressions. Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi, Director of Marketing & Corporate Communication at Dubai Culture, noted, “Through this initiative, Dubai Culture aims to expand opportunities for Emirati and UAE-based talent, empowering them to express their visions and ideas through a wide range of artistic productions.”

The second phase of the Dubai Culture and Heritage project continues to highlight Dubai’s dynamic arts and culture sector, ensuring that the emirate remains a key player on the global cultural stage.

Latifa Saeed, a multidisciplinary Emirati artist based in Dubai, is making a significant impact on the international art scene with her innovative installations that celebrate and promote UAE culture. Her work, which has been exhibited in prominent art venues from Kochi, India, to Venice, Italy, is gaining widespread acclaim from both art enthusiasts and critics.

One of Saeed’s most notable installations, titled ‘Dust Devils,’ is inspired by the vast deserts of the UAE. The piece creatively combines a smoke machine, a hologram, and an electromagnetic device to simulate natural whirlpools and tornadoes, offering viewers a sensory experience that captures the essence of the Middle Eastern desert landscapes. “Visitors would leave with a fascination, understanding, and gain knowledge about the atmospheric phenomenal landscapes of the Middle Eastern deserts,” Saeed explained, speaking ahead of Emirati Women’s Day.

Saeed’s passion for art was nurtured during her time at Latifa School for Girls in Dubai, where she found a strong art curriculum that treated art as a core subject throughout her academic journey. Reflecting on her beginnings, Saeed noted, “I believe that was the catalyst for my artistic career.”

Recently, Saeed’s work has been featured as part of the ‘Beyond Emerging Artists’ initiative, organized by Abu Dhabi Art under the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi). This initiative has brought her art to esteemed platforms such as the Durbar Hall Art Gallery in Kochi, Kerala, and the Biennale Arte 2024 in Venice, Italy. Both of these events are known for attracting leading artists, collectors, curators, and critics from around the world.

Speaking about her participation in the Venice Biennale, Saeed remarked, “The Venice Biennale is a globally renowned biennale. Abu Dhabi Art placed our exhibition on the most important cultural international platform, this will significantly impact our artistic careers.”

At the Kochi fair, Saeed presented a piece titled ‘Notes from Another Shore,’ supported by the Rizq Art Initiative, which celebrated the cultural relationship between the UAE and Kerala. “This relationship brings new dimensions to the cultural landscapes of both regions,” she noted, adding that her experience at the Kochi fair was profound. “It reinforced the idea that art transcends borders and languages, acting as a universal medium that brings people together. I am grateful for the opportunity to bring a piece of Emirati culture to the people of Kerala and to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the community. Our works found resonance in Kerala.”

Saeed emphasized that her international exposure has provided her with a broader perspective on her work, allowing her to view it within a global context. “It deepens my understanding of my own nation and culture. This exposure enriches our creativity, increases our credibility, and inspires us to explore new ideas and innovation while staying rooted in the values and traditions that define our identity,” she said.

The emblem of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a powerful symbol that encapsulates the nation’s identity, heritage, and aspirations. Adopted in 1973, two years after the UAE was formed, the emblem is rich in symbolism and reflects the unity and strength of the country.

The Design of the UAE Emblem

Key Elements

The UAE emblem features a golden falcon, a revered bird in Arab culture, symbolizing strength, courage, and freedom. The falcon holds a red parchment with the name “United Arab Emirates” written in Kufic script, an ancient and stylized form of Arabic calligraphy. The falcon’s chest bears a circular national flag, surrounded by seven stars representing the seven emirates that make up the UAE: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah.

Color Symbolism

The colors used in the emblem – gold, red, green, black, and white – are the same as those in the UAE flag, each with its own significance. Gold symbolizes wealth and prosperity, red stands for bravery and strength, green represents growth and success, black signifies the oil that has contributed to the nation’s wealth, and white denotes peace and honesty.

Historical Background

Formation of the UAE

The emblem was officially adopted on December 2, 1973, to mark the second anniversary of the formation of the United Arab Emirates. The creation of the emblem was part of a broader effort to forge a national identity for the newly unified country, reflecting the shared heritage and collective aspirations of its people.

Evolution of the Emblem

In 2008, the emblem underwent a slight modification. The falcon’s design was refined to give it a more modern and dynamic look, while maintaining the original elements and their significance. This update was part of ongoing efforts to ensure that national symbols resonate with contemporary and future generations of Emiratis.

Significance of the UAE Emblem

Symbol of Unity

The UAE emblem is a powerful symbol of national unity. The seven stars encircling the national flag on the falcon’s chest represent the unity of the seven emirates, each contributing to the federation’s strength and stability. The emblem underscores the idea that despite their individual histories and characteristics, the emirates are united in their pursuit of a common future.

Reflection of Heritage and Values

The elements of the emblem reflect the UAE’s rich heritage and core values. The falcon, an important figure in Arab culture, symbolizes qualities such as bravery, power, and perseverance. The use of Kufic script highlights the importance of Arabic language and Islamic culture in the UAE’s identity. Together, these elements convey a sense of pride in the nation’s past while looking forward to future achievements.

Representation on the Global Stage

The UAE emblem is a crucial element of the country’s international identity. It appears on official documents, government buildings, and diplomatic missions around the world, representing the UAE in global affairs. It is a reminder of the nation’s sovereignty, unity, and the values it upholds on the international stage.

Conclusion

The emblem of the United Arab Emirates is more than just a symbol; it is a testament to the nation’s unity, heritage, and aspirations. Through its carefully chosen elements and colors, it reflects the UAE’s rich cultural history and the enduring values of its people. As the UAE continues to grow and evolve, the emblem remains a powerful reminder of the nation’s identity and the shared vision that unites its citizens.

Hospitality is a cornerstone of Emirati culture, reflecting the values of generosity and kindness that are deeply embedded in daily life. In the UAE, welcoming guests and providing for them is not just a social duty but a cultural expression of respect and honor. This article explores the cultural importance of hospitality in Emirati society and how it manifests in various aspects of life.

The Roots of Emirati Hospitality

Historical Context

Emirati hospitality has its roots in the Bedouin tradition. In the harsh desert environment, providing shelter, food, and water to travelers was essential for survival. This practice of welcoming strangers became a crucial social norm, fostering strong community bonds and mutual support. Over time, these customs evolved into the deeply ingrained cultural practices we see today.

Islamic Influence

Islam plays a significant role in shaping the values of hospitality in Emirati society. The teachings of Islam emphasize the importance of treating guests with kindness and generosity. This religious foundation reinforces the cultural practice of hospitality, making it a sacred duty to honor and care for guests.

Manifestations of Hospitality in Daily Life

Welcoming Guests

In Emirati homes, the arrival of a guest is met with great enthusiasm. Guests are treated with the utmost respect and are offered the best food and refreshments available. It is common for hosts to go out of their way to ensure the comfort and satisfaction of their guests, often preparing elaborate meals and providing luxurious accommodations.

Traditional Practices

Serving Arabic Coffee and Dates: Offering Arabic coffee (Gahwa) and dates is a traditional gesture of hospitality in the UAE. This ritual, often the first act of welcoming a guest, symbolizes warmth and generosity. The coffee is typically served in small cups, with the host ensuring that the guest’s cup is never empty until they indicate they’ve had enough by shaking the cup.

Majlis Gatherings: The majlis, a traditional sitting area, is central to Emirati hospitality. It is a space where family, friends, and visitors gather to socialize, discuss matters, and share stories. The majlis represents an open and welcoming environment, embodying the spirit of community and hospitality.

Festive Celebrations

During cultural and religious celebrations, such as Eid and National Day, the spirit of hospitality is particularly evident. Emiratis open their homes to extended family, friends, and neighbors, hosting large gatherings and feasts. These occasions highlight the collective nature of hospitality, reinforcing social bonds and cultural identity.

The Cultural Significance of Hospitality

Building Social Bonds

Hospitality in Emirati culture goes beyond mere etiquette; it is a means of building and maintaining social bonds. By welcoming and providing for guests, Emiratis reinforce mutual respect and trust within their community. These practices help create a strong social fabric, where relationships are nurtured, and collective well-being is prioritized.

Preserving Cultural Identity

Hospitality is a key aspect of Emirati cultural identity. It reflects the values of generosity, kindness, and respect that are central to the nation’s heritage. By continuing to practice and celebrate hospitality, Emiratis preserve and honor their cultural traditions, ensuring that these values are passed down to future generations.

Promoting Positive Image

The renowned hospitality of Emiratis also plays a significant role in promoting a positive image of the UAE to the world. Visitors to the country often remark on the warm and welcoming nature of their hosts, creating lasting impressions and fostering goodwill. This cultural trait enhances the UAE’s reputation as a destination known for its friendliness and respect for guests.

Conclusion

Emirati hospitality is a profound expression of the values of generosity and respect that are deeply rooted in the culture. From historical practices and religious teachings to daily life and festive celebrations, the spirit of hospitality permeates every aspect of Emirati society. By upholding these traditions, the UAE not only preserves its rich heritage but also strengthens its social bonds and promotes a positive global image.

Building on the success of the inaugural grant scheme in 2023, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Zayed National Museum, the national museum of the UAE currently under construction on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island, have launched the second round of the Zayed National Museum Research Fund. The fund continues to uphold the legacy of UAE Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, while fostering research into the culture and history of the nation.

The Zayed National Museum Research Fund, with an annual allocation of AED1 million, is one of the most significant funding opportunities in the region. The funding scheme is designed to support new research on a range of aspects of UAE culture, heritage, history, and archaeology – including the enduring impact of Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed and the country’s intangible heritage such as oral traditions, stories, and songs.

With large and small grants available, the funding scheme aims to support both established and early career researchers and bolster a new generation of scholars specialising in the history of the UAE. Applications for the second round of funding are now open, inviting researchers from around the globe to contribute to the preservation, advancement of knowledge and understanding of the UAE’s heritage. Researchers can submit their applications before 20 July 2024, and grants will be announced in November.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel comprising representatives from Zayed National Museum and DCT Abu Dhabi, as well as external subject matter experts. The research projects will be assessed against criteria such as research methodology, experience, outcomes, and alignment with the museum’s mandate.

The success of the inaugural grant scheme is reflected in the diverse pool of recipients, with 10 researchers selected from 77 applicants, representing 19 countries. Their projects shed light on various facets of UAE culture and history, contributing to a rich tapestry of scholarly works. Projects chosen in the inaugural year covered a broad spectrum, including Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed’s societal and cultural influence, historical ties between India and the Arabian Peninsula, and the role of women in Arabian Peninsula trade, among others.

His Excellency Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “After the resounding success of last year’s funding round, we are delighted to launch the second year of the Zayed National Museum Research Fund. Zayed National Museum is committed to building on the extensive body of scholarship on the rich history of the UAE and supporting both established researchers and those beginning their academic careers. It is an exciting time for research in the UAE, with a new wave of archaeological discovery and academic thinking. We hope this funding opportunity will help researchers follow their curiosity and unlock new understandings about the land and lives of the UAE.”
