Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is celebrating Hag Al Leila, a cherished mid-Sha’ban tradition, with a series of cultural activities across its venues from 11 to 19 February. These festivities highlight the historical and social significance of the occasion while fostering national identity among younger generations. Through interactive events, Dubai Culture aims to preserve and share the UAE’s heritage on a global scale.

Cultural Experiences Across Museums and Libraries

Al Shindagha Museum, the UAE’s largest heritage museum, will host Hag Al Leila-themed activities in collaboration with Kinder from 14 to 16 February. Children dressed in traditional attire will embark on ‘Hag Al Leila Trails’ through Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood, collecting sweets, singing folk songs, and engaging in creative workshops. Inspired by Emirati traditions, the workshops will feature art installations reflecting the iconic Hag Al Leila bag and local delicacies.

Kinder will also introduce a digital element, allowing children to design their own Ramadan characters on iPads, which will be displayed on a large screen. To enhance the festive spirit, 400 kilogrammes of Kinder chocolate will be distributed. Visitors will also have access to the museum’s exhibitions, offering deeper insights into Dubai’s cultural heritage.

Etihad Museum will host an immersive programme on 15 and 16 February, bringing Emirati customs to life. ‘Dukkan Al-Mathaf’ will recreate a nostalgic Emirati grocery store, featuring classic sweets. The Basma Choir will perform traditional Hag Al Leila songs alongside Arabic and Khaleeji classics. The event will also include workshops, entertainment sessions, and film screenings, all centered around themes of heritage and belonging.

The Kutubna Cultural Center will present a storytelling session featuring Emirati folktales that highlight unity and cultural harmony. Guests can enjoy traditional games and view ‘Eternal Gateways,’ an art installation by Abdulla Al Neyadi inspired by old Emirati doors. The museum will also feature dedicated spaces for visitors to sample local cuisine, while Emirati creatives will have the opportunity to showcase and promote their work.

Extending the Celebrations Across Dubai

Dubai Public Library branches will host school visits, offering activities such as traditional games, henna stations, and a ‘Dukkan Al-Taybeen’ (Old School Grocery). Visitors can also explore ‘Raa’i Al Sambosa’ (Samosa Corner), ‘Al Khabbazat’ (Traditional Bakery Corner), and the ‘Kharareef Yadoh’ (Grandmother’s Tales) storytelling session. Additionally, an Emirati dialect workshop will provide deeper cultural engagement.

The celebrations will conclude on 19 February at the Dubai Club for People of Determination. This event will feature interactive workshops, including bracelet-making, tote bag painting, and a themed drawing competition, all led by expert facilitators.

Through these diverse activities, Dubai Culture continues to safeguard Emirati traditions, ensuring they remain an essential part of the city’s cultural identity for generations to come.

Inloco Gallery announces the opening of its new season under the theme “Lost Tradition” scrutinizing the role of traditions in the contemporary world. The featured artists reflect on the reevaluation of heritage, emphasizing its evolving significance and exploring the nostalgia for ways of life that fade with time. The season’s launch is marked by the unveiling of VERTICAL HORIZON / 361 DEGREES, a project that unfolds through 3 interconnected components: an art intervention, a live performance, and a solo exhibition by internationally renowned artist Karim Jabbari.

Project Structure and Timeline

January 5, 2025 – Art Intervention in Al Satwa
The project’s narrative commences with an art intervention in Dubai’s historic Al Satwa district, where contemporary Arab artists Khalil Abdulwahid and Karim Jabbari explore the delicate balance between tradition and modernity. Guided by a leading expert in Arabic and multilingual typography Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès, the artists engage in a dérive – an unplanned single-day urban exploration – to immerse in street life and local conversations, intentionally seeking out traces of lost ways of living, while documenting their practice. The intervention captures the neighborhood’s stories, textures, and fading memories, offering a poetic reflection on its transformation. The art intervention draws inspiration from a 2024 project Sikka by Emirati urbanist and scholar Dr. Khaled Alawadi, highlighting the cultural significance of traditional alleyways, as hubs of social interaction and community life.

January 29, 2025, 7:00 PM – Live Performance and Video Art Screening
The narrative deepens through a dynamic live performance combining light, calligraphy, video art, and music. Jabbari will create light calligraphy in real time, with his evolving artwork projected on a large screen. Simultaneously, Abdulwahid’s video art will showcase Al Satwa’s disappearing cultural fabric, blending documentary footage with artistic intervention. The performance will be accompanied by vocal and musical improvisation by Faisal Salah (FACESOUL), whose music will become a featured show theme.

January 29, 2025, 8:00 PM – Solo Exhibition by Karim Jabbari
Featuring works created during his residency in Dubai, the show reflects on the artist’s engagement with tradition, urban nostalgia, and the reinterpretation of cultural heritage. Collectors and friends of the gallery are invited to an exclusive preview event to explore Jabbari’s innovative approach to blending ancient calligraphic traditions with contemporary design.

Vans has reimagined its flagship West End store on Oxford Street with a striking centerpiece: a skateable travertine ramp, combining its skateboarding heritage with bold design. The store, first opened in 2019, now showcases a transformation led by Milan-based architect Andrea Caputo, celebrating skateboarding, music, and art.

The Travertine Skate Ramp

The 200-square-metre skate ramp, crafted from travertine stone, was developed in collaboration with Vans’ skateboarding ambassadors. Designed as a modular, multi-transition obstacle, it spans the store’s length and features a dramatic vertical wall at one end. When not in use for skateboarding, the ramp can be reconfigured into seating or merchandising stands, making it versatile for retail and events.

“Designed as a single large block of stone, entirely laid and polished on-site, the ramp will be the beating heart of the store,” Vans explained. The ramp will host skate lessons, demos, and events featuring the Vans skate team and local skate schools.

Flexible Design for Retail and Events

The store’s interior is adaptable, with perforated glass peg-board-style panels enhancing retail displays. The space is designed to seamlessly transition between its role as a retail outlet and a venue for live music shows, art exhibitions, and community events.

A Tribute to Skateboarding Culture

The store integrates other skateboarding-inspired elements, including:

  • Plywood walls and product displays, carved to mimic the grinding marks of skateboards.
  • A stripped-back industrial aesthetic with concrete flooring and exposed ducting for urban authenticity.

Collaborations and Exclusives

Vans West End showcases a wide selection of Vans products alongside collaborations with brands like The Great Frog and Gomi, which created exclusive checkered speakers and powerbanks.

Architectural Legacy

Andrea Caputo, known for his thoughtful design, previously created Vans’ Seoul store with modular plywood displays inspired by Carl Andre and Donald Judd. Vans has also celebrated skate culture globally, unveiling a temporary skate bowl last year in front of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris.

The revamped London store reinforces Vans’ commitment to blending skateboarding culture, innovative retail design, and community engagement.

The 11th edition of the Camel Trek, organized by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC), is approaching its grand finale at the Heritage Village in Global Village, Dubai. After 13 days and over 680 kilometers traversing the UAE’s breathtaking desert landscapes, the trek is set to conclude on December 21, 2024.

11th Camel Trek Celebrates UAE’s Heritage Journey

This year’s trek, which began on December 9 in the Rub’ al Khali desert, has been a remarkable celebration of tradition and culture, featuring 33 participants from 17 nationalities. Passing key locations such as Tel Marib, South Shah, the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary “Bab Bin Mudhahiya,” Al-Du’aisiya, and North Al-Qaw’a, the caravan is now progressing towards Khaznah, Ajban, and Saih Al-Silm, demonstrating a blend of resilience, teamwork, and cultural appreciation.

A Living Tribute to UAE’s Cultural Legacy

Abdullah Hamdan Bin Dalmouk, CEO of HHC, applauded the participants’ perseverance in navigating the challenges posed by harsh weather and rugged terrain. Highlighting the trek’s alignment with Emirati traditions, he remarked:
“This journey was a real test of teamwork. With the increase in participants, we extended travel hours, often arriving after nightfall. This year’s trek simulated historical journeys, with participants preparing their meals and adapting to conditions similar to those faced by our ancestors.”

Bin Dalmouk further emphasized the significance of the trek as a cultural initiative, stating:
“Through this journey, we aim to reconnect with our history, preserving our national identity and introducing future generations to the essence of desert life—a key part of our ancestors’ lives.”

Personal Experiences and Cultural Bonds

Participants shared inspiring stories of how the trek served as both a personal and cultural awakening. Emirati citizen Khaled Yahya Al-Balushi reflected on the experience:
“This experience allows me to honor my forefathers’ journeys and represent the UAE’s traditions in the best light. Through cooperation and commitment, we showcase the beauty of Emirati customs alongside participants from diverse backgrounds.”

Dutch horse trainer Harmke Westervelt echoed these sentiments, describing the trek as a transformative experience:
“This journey was challenging yet deeply rewarding. As a horse trainer, I found bonding with my camel a unique and transformative experience, highlighting the incredible traits of these remarkable creatures.”

The Role of HHC in Preserving Heritage

The Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center plays a crucial role in organizing cultural initiatives like the Camel Trek, aimed at safeguarding and promoting Emirati heritage. HHC fosters a deep sense of national identity among the youth and bridges cultural gaps by introducing the UAE’s rich traditions to the global community.

As this year’s Camel Trek nears completion, it stands as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to celebrating its heritage while uniting people from diverse backgrounds under the shared values of teamwork, resilience, and cultural appreciation.

Celebrating creativity and heritage in the UAE desert from 4 to 12 January 2025.

Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has officially announced the dates for the fourth edition of the Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert festival. Scheduled to take place from 4 to 12 January 2025 at the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, this year’s festival will operate under the theme “Where Stories Come to Life.”

The event underscores Dubai Culture’s commitment to advancing Dubai’s cultural vision by fostering an environment that inspires filmmakers, highlights diverse stories, and cements the emirate’s position as a global cultural hub.

A Platform for Creativity and Sustainability

The festival will feature a diverse programme aimed at promoting sustainability in the film industry. It will serve as a collaborative platform for film professionals, offering a space to share experiences and knowledge. Key highlights include an array of activities such as film screenings, live performances, workshops, panel discussions, public art exhibits, immersive experiences, and competitions.

“This initiative not only enriches the creative ecosystem but also bridges the gap between local heritage and modern storytelling,” said a Dubai Culture representative.

Iconic Design Inspired by the Al Ghaf Tree

This year’s festival layout draws inspiration from the UAE’s national tree, the Al Ghaf, a symbol of resilience and heritage. The design features a central trunk-like pathway leading to branches showcasing creative works. Vibrant murals, digital art, and projections will highlight emerging talents, offering a rich and immersive experience for attendees.

Spotlighting Filmmakers and Emirati Traditions

As part of the festival, the Al Marmoom Short-Film Competition will showcase works from Emirati, GCC, Arab, and international filmmakers. The competition includes categories for documentaries, animation, live-action films, and AI-generated films.

The festival will also dedicate space to celebrating Emirati heritage, with displays of traditional crafts, cultural performances, and artistic works inspired by the UAE’s cinematic history. Visitors can immerse themselves in these exhibits, reflecting the Authority’s commitment to preserving and sharing the emirate’s legacy.
