The upcoming Dubai Fashion Week (DFW) will feature the renowned Italian luxury brand Roberto Cavalli as its guest of honor, marking the brand’s debut appearance in the Middle East. The event, running from September 1-7 at Dubai Design District, will feature the exclusive Roberto Cavalli spring/summer 2025 collection as the grand finale.

A Legacy of Italian Luxury Brand Roberto Cavalli

Founded in the 1970s by the late designer Roberto Cavalli, the brand quickly gained international acclaim for its distinctive use of bold tropical patterns and animal prints, becoming a staple on global runways and red carpets. Roberto Cavalli’s designs are synonymous with Italian luxury and glamour, making the brand a favorite among celebrities and fashion enthusiasts worldwide.

Fausto Puglisi’s Vision

Now under the creative direction of Fausto Puglisi, Roberto Cavalli continues to evolve while maintaining its iconic aesthetic. Puglisi stated, “We are honored to be the guest brand at Dubai Fashion Week,” while expressing enthusiasm about the brand’s participation in DFW.” Dubai is one of our biggest Middle Eastern markets, and the city’s spirit aligns perfectly with Roberto Cavalli. Showcasing here allows us to connect more deeply with our loyal clientele and new admirers alike. Our SS25 collection, exclusively edited for this event, reflects the luxurious essence of both Dubai and Roberto Cavalli.”

Dubai Fashion Week: A Global Fashion Powerhouse

The global fashion industry recognizes Dubai Fashion Week for its influential position on the fashion calendar, strategically placing it ahead of New York Fashion Week. Roberto Cavalli’s participation in DFW not only underscores the brand’s commitment to expanding its presence in the Middle Eastern market but also highlights Dubai’s growing influence as a global fashion hub. The exclusive SS25 collection promises to be a spectacular showcase, blending the opulent aesthetics of both Roberto Cavalli and Dubai. This collaboration sets the stage for future partnerships and solidifies Dubai’s status as a pivotal player in the international fashion scene.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become a vibrant hub for fashion, blending traditional Middle Eastern aesthetics with contemporary global styles. From luxurious abayas to cutting-edge haute couture, the UAE’s fashion scene is both diverse and dynamic. Here, we explore the latest fashion trends in the UAE, showcasing the innovative designs from local talents and international brands that are making waves.

Embracing Modern Abayas

The abaya, a traditional garment in the UAE, has undergone a stylish transformation. Modern abayas now feature bold colors, intricate embroidery, and unique cuts, making them a fashion statement. Designers like Hessa Falasi and Fatema Fardan are leading this trend, creating pieces that are both elegant and contemporary. The modern abaya is a perfect example of how traditional attire is being reimagined for the fashion-forward woman.

Sustainable Fashion

Sustainability is gaining significant traction in the UAE fashion scene. Designers are increasingly focusing on eco-friendly materials and ethical production practices. Brands like All Things Mochi and The Giving Movement are pioneers in this movement, offering collections that are both stylish and sustainable. These fashion trends reflects a growing awareness and commitment to environmental responsibility among UAE consumers and designers.

Fusion of East and West

The UAE’s cosmopolitan nature is reflected in its fashion, which often blends Eastern and Western styles. This fusion is evident in the collections of designers like Zuhair Murad and Rami Al Ali, who seamlessly integrate Middle Eastern influences with Western haute couture. This fashion blend creates unique and sophisticated pieces that appeal to a global audience, highlighting the UAE’s role as a cultural crossroads.

Street Style Influence

Street style is becoming a significant influence in UAE fashion, particularly among the younger generation. Casual yet chic outfits that mix high-end fashion with everyday wear are increasingly popular. Local designers like House of Nomad are known for their streetwear collections that combine comfort with style. This trend reflects a more relaxed and versatile approach to fashion, perfect for the urban lifestyle of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Bold and Bright Colors

Vibrant colors and bold patterns are dominating the UAE fashion scene. Designers are embracing bright hues like electric blue, fiery red, and vivid yellow to create eye-catching pieces. This trend is particularly popular in evening wear and occasion dresses, where designers like Michael Cinco and Furne One showcase their penchant for drama and glamour. Bold colors reflect the exuberance and energy of the UAE’s fashion industry.

Athleisure and Luxury Sportswear

The athleisure trend continues to thrive in the UAE, blending functionality with high fashion. Luxury sportswear brands like Adidas by Stella McCartney and local labels such as Nathalie Trad are offering chic yet comfortable options that are perfect for the UAE’s active lifestyle. Athleisure has become a staple in wardrobes, suitable for both gym sessions and casual outings.

Modest Fashion

Modest fashion is a significant trend in the UAE, catering to those who prefer stylish yet conservative attire. Designers are creating collections that offer both modesty and elegance, with flowing silhouettes, long sleeves, and high necklines. Brands like Bouguessa and Shatha Essa are known for their sophisticated and modest designs that are both fashionable and culturally respectful.

Conclusion

The fashion landscape in the UAE is a vibrant tapestry of tradition and modernity, local creativity and international influence. From modern abayas to sustainable fashion, and from street style to luxury sportswear, the UAE continues to be at the forefront of fashion innovation. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, the UAE offers a plethora of styles to explore and embrace.

Dubai, UAE, 21 September 2023: Dubai Fashion Week (DFW), founded by Dubai Design District (d3), part of TECOM Group PJSC, and the Arab Fashion Council (AFC), will return from October 9 until October 15, 2023, at d3. The upcoming event will present Spring/Summer 24 collections and include a dynamic, citywide calendar of high-profile fashion shows, exclusive events, book signings, a trunk show in collaboration with Mall of the Emirates, capsule launches, brand activations, and industry talks.

The official Dubai Fashion Week, which was launched at an intimate event this Spring, has become the region’s definitive fashion fixture. It evolves from the successful legacy of Arab Fashion Week, with shows planned in line with the global fashion calendar. This autumn, Dubai Fashion Week will again provide an international platform for emerging and established designers to grow their brands, securing Dubai’s position among the global fashion capitals of Paris, New York, London, and Milan.

Not only will regional designers get to meet and do business with international buyers and distributors, but the seven-day event will also serve as a gateway for international talent and brands to continue expanding their global footprint through the regional market. The upcoming edition will also have a strong sustainability focus, aligning with the UAE’s Year of Sustainability and the upcoming COP28 in Dubai.

Khadija Al Bastaki, Senior Vice President of Dubai Design District (d3) – TECOM Group, said: “The global fashion compass is heading east to Dubai. The city has always been a haven for creative talent on this side of the globe. It is now drawing a remarkably diverse and innovative assortment of talent, shaping the fashion industry’s future. The latest edition of Dubai Fashion Week will be a truly momentous occasion in the global fashion calendar and prove that extending platforms for creatives can bring unexpected and extraordinary talent to the fore. Dubai Fashion Week reflects d3’s commitment to empowering designers, fueling the creative economy, and driving greater creative investment in line with the Dubai Creative Economy Strategy and Dubai Economic Agenda D33.”

Jacob Abrian, CEO of the Arab Fashion Council, said: “Dubai Fashion Week exemplifies the formidable power of fashion, evolving into a global force that unites talents across borders. The Arab Fashion Council’s steadfast mission has always been to catapult the region’s fashion industry onto the global stage, laying the foundation for a thriving creative economy. This DFW edition represents a pivotal moment in reshaping the global fashion landscape and fortifying the international fashion community. Dubai Fashion Week, with its roster of impressive global designers and strong multinational support, stands as a testament to the event’s sustainable growth. We take pride in our achievements, but our future holds a treasure trove of surprises and ambitious plans.”

The Designer Roster

Dubai Fashion Week will witness more than 25 designers representing over 12 countries, including a yet-to-be-revealed world-renowned New York-based designer, reflecting Dubai’s flourishing status as a global fashion capital.

The schedule will see Dubai Fashion Week Members showcase original collections, including homegrown designers Mrs. KeepaDima Ayad, and Lama Jouni, as well as Victor Weinsanto.

Further names on the Dubai runway include d3-based designers Michael CincoPipatchara, and The Giving Movement, who will return to the global fashion event, alongside new names Viva Vox, Anaya, Yaspis, and Rizman Ruzaini. Dubai Fashion Week will bring together talents from the GCC and Levant, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North and South America. The works of the late Russian couturier Valentin Yudashkin will be presented in the upcoming edition, marking the brand’s first appearance in Dubai.

Also featuring on the Dubai Fashion Week events calendar will be the IGDS World Department Store Summit, the world’s largest event for department store leaders and their business partners. The event, which will be the first event organized by IGDS in the Middle East, will be staged on October 11–12, 2023, in Dubai.

Furthering its agenda to facilitate new opportunities for international talent, Dubai Fashion Week will also host The Designers Showroom, a multifunctional platform committed to cultivating a creative community and promoting talent. This new initiative will be a staple of Fashion Week, providing regional and international buyers, shoppers, and media with a common space to engage with and explore the craftsmanship of designers. See the complete list of designers here.

This season, Dubai Fashion Week will further grow its support for fresh talent by dedicating multiple slots on its calendar to young designers. Dubai Fashion Week will feature the Graduate Fashion Foundation, which will springboard new fashion talent during Graduate Fashion Week with runway shows highlighting innovative presentations by graduate students worldwide from over 30 universities.

The d3-based FAD Institute will also showcase its student’s work during a dedicated show. Prestigious Italian fashion school Polimoda is not only showcasing emerging talent with a runway show by one of their star students but is also joining hands with the AFC to launch a competition during an intimate dinner at DFW. This competition will be officially announced during the event, offering an incredible opportunity for the winner to earn a Polimoda scholarship.

Dubai Fashion Week is possible due to the generosity, commitment, and contributions of its strategic partners: Air France as the official aviation partner; Meta as the official media partner; Microsoft as the official tech partner; Nothing as the official mobile partner; Dyson as the official hair tech partner; Kiko Milano as the official makeup partner; Schwarzkopf Professional as the official haircare partner; Waldorf Astoria as the official hotel partner; and Lavazza as the official coffee partner.

The term “sustainable” has felt overused throughout the years. The term has become so overused in fashion, architecture, manufacturing, and design as a philosophy, a way of life, and a methodology that it has turned the necessity for sustainability into an impenetrable cliché.

But it’s encouraging to see that the idea of sustainability feels real at the seventh Dubai Design Week. Through the projection of regional and international designers into actual settings, the festival has discovered a method to highlight how sustainability can be a part of our lives in real, practical, and aesthetically appealing ways.

Design with Impact is the theme for this year’s Dubai Design Week, one of the biggest trade shows of its kind in the Middle East. The theme gets to the point rather than elaborating on what sustainability means locally or globally and how to practically apply it to daily life.

One of the first open events held in Dubai after the UAE lifted nearly all COVID-19 restrictions took place in conjunction with Cop27. The Dubai Design District was bustling with visitors interacting with installations and examining how sustainable design can be implemented both locally and globally through a variety of mediums.

The expansive pavilion sculpture by US architecture company OBMI in the central courtyard is a must-see installation. The mangrove forests, a key component of the UAE’s natural ecosystem and heritage, have been transformed by OBMI into a vast floating canopy that is exquisitely handmade from natural materials and bears the name Once Upon a Forest.

The protective canopy is built of net mesh and bamboo bracing and provides shade and a place for people to gather while also celebrating the mangrove ecology of the UAE. The pavilion also features an integrated audio-visual immersive experience that takes visitors on a journey while educating them about the value of the ecosystem of mangrove forests.

Al Gargoor, created by Bahraini architect Sara Alrayyes, is another work that recycles materials while incorporating elements of antiquity. The project investigates how ancient fishing nets made of gargoor, might be upcycled into furniture and lanterns. It’s incredible how a substance steeped in the region’s history of pearling and fishing can be made to appear stylish and timeless.

The furniture pieces were low to the ground, facing each other, and their expansive, inviting silhouettes were modeled after traditional majlis seats. With its beach-white color and hollow inside, the material has been created to appear airy but is surprisingly strong and comfy.

Dubai Design District is currently hosting Dubai Design Week through Sunday. The event is free and open to the public.

When you see a work of art, time stops. Every warp and woof has a tale to tell that goes beyond proving its aesthetic legitimacy to demonstrating the skill and cultural vocabulary of its maker.

When you combine that with technical advancements, you have a wonderful blend of tradition and contemporary that is at the heart of the UAE’s creative scene.

Dr. Hayat Shamsuddin, Senior Vice President of Expo Pavilions and Exhibitions at Expo 2020 Dubai, states that “to truly come to know a country, one must first comprehend its history and culture.”She’s the brains of MENASA – Emirati Design Platform, a showcase that houses the work of over 40 local and international designers that individually reinvent Emirati crafts through a contemporary lens. “The theme and spirit of Expo 2020 Dubai, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future,’ inspired the collective approach of MENASA, which means platform’ in Arabic,” added Dr. Hayat. MENASA is the largest-ever gathering of local and international designers, celebrating Emirati artisanal work and using craft as a communication tool that’s merged with new technologies and materials to convey stories of the UAE, and is curated by Samer Yamani, Director of Expo 2020 Dubai’s Design and Crafts Program.

“The platform’s curatorial approach was founded on three strands,” explains Dr. Hayat, “which addressed the importance of legacy crafts in Emirati culture, explored local materials within their geographical environments, and focused on the impact of design on people’s lives.” The flowing sculptural form is 13 meters long and combines cutting-edge 3D printing technology with traditional Emirati crafts and materials,” says Dr. Hayat. “Carmelo employed 3D printing technology to produce the eye-catching, dynamic form of intertwining lines that recalls the power of both natural forces and technological progress, drawing inspiration from nature.”

The futuristic 3D-printed shape was then dressed by Rami, who is known for his spectacular couture creations. He chose and worked with Sadu wool, intricate, golden designs of Talli embroidery, local natural palm fibers, and threads used in traditional fishing nets in conjunction with Al Ghadeer UAE Crafts, exploring how the physical and aesthetic aspects of the materials interact with one another.

8,000 Waves: The Pearl Diving Story, a collaboration between Todomuta and Asateer, an Emirati design business created by Mohammed Al Suwaidi, the grandson of a pearl diver, is one of the platform’s centerpieces.

The series includes a one-of-a-kind wall sculpture as well as limited-edition candle holders and incense burners made of metal and inlaid with mother of pearl cut from oyster shells cultivated locally in Ras Al Khaimah. According to Dr. Hayat, “8,000 Waves is a multi-layered depiction of the UAE, its history, and its spirit today.” Through the story of Asateer, it portrays a story of adversity and wealth, reverence for the past and memory of our grandfathers, but it also speaks to the UAE’s young and entrepreneurial spirit.”
