World Food Day is an international day observed every year on October 16 to commemorate the anniversary of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s creation in 1945. Many additional organizations concerned with hunger and food security, including the World Food Program, the World Health Organization, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, observe the day. WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for its efforts to battle hunger, contribute to peace in conflict zones, and play a major role in preventing the use of hunger as a weapon.

Food has been a tool for bringing peace just like art that speaks beyond all boundaries and certain artists use their art to illustrate food in the most hyper-realistic ways possible that leave us stunned. Below are two such artists whose works we’d like to honor this World Food Day.

Kailene Falls

Kailene, who was born and raised in Minnesota, earned degrees in Japanese and graphic design from the University of Minnesota in 2014. Shortly after graduation, she began working as a designer and illustrator in Tokyo, Japan.

She constantly has access to great and beautiful food because she lives in Japan, and one day the idea to paint food came to her. Food and culture are closely related, so by depicting the meals she had when visiting Japan, she was able to learn about the local way of life, share it through her work, and boost her chances of traveling and trying new foods.

She enjoys painting in a very realistic and precise way, but her aim is for her work to look like art rather than a photograph. She employs a color scheme reminiscent of retro/vintage paintings with the intention of evoking nostalgia in viewers, even if they have never sampled the meal.

“World Food Day is a celebration of something we all love- Food! Food is something that brings people together. It crosses language and culture and is a wonderful way for different people from different walks of life to communicate. As a food illustrator, I am very lucky to be able to combine my passion for art and food together, and this day is very important to me!” says Kailene.

Shilpa Rajan

Shilpa Rajan is a Graphic designer-cum-artist from Kerala, she is currently based in Dubai. The artist loves to paint and mentions her painting as a source of immense joy and contentment. The artist says she enjoys every art medium. However, she predominantly works using acrylic paints. Photorealism is as mentioned by Shilpa, her area of interest.

As her art explores photorealism, Shilpa’s inspiration comes from anything that catches her attention out of the ordinary. Shilpa describes that everything around her has an artistic view to it, it’s all about noticing that and recreating it on the canvas.

Achievements mean different things to different people. According to Shilpa, her biggest achievement is being able to spread happiness and positivity through her art. I receive a lot of messages on Instagram from my followers who say that they get inspired to paint by seeing my artwork. Some of them recreate my work and share it with me. Such small instances make me happy as I’m able to make a positive difference in someone’s life.

Most passports tend to be relatively uniform in design. They’re often burgundy, black, or blue in color and they might encompass a small version of the symbol of a nation. But that won’t be the case for Belgians from February 7 — the country will now issue passports defined by images of its comic strip heroes, from Tintin to the Smurfs.

Belgian passport holders will now be able to flick through the pages of their new document and spot some of the nation’s most beloved fictional characters, including Lucky Luke and Blake and Mortimer alongside Hergé’s famous boy reporter and the blue Smurfs that have long been popular amongst children across the world.

In a press release, Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès said the new passport is “even more secure thanks to new security and personalization techniques” and added that it will be “recognizable thanks to its original design, which honors one of the jewels of our culture: the heroines and heroes of comic strips.”

Wilmès also described the Belgian passport as “one of the best in the world” and called it a “source of pride” for the nation. She also noted that it is an “object of desire for counterfeiters,” which is why the Foreign Ministry is constantly working to improve its security.

“The introduction of this new passport is also an opportunity for us to highlight the 9th art, the comic strip, which is a central element of our culture and our influence abroad,” Wilmès said.

The Foreign Minister thanked the “publishers, authors and rights holders who have agreed to participate in the project.”

She also emphasized the reinforcement in the quality and security of the passport but acknowledged that the cost would not increase, which she called a “strong gesture that will be cost-beneficial for our citizens.”

According to Tintin’s official website, on the occasion of the launch of the new document, a temporary exhibition on the history of the Belgian passport will be accessible at the Musée de la bande dessinée (Comic Art Museum) until March 6.

Most of the images on the new passport are taken from the classic comic strips, such as Tintin’s “Explorers on the Moon” — first published in 1954 — and, according to the Tintin website, the comic strip characters chosen to grace the new passport pages are linked to the theme of travel.

Tintin’s adventures took him across the globe, from the US to Sydney and even outer space. Now, Belgian travelers will be accompanied by Hergé’s design along with the other comic strip figures that the country is renowned for producing.

Six renowned Paris museums will hold simultaneous exhibitions to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Yves Saint Laurent’s first collection, in an unprecedented tribute from the art world to the late French fashion designer. The activities, which will take place in museums including the Louver and the Musée d’Orsay, will illustrate how the famed couturier was influenced by some of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, including Picasso, Matisse, and Mondrian.

The participation of some of France’s largest and most recognized institutions, according to Mouna Mekouar, who arranged the multi-center event that will feature the designer’s work presented in the context of each establishment’s permanent collections, is unprecedented.

“I believed it would be hard to persuade so many museums to agree to our plan, yet they were all immediately intrigued and excited.” It’s the first time they’ve all collaborated on a single project,” Mekouar explained.

“Art inspired Saint Laurent, and this display demonstrates the connections and discussion between his work and the museum exhibits. We didn’t want to store the clothing in a room; instead, we wanted them to be shown with the permanent collections. On January 29, 1962, Yves Saint Laurent held his debut haute couture show.

“I believe a couturier’s work is extremely similar to that of an artist. In reality, I’ve always been inspired by the work of contemporary painters like Picasso, Matisse, and Mondrian,” Saint Laurent subsequently revealed.

“I owe my July 1966 collection to American painters like Wesselman and Roy Lichtenstein, who have always affected me.” “Landscapes, moonlight, and sunlight lighted all of my costumes,” he continued.
